was surprised by the trade, but back the club. Fck what the media say. We identified Stocker as a top 10 talent. He excels in extracting the ball and we will improve with the ins we made before this.

Im not a fan of the crows list, and in a two team town there will be a lot of pressure over there to have gotten this deal right. This will be in SA papers all year if they lose a few games. If the rumors of player unrest and the coach having a difficult personality....this screams of the team imploding.

This is why I wasn’t keen for Shiel. We would have paid a heap for him and probably cost us Setterfield & Stocker and maybe more. Given our position I didn’t like it. Now we have 2 young guns for the next decade instead of one for 5-6 years. We also still have money to retain all our young talent and maybe add more.

Couldn’t be happier [emoji847]

Read somewhere that AW’s cousin is available this year. Matt walker.

Don't tell her that ....she will start to salivate

Also really pleased Gold Coast grabbed Luko and Rankine and did not shy away. Crows not getting any of the elite SA talent was pretty funny in end. I am sure they tried really hard to throw things at Gold Coast and Saints to get a pick really early but in end nobody was stupid enough to give those value picks up. Good to see.

There is an elite SA talent next year they may just get with the Carlton pick anyway, delayed gratification.

It's obviously hard to make a definitive call on this so early, however what I will say is the following ...

- this is a very, very strong, and deep draft, and so pick 19 is probably around pick 10 in a normal year.
- our plan was to go to the draft to stock up on kids, and so it makes sense to bring kids in as early as possible, so getting another kid like Stocker now is logical
Thats the key point. Not only is it a case of being next years pick tenish. Its also a case of this years pick 19 being pick tenish or better in this years draft. With such a wealth of talent available there was always going to be really terrific players slipping down.

And its good weve stocked up on Stockers.............

And further to all thats been said the guy is just a fantastic speaker. Not a cliche in sight and incredibly mature in his manner. We talk about leadership. Walsh might have to fight Liam for captaincy one day.

Big gamble by GC with Ben King. Firstly they took the inferior twin and secondly why not take both to mitigate go home factor. I can see the SA boys back at the Crows/ Port in 2 years and Ben King using the desperate to play with my brother line in 2 years as well. Truly dumb trading.
They only needed picks 2&3 and should’ve cashed in with pick 6. The AFL suns just signed the death knell for this club.

I agree with this, but at the same time what were they to do? Izak and Luco had to go at 2 and 3.

The sad thing is you could see the players were not happy. Especially Izak. It would be like getting socks for Christmas.

I think for me it was highlighted by for example Judd/Jono Brown presenting jumpers vs Jarrod Harbrow??? Isn't exactly inspiring.

Its possible it could all go pear shaped for the Crows next year, they’d want to get off to a good start because there will be zero leeway given to Pyke and Burton if they don’t. This trade will compound that pressure.

Good on them for taking them I say. If they rated them as the best players then go for it.

They are doing their best to build a culture up there now.

If those sookie la las want to go home in two years, GC just say give us established stars or no trade.

make a stand. Tell them "you are more than welcome to go back in the draft but we will be selectimg you again with our low picks. Better learn to like it up here boys."

Cripps
Dow
Fisher
Setterfield
Walsh
Stocker
Petrevski-Seton
O’Brien

Our forward line and back line look just as exciting.
SOS has done it. He has turned our list around full circle. How can you look at that list and not get excited. For the first time I truly believe it’s going to be worth all the hard times.
Can’t wait for our list to mature. Bring it on.
Excuse the intrusion. That list is the best midfield spread of talent your mob has had on paper since the 90s. Cripps, Dow and Walsh won’t need much in the way of development. However, the way I see it, is that the key now is your development coaches in bringing the best out of the others. As much as I love seeing us beat Carlton, the game is all the better for having Essendon, Carlton, Collingwood and Richmond up against each other in finals. Enjoy the improvement, just let us sneak number 17 in before you challenge.

I honestly just don't see a solution for the GCS problem. They are currently a development team for other clubs.....

Its really exactly what was bound to happen at some point. When you invent a football team, with no histoy or foundation and deep roots of course young blokes dont want to go to it. A big part of the league is based on traditions and rivalries and past successes and memories. No club can make that from thin air. Its taken 30 years for West coast and Adelaide to get there as almost heavyweights and real clubs.

un_eggs Agree and that is what has held us back for a long time (player development) although this batch of young mids is arguably the best we have had in 20 years like you mentioned. Now it's a matter of them coming together and developing. You'll obviously be thereabouts before us with the squad you have assembled but then I expect us to start challenging a couple of years later

Using draft pick points in any argument is useless

Why is that? Higher picks play more games on average - a #1 pick plays twice the number of games (233) as a pick in the teens (116). Draft position is one third of the holy grail, diligent recruiting and proper development being the other two thirds.

you could have ten 10th round picks and they would probably 'equate' to a first round pick, but do they really?

Nope, 10 x 10th round picks, if they existed, = 0 points, first round pick = 3000 to 985 points, so not sure what you're getting at there.

And people get hung-up on next year - we are picking Stocker not for 2019 but for the next 10-12 years.

Don't we pick pretty much every player in the hope they play 10-12 years?

Add to that, how many no.1 draft picks have we had and how many have played in a premiership? overated no.1 draft picks - its not the number you get drafted but how the club develops you and drafts players as a collective

Agreed, but higher picks help, unless you're like Hawthorn and can get a weighted advantage in players via free agency, or Sydney and get the same via the academy.

Was mentioned the other day by Cal Twomey that Carlton may look at taking him, although he is tied to GWS so if we did they could match the bid...........he has been injured during the year but his highlights show that he is quick off the mark and he is a great overhead mark for a player of his size. He is 188cm and 84kg and just looks hard at it, and plays up forward and in the mid so if SOS wants him let`s hope that GWS do not match our bid.I think his toughness in the contest is something that would add to our forward line/midfield...........

SOS has built a beautifully balanced midfield list that runs deep with talent. In fact, I can't remember a time when a Carlton side has had such a depth of midfielders on it's list.

Stocker is likely the player they needed to get when Shiel slipped through their fingers.

For all the talk of talent, we should also not loose sight of the character they have brought into the side over three years. Competitiveness and leadership is now in abundance and this can only bode well for Carlton's future drive towards Premiership success.
