It wouldn't surprise should there be a bit of a push from inside for Rankine.

Not that there should be, but you'd imagine that the executive would like a player with a profile and one that may put bums on seats.
That's nothing against the other players but Rankine is the wildcard in this deck.

Pull the trigger at #1? Unlikely, but some may not be unhappy should SOS and co, go that way.

If we do rate Rankine then that brings a trade picks well into contention. Can't see us using Pick 1 for him.

Given our list I would trade Pick 1 & next years FIRST for 3, 6 & 24. Rankine, Smith & maybe McHenry would top us right off

We don't have a 2019 2nd, but i agree with the trading down strategy

I think it would take our future first to get that done. (Which I would do)
Even if we wanted to I can't see GC only taking three good picks into this draft when they currently have 5.
If we rate Rankine on par with Walsh we would be mad not to trade even if it's only for a pick in the 20's

Can anyone confirm what deal is with draft this year?

Is it first round on Thursday night then
2nd round to end of rookie draft from 12pm Friday?

Yep, 1st round only night 1.
Rest done the next day (morning I believe) with rookie picks completed that afternoon.
Edit: Foxtel coverage
18:00 - 20:30 Thurs
11:00 - 14:30 Fri

I'd be asking for Brisbane's 2019 first back as well.

1 and future first (~3-6)
for
3, 6 and future first (~8-12)

Starting to think we may see some convoluted multi-club trade at the top end.

Gold Coast send Picks 6 and 29 to St Kilda for Pick 4.
Gold Coast send Pick 4 to Adelaide for Picks 8 and 16.
Gold Coast trade Picks 3 and 8 to Carlton for Pick 1.
)

Yeh na. As posted suns wont give up 3 an 6 for pick 1 unless we throw in next years 1st.

Swans father son will get bid on as early as 3 or 4.So really pick 6 turns into 7..

I can't see sos over looking luko but that's againt what everybody else thinks lol

Academy shuffling is somewhat irrelevant to the discussion.

Pick 6 becomes 7, but nobody is considering Blakey as an option. Pick 7 is still nominally the 6th best non-Blakey player.

Also, there's no way we "throw in" next year's first (likely to be Pick 4-5). We trade down from 1 to 3, and from 4 to 6....why the **** would we even entertain it.

Besides, the trade scenario I posted has GC getting Pick 16 back as well, which gets them a handy player in this year's draft. 3 and 6 for 1 and 16 is surprisingly close to par on the draft index, which would indicate it's somewhat balanced, especially if both clubs are getting some benefit from it (ie. Walsh+ for GC and Rankine+ for Carlton).

Settle down. It's what has been reported by the media (hs) just today. the suns want the blues two 1st..

Suns have already told the 3 sa boys they will take them so forget the crap pick 16.

The top 10 this year, is significantly better than what the top 10 next year, is projecting.

Carlton - Lose pick 1 + 2019 1st + 2019 3rd. Gain Pick 2 + Pick 6 + Pick 24 + Lions 2019 1st

Posturing. Of course GC will say they want our future first back, because you start negotiating from an unreasonable position and work your way back. Just cause they say it doesn't make it true. In the same way, if we say we want 2x top 10 picks, including one very high one, we'd probably be satisfied with a top 3-4 pick and another in the early teens.

Smoke and mirrors, friend.

The top 10 this year, is significantly better than what the top 10 next year, is projecting.

Carlton - Lose pick 1 + 2019 1st + 2019 3rd. Gain Pick 2 + Pick 6 + Pick 24 + Lions 2019 1st

See, that's fine - give us a future first and second back and it's a whole different ballgame.

1 and future 4 for 3 and 6. Ridiculous.
1 and future 4 and 40 for 3, 6, 24 and future 10. Better.

If I'm GC I'm just backing myself in and taking the picks to the draft.
Take Lukosius and Rankine then ever who is left at 6 is near perfect for them.
If it's Rozee than they get the 3 SA boys, if it's Smith they get a dedicated ready to go mid with a great attitude and if they get Max King they walk away with potentially the three most talented players in the draft and can look for mids with their two picks in the 20's plus with their two first rounders next year.
They really just need a Fagan type turnaround and if they don't they are skewed anyway.

I agree

If I was GC, I would take all 3 top 6 picks to the draft and either draft Lukosius, Rankine, Rozee/Hately or the King boys, Smith/Caldwell

I think that's the point, Gappy.

We've had a bazillion high picks and it's got us nowhere.

No longer will we pin our hopes solely on a bunch of highly touted pimply kids to pull the club out of its spiral.

To be successful you need to be able to
- identify talent all the way through the draft (and the rookie draft)
- trade in missing pieces for decent value
- develop the talent to reach its potential
- cleverly manage the salary cap and list balance
- maximise fitness and health, minimising injuries
- coaching, etc etc

Still some unproven elements, but I see signs that we are working on a wholistic approach to building a successful list - so much more than ever before.

When you pick up players drafted by other teams as high end picks but you don't pay the same price at the trade table it does not count.

Here's what I really believe will happen (or be close)

Pick One: Sam Walsh
Pick 69: Draftee
Pick 71: Mason Blakey (21 Years Old next year)
DFA: Hugh Goddard (23 Years Old)

Rookie One: Draftee
Rookie Two: Ben Silvagni
Rookie Three: Will Hickmott or Sam Fisher (21 Years Old) or Jed Lamb (27 Years Old)

Gold Coast send Pick 4 to Adelaide for Picks 8 and 16.
Gold Coast trade Picks 3 and 8 to Carlton for Pick 1.

Gold Coast turn 3 and 6 into 1 and 16.
St Kilda shuffle back a few (unimportant) spots to get back into the second round.
Adelaide pay a slight premium but position themselves to get one of the big 2 SA boys (ahead of Port).
Carlton get their two top 10 picks, including one inside the top 3.

Does that get everyone what they want?

1 - GC (Walsh)
2 - GC (B. King)
3 - Car (Rankine)
4 - Ade (Lukosius)
5 - PA (Smith)
6 - StK (M. King)
7 - WB (Caldwell/Rozee)
8 - Car (Caldwell/Rozee)
|
13 - Ade (Hately/RCD)
|
16 - GC (Jones/Butters/Stocker)
|
29 - StK (Bytel/Koschitzke?)

Doubt it happens, but I would take it.

I would think GC take Luko with pick 2.
Adelaide take Rankine at 4 (since Luko off the books)
I suggest we take B. Smith at 3 instead of Rankine.
At 8 we take Caldwell or Rozee or one of the King twins (if available).

You are Gold Coast. That is what is happening. Hope they nail it and get 3 really good kids that become back bone of their club for next decade.
