People say that this draft is better than that one and so on....
Who cares? It's not as though you're going to get the first ten players. You get one pick....that's it. :)

There are some good players at the top end of this draft and last years draft was deemed to be relatively poor, yet I wouldn't be the least bit surprised should Dow, Cerra and Brayshaw all become better players than Smith.

Seems to me that 3 players drove the excitement for this draft from a long way out; Max King, Lulosius & Rankine.
People were saying you don't sell next years picks at any cost. That hasn't exactly shown up to be the case looking at this draft as a whole..

It's a long way out but I'd really like to see next years first used for a key player and not another 18 year old. We'll see.

Let's hope we perform well enough for our first pick to be 'sell-able'. It's funny how much more valuable pick 4-6 is than pick 1-2 if you take this into account.

Daisy, Pickett, Garlett, Jones, Lobbe, LOB.... I think we will have plenty of potential whipping boys.

How about we make 2019 the year of the NO Whipping Boy? We have a great list and 2019 will have lots of enjoyment. Once you've made your point on a player move on.

PS How the hell is LOB mentioned?????

I think he was trying to emphasise Lobbe, so started to capitalise his name (LOB....) and got sidetracked halfway through.

Only explanation I’ve got Soapy.

I think Pickett will be one who steps up next year and Lochie O’Brien I rate. He will turn out the Isaac Smith type. Run all day, silky skills.

Nothing drifted.

Due diligence. Luko and Rozee were here for horse races and also visited other clubs.

SOS is wanting a Godfather offer, bringing in Tom Browne was all an elaborate ruse to whip up other clubs into doing stupid deals.

If the article was authored by Tom Browne I wouldn't have bothered posting but Niall and Gleeson are much more credible journalists. They wouldn't put that tidbit in if they didn't get some info from someone credible (noting it could be a plant from a credible source to stir up Port and try to get them to pay overs for pick 1).

Perhaps we can add, Lang , Polson, Cuningham, Phillips, Levi and kerr too.
Obviously we have a way to go before we have an optimal playing list.
Every club has a few. They are depth players that if they can play their role while others are out injured, we keep winning due to the rest of the team being solid. Think Ryan Shoenmakers at Hawks. Came in from time to time and was very average but still a premiership player as he just did enough to fill a hole and came in at the right time.
I think our depth is getting better now, two years ago Levi was our only key forward. Now he will only come in when a key is injured and maybe behind Kerr.
Important we just be positive about each player on our list rather than bagging the depth players for their deficiencies and accept even the best premiership lists had about 6-8 quality depth players after best 22 - but sometimes they have to dip into those depth players below the 6-8 that just aren’t good enough to play quality at top level but are good at VFL and help the younger players develop.

Here's what I really believe will happen (or be close)

Pick One: Sam Walsh
Pick 69: Draftee
Pick 71: Mason Blakey (21 Years Old next year)
DFA: Hugh Goddard (23 Years Old)

Rookie One: Draftee
Rookie Two: Ben Silvagni
Rookie Three: Will Hickmott or Sam Fisher (21 Years Old) or Jed Lamb (27 Years Old)

Really hope we pick up Will Hickmott :)
Kid has done everything he can to prove he is worthy of a F/S selection and be in the navy blue.

To be successful you need to be able to
- identify talent all the way through the draft (and the rookie draft)
- trade in missing pieces for decent value
- develop the talent to reach its potential
- cleverly manage the salary cap and list balance
- maximise fitness and health, minimising injuries
- coaching, etc etc

Still some unproven elements, but I see signs that we are working on a wholistic approach to building a successful list - so much more than ever before.

Sounds easy..................

I'd do Walsh for Rankine and Smith but would prefer if we didn't screw over Gold Coast in the process.

The word people keep throwing around to describe Sam Walsh is consistent.

No one is really saying he's the best, they're just saying that he's bankable and you know what you'll get.

Cant imagine Port passing on Rozee. The marketing bucks alone they'd be passing up, plus with him going the very next pick means theyd cop heat from the local media. Wont happen.

Our draft connections with the top echelon of players:

Ben & Max King: We all know SOS loves his KPP. Drafted heaps at the Giants and has a close family connection with their family.
Sam Walsh: Touted as the most consistent and bankable draft prospect since Josh Kelly, ozzing leadership qualities. According to media sources, exactly what our club needs.
Bailey Smith: SOS would have seen a lot of him at Xavier. Potentially mates with BSOS. Is described as a good character and a dedicated prospect. Exactly the qualities SOS looks for. Keep in mind he drafted Cuningham (friend of JSOS I believe) in 2015.
Jye Caldwell: Comes from the Bendigo Pioneers. Since Cain Liddle was appointed, the club has gone back to traditions in using the Pioneers region as our hunting grounds. Some of our greatest have come from these areas. With our crop in 2017 including the likes of Dow, O'brien and Schumacher, we may well continue the trend.
Izak Rankine: Lets be honest, 2018 wasn't the greatest season but the thing that sets us apart from a team like St. Kilda is star power and wow factor. We have Curnow and Cripps. Maybe Rankine will be another drawcard to get our crowd attendances up. He's the one player everyone will want to see live. In addition, if the rumours of Eddie Betts returning to Carlton post football are true, the connection with Rankine strengthens. Keep in mind we do not have a proven small forward on our list.
Jack Lukosius & Connor Rozee: Could be taken as a pair if we trade down. Lukosius is the versatile tall forward SOS loves, and we do not have a player on our list with Rozee's physical attributes who can play both half forward and midfield. Strengthens our forward line and midfield in one hit.

Trade or retain pick 1?

Hmmmm, which way will we go?

If you think you know, you're only guessing.

Quaynor at 12? God I hope someone bids on him here and Pies are stupid enough to match, brings our pick in

That is like the Ebert v Dangerfield issue?

Not really, Ebert wasnt as highly rated as Rozee is, he could go as high as pick 3. Adding the fervour the SA media have whipped up surrounding their young talent this draft, cant imagine Port passing on him. Twomey has at least acknowledged Crows would draft Hately a little higher than expected its a bit surprising he has Rozee sliding.

If Smith Hately Caldwell are available at 8, 9 & 10 I hope we do trade some picks.:)

Names like McHenry McFadyen Stack E.Smith McLennan O'Halloron Bytel etc still available after the first round. This is a good draft

Because apparently teenagers should be dual Brownlow Medallists with a few Coleman's and Norm Smith's :p

Keep up with the times Soapy :p
