Going through some phantom drafts and looking back at our pick swap with the swans we have traded out our future 3rd round pick for what could be as little as a 3 to 5 pick upgrade once academy picks are taken into account, a really strange trade considering the cats got 27 for the demons future 3rd, I still can't understand the need to go so early on that trade when better options could open up on draft night, seems a huge miscalculation by our list management team.

You/we just don't know all the relevant reasons.

For instance, we now have the pick before Fremantle. Us and Freo are said to be keen on Poulter. That upgrade puts us in a better place to get him than before.

This is just a random example. Our blokes know what they're doing with the mechanics of the draft.

24 hours out from the draft, I’m fairly sure recruiters aren’t looking to BF to finalise their list choices. We have some crackers on here but, not quite that good.

I'm fairly sure if they were privy to where teams planned to take a certain player they would use it to their advantage if they were interested in the same player.

Only a 3-5 spot upgrade from 48 to 31? Don't think there are 15 picks in that range that are getting chewed up by Academy bids, are there?

Hard to asseas, but there may be some second rounders that only slide back a bit rather than being used up entirely. Suspect that 48 may creep in to 38-40, but not much more than that.

There will be a large number of picks consumed by matching bids in that range. The vast majority of picks in that range belong to the Swans, Dogs, Hawks and Port. Dons also have a pick in that range which could be used on Brand too.

Or an Isaac Smith :moustache:

Wouldn't that be nice...

Maybe we're at the stage where we can take a gamble like that. Hope we've done our homework.

Tried to check the draft order but the AFL keeps shitting itself.

Just because those clubs have picks there doesn't mean they'll be used up. Academy bids tend to be later than the phantoms suggest, so where we assume that two picks in the 30s might get burnt to match a bid, it could be that the latter of those picks only slides back half a dozen spots.

That's what I'm getting at when I say its hard to assess. Lots of moving parts, potential for live trades.

That trade is really a strange one and cannot see any value in it, There will be clubs using min picks and most would be looking to get out after picks 40 with possibly only 55 picks tken altogether.

I’m fairly sure that there aren’t too many secrets around the inner sanctums. Recruitment teams would know who is into who, what each team needs and how they might fill them. Pretty sure that couldn’t care less who we take at 31 in this crapshoot draft.

Thanks barass70

They know quite a bit, but they also aren't going to divulge who they are taking. I'm pretty sure there are teams who would definitely care who we plan on taking at that pick.

At what cost I wonder Zee? Hoping the club doesn't slice big into next years picks or at all really, just my 2c though.

As for the project ruck talks, I'm happy either way on this one. If there is one we see merit in this year, go for it. But if there isn't one, I'd rather just go with what we have rather than commit a two year contract. TDK and Pitto obviously to carry the bulk of it under the latter scenario. Casboult is more than capable if we have some bad luck with injuries, McKay a bit of a break glass in emergency and Liam Jones could probably do some work there if the injury apocalypse happened. We could also do a bit of a Geelong a take a mature ruck that's ready physically as a rookie for a season or two maybe ie. Corey Gault, Jackson Trengove etc.
My 2c on this is that we are better off getting one this year in a 'shallow' draft with a lot of talls, then later on in a strong Draft when there are a lot of decent Mids.

We could have consecutive picks - cool - no waiting around.

I just can't see the need to go so early with that trade, over the last couple of years pick swaps and upgrades from the mid to late 2nd round are easily done on draft night and with this draft probably the most unpredictable ever we have pretty much given away a future 3rd round pick away for nothing, the only reason I can think for doing the trade would be to trade the 2 seconds we now have for an earlier pick but their are much better ways to go about it.
