Shifter Sheehan gave Henry Walsh quite a glowing appraisal on radio today.
Seemed to rate him quite high.

We seem to like the brothers, don't we?
I think we would have piked up Sam De Koning if Geelong didn't take him before us. I don't know that as fact, but think it may have been the case.

I don’t know If Walsh is a player or not, I do know shifter has talked up every player from every draft he’s been associated with....Particularly academy kids.

I was hoping for SDK on draft night. Will take a bit to prise out of GFC now you’d think.

We did have the opportunity to snag brother T.Dow but opted for Philp as our speedy midfielder.

Really tough this year

Players that I believe would be around, with some interest

Jackson Callow, Shannon Neale, Michael Mallard, Connor Stone, Jack Carroll

Jack Carroll i think will be gone in the 1st round and doubt #38 will get him
I would be over the moon if he was still there at #36 for Richmond

The others all should still be on the board though.

Any small fowards you guys might be interested in ?

Carroll is an interesting one and I agree should go earlier, but others are moving up the order

Small forwards at that range, Corey Durdin and Seamus Mitchell

True but when asked about rucks in particular it was Walsh and Neale whose names were raised.

He does make every player sound like a potential superstar though....and does it ever so convincingly :)

Podcast is here -

I've seen some people go off at Henry Walsh saying that if it wasn't for his name we wouldn't be talking so much about him. I disagree, as if you actually looked at this years draft crop, Walsh is the best ruck available from the second round onwards.

If I was Austin, I would combine our picks 38 + 48 to a club for a pick around 24-26. That way we can secure a quality ruck with a mid second rounder, and continue to look at a KPD through DFA such as McDonald or Trengove.

Walsh is going to be back up ruck for De Konig or years. We need to draft for neeed if the disparity between that player and Walsh is not too great. A small forward and KPD are preferred.
Walsh and TDK could work in tandem as both seem to be quite athletic. I'm not sure of Walsh's forward craft just yet but he is a lot more mobile than Pitt.
If Walsh could show similar fwd potential to TDK it could be a great partnership.
Pitt unfortunately is to immobile that he can only play ruck and is a liability forward

Man Freo haven't got a good run recently of recruiting key forwards.

Recruited McCarthy and Hogan, spending considerable time and/or draft resources to bring them in. And losing both for nix.
Can't bring myself round to feeling sorry for them. They tried to lure McCarthy whilst he was under contract for massive unders, and they did the same to Hogan in his final contact year. The removal of Hogan from Melbourne ****ed them completely, as he was the fulcrum without which Melbourne's forward line no longer worked; sure, you can blame Melbourne for letting him leave, but he nominated pretty bloody fast and IIRC there was a bit of a smell around it at the time.

That neither of them came on is something of a quirk, but it's also kind of just desserts.

McDonald = Goddard. We'd be better off taking a speculative athletic tall in the draft. E.g. Liam Kolar.

Not sure there's a quality ruck in the early/mid second round. I like the idea of packaging those picks and trading up the board, however, I don't think pick 48 will be enough to push 38 into the 24-26 range. You need to pay a sizeable premium to move up the draft order. Realistically, our two picks might be enough to move us up to Sydney's pick 31 or Bulldog's pick 33 if we're lucky. Fair chance we end up drafting the same player at pick 38 anyway given the number of picks between the 30-38 range that will be consumed by academy bids.

Walsh might be available in the rookie draft. Endurance is a big question mark on him. Would I be correct in saying his 2km time trial is around the 8 minute mark?

If so, that's similar to that of Sam Hayes, which was enough to see him slide from a potential first round selection to a third rounder. That doesn't mean neither can't play or don't have the talent, it just means that clubs recognise these guys as project players and will rank them accordingly.

Expect project players to get drafted late or not taken with reduced list sizes. Clubs won't have the same luxury of carrying as many of these types (rucks more so than other types).

None of those kids will be able to step in for injuries, you still need mature cover

I feel like we're got enough cover for the immediate future (1-2 years). Beyond that timeframe concerns me, which is why I'd look for a draftee now as opposed to a DFA who'll most likely be off the list in a year.

Apart from Jones's concussion, both he and Weitering have been very durable. Feel like we can get away with just Casboult as backup for now.

Levi will have to play forward with Charlie out, even so, if two of Jones, Weitering Levi go down, kiss goodbye to finals

You can still draft a young tall and take a DFA

Will be interesting to see how that plays out.

Wouldn't mind seeing Teague play a smaller forward line. Not sure we need three tall forwards.

The only team I can remember to win a flag of late with three tall forwards was WCE. The fact that they won means I can't say it won't work for us, but I think we all need to keep in mind that Collingwood entered that Grand Final with no KPD's. Their defense was:

Crisp Langdon Maynard
Varcoe Goldsack Howe

It was always going to be difficult for them to curtail the influence of Kennedy, Darling and one of Lycett and Vardy resting forward with that undersized defense. Had Moore been playing, the game probably would have gone the other way.

Bottom line, I'm not convinced three talls holds up in finals anymore. Hopefully we use this opportunity to play smaller, agile ground level players.

Hey gun, are you guys looking at delisting more?
I dont think we will most likely just Alex Rance left to delist
