"Geelong stars Max Rooke and Andrew Mackie have been cleared by the match review panel and will be free to line up against Richmond at Skilled Stadium on Saturday.
Steve Johnson was booked by the panel for attempting to strike the Hawks Luke Hodge, but the resultant points will leave him clear to play whether he challenges the report or not.
Rooke was reported for bumping Hawthorn skipper Sam Mitchell, while Mackie was reported for striking Brent Renouf.
Hawks ruckman Simon Taylor has been assessed a three week penalty for dropping his knee to Joel Selwood’s head, and Hodge was cleared of striking Tom Lonergan."

Seems the umpires have taken up where the MRP left off last year. Let's hope they improve in coming weeks.

Good result for us, and it is good to see Taylor getting a just punishment for what he did.

Who was the last player charged with attempted striking? Was it Lynch?

Pretty sure there has been a few, Hall got 2 weeks (1 with early plea) last year for it, the last game before he was dropped 'indefinitely' if you recall.

Johnson may as well go back out and actually whack Hodge in the jaw if he is gonna get suspended for NOT whacking him in the jaw.

Thats great news! Although, i am surprised Johnson got done considering he actually missed Hodge. Guilty of stupiditity more than anything, and actually a bit lucky that he didnt connect.:thumbsu:

Very good results all round.
There was nothing in the Hodge one and none in any of the cats decisions.

Very Very happy that the dog Simon Taylor got weeks. Weak as piss act by a talentless footballer.

I am mystified on how Hodge was cleared.

How can you run at someone front on with no eyes for the ball, punch them in the head and escape sanction?

This was not incidental contact, it was intentional, just like his dangerous attack on Chapman's head/neck region.

The AFL need to get rid of this blatant sniping.

Intentional or not it was definitely reckless. He was lucky he didn't cause serious damage.

He barely touched him. Think that might have something to do with it. Obviously it was fairly reckless but I reckon it was just to say "here I am" rather than to actually get Lonergan with any force.

Good news, though expected, that our blokes got off.

SJ is contesting his "hit"

Interesting.

Probably the "low impact" grading. How an attempted strike which doesn't make contact can be low impact is beyond me.

Might get off on a technicality.

If there was impact, it could not have been an attempted strike it has to be a strike. If there was no impact, it cannot be assessed as having a force of low impact.

My brain is confused, traditionally incredulous dumbness by these so called rules.

Are you equally mystified on how Mackie was cleared?

How can you punch a guy twice behind play and escape sanction?

This was not incidental contact, it was intentional.

I agree with both nohairandfair and markr. All players throwing soft or hard punches should get a penalty graded from reprimand to 8 weeks depending on the severity. Mackie was a reprimand and minimum points. The best players will be targeted with this sort of aggression many times a game if allowed.

The running back with the ball and striking the marking player is another. Its now open slather - can't quite spoil ? then just throw out the fist and hope it connects with something. Players head will do. Duty of care applies here also. Minimum points to 8 weeks if the hit is full on and does damage. Hodge should have got a reprimand and minimum points too.

Rooke was on the borderline. The contact was exaggerated too much by Mitchell doing a dive and that probably saved Max.

I am not happy with a system that requires damage to be done to attract a serious sanction. The intent should be judged not the damage.

The current system leads to anomalies where a bump carried out like everybody was taught to use it can result in 4-6 weeks if accidental damage occurs! (The Maxwell bump penalty would now stand with new rules.) A left hook (eg Barry Hall ) gets 4 weeks if no jaw was broken but 10 weeks if the jaw is broken. Why the difference? - any serious strike with intent is worth big weeks.

Johnno clear:

The Tribunal was also quick to clear Geelong's Steve Johnson of an attempted striking charge against Luke Hodge, accepting his evidence that he was trying to push the Hawk away.

Absolutely!! That monster Mackie is gonna KILL someone one day!!!

I'm just glad Rooke got off. If he had off got suspended for that bump on Mitchell, after Mitchell got off for his hit on Ablett in the GF it would have been one of the worse decision in history.

Really can't help you with the above but if SJ had been given points for his air swing then Mitchell's elbows should have gone for a dozen matches last season. Is he cross-eyed or does he miss with intent I asked myself on numerous occasions as he let one whistle past an opponent. Probably wants to be seen as a tough man but frankly with his ability he doesn't need to be a sniper. Had a good role model in Crawford, so what's his problem? Sam, please don't play it again. Sam?
