Geelong's excellent 2004 on-field campaign has been matched off the ground, with the club announcing a profit of $1.22 million for the year.

It is the fifth straight year the Cats have finished in the black and the result is $225,000 above the forecasted figure.

According to a release issued by the club, total operating revenue for the year was $23.5 million, which is an increase of $1.6 million on last year.

"The excellent result is primarily a reflection of the Club's strong on-field performance and the continued successful implementation of the Club's business plan strategies," said chief executive Brian Cook.

"The competitive, exciting brand of football attracted large crowds to home games and progression through the finals series resulted in substantial prizemoney."

The Cats will repay the final $700,000 of its long-term bank debt in March next year and has just borrowed $3.6 million to fund its final contribution to the redevelopment of Skilled Stadium.

The new Eastern Stand will open at the ground on 1 May next year, when the Cats play their first game of the season against the Western Bulldogs.

Good news indeed!

But does this not mean our club's debt is now $3.6 million rather than $700,000??

Its all good, if we have another good year next year and people flock to Kardinia then I think we may be up there with the Pies with profits. $3.6m will be paid off pretty quick of we can keep up in the 8 - top 4 for next few years.

You dont need the big grounds for a big profit, this is great for the club.

Bring on 2005!

Yes, but the difference is that Cook has it well under control with loans and interest rates that won't cripple us in future.

It's also money borrowed which will make the club money over the next few years. More seats = more revenue, especially when the team is going well on field.

We've got Cook and Costa to thank that we still have a club and will have for years to come. Fantastic!

Haha - Are these trolls getting dumber?

Fantastic work by cook & costa.
Considering the mire we were in a couple of years ago, they have done a brilliant job in turning things around.

3.6 mil sustainable debt, with banks wanting to deal with you, money in the bank, growing supporter base with an improving list is easy compared to 7mil in debt, no bank wanting to touch you, no cash in the bank, ageing list and ground and club directors having to put in cash to pay the bills.

This is showing why the other clubs (Eddie included) have raved about the current board and CEO.

Unsewn that glistening number 5 yet, kidda?

In all seriousness, not much needs to be said that hasn't been said by one Journalist or another poster on BigFooty.

Geelong's financial management, under the talented Brian Cook has been close to the best in the competition. We are very lucky to have him, and he has stated publicly (at least i believe so) that he will not leave until all his plans have been undertaken. Rebuild the whole stand over 25 years i say ;)

Or he gets a better job, which seems inevitable considering his performance with both us and West Coast. Really, he should be AFL CEO now.

WHat number is Otto wearing next year?

I dont care we still have more money :p

8 consecutive profits, 4 being over 1 million dollars.

But anyway good on the cats, its good to see another club being successful off the field.
