Stewart in current form is a net negative.

If he is carrying something he should be left out, get fit, and hope he recaptures his form just before finals.

As it currently stands, I don’t think we are any better with him in the side. So why play him through this issue?

It would be a major positive to have prime Stewart come into the team later in year, especially if teams are not putting in place plans to curb him.
Probably Stewarts call at the moment.

He wasn't alone there though
I thought our handball game last night was as bad as I can remember
Especially forward hand balls

Probably Stewarts call at the moment.
Hard to know if there's actually an issue with him or he's just out of form. Someone told me the Herald Sun named Stewart in the best Geelong players, and I see the AFL match report had him in the best also.

What are we missing here?

If he gets coaches votes I may need to concede that I know nothing about football.

I'd play Clohesy ahead of Close who has been a bit hit & miss across the season

I have no doubt that Clohesy can play a defensively minded role but would he be capable of doing so for 4 quarters - especially against the likes of an Anderson or Rowell?

We need to remember that Clohesy is still only 20, not turning 21 until September; Mullin is 25 and we can see the strength in his body & especially through his legs. Competing against Anderson who turned 24 in Feb & Rowell who turns 24 next month, think I'd be leaning towards the more mature body
I'm not sure about Clohesy as a defensive mid particularly if the ask is to lock down a quality mid. I think he may be to "see ball get ball".

They called him 'Junk Time Jezza'!
In fairness, on the KRock broadcast, Zach Tuohy had them in stitches by suggesting that as soon as he realised it was over, Jezza would kick 4. He said that beforehand.

I suspect he means that Jez only isn't selfless when it's percentage building time.

edit: re Stewart, let's calm the farm here. He reminds me of Harley - the road back to form meant a few games of dropping marks we're used to him getting. He's running unecumbered as far as I can see - just getting his touch back. That was Tuohy's comment on K-Rock, too. I regard them as essential listening when he's calling.

Should consult us on here. We're a bit touchy at times. :p

Yes. Looks like he is held together with sticky tape and bandages. Plays like it too
Feel sorry for Clohesy always subbed into a hot game with limited time. I agree, give him a crack at a full game or two out of the pressure cooker.
Needs a nice juicy game against a norf at KP or so to maybe get him some confidence, but so far we've not really had too many this season yet. And WCE were really up for the game yesterday, perhaps something about their unique Federation Day holiday tomorrow, but I have to say, being someone who picked Oscar Allen several weeks ago as an anytime goalkicker against Freo, where he probably had minimal more impact on the game than I had by sitting on my 57 y/o backside (got subbed off after being sent to full back). His game yesterday seriously he hasn't remotely looked that good playing any game probably since gather Round 2023 when both he and waterman kicked 4 against us that day too. Poking the tongue out after snapping his goal, tackling, he's their captain but honestly he'd been invisible for yonks. Maybe now that Waterman is out for the season he's decided to step right up, but he led from the front early doors, and to be honest when we were less than a goal up late in the 3rd I was rather concerned.

But, the side settled down and applied a lot more pressure on the Eagles midfielders, causing their entries to be stifled, and we began to get intercept possies. Plus JC came to play, and we generated a heap of scoring chances in the last quarter too. In the end, I'm happy to take an interstate win by 7 goals over an opponent that really fired up, as many sides tend to do when seeing the hoops.

The Suns game next week is an 8-point game, and I'm sure finally playing them at KP might get our side really focused on their strengths and the fact that they pretty much occupy a spot on the ladder we covet. IN a way they play their footy like Richmond did under Dimma, the high pressure runball 'Ozkick for Adults' type stuff, but they at least have no Dusty, and importantly for Geelong, no bloody Lukocious who plays like prime Gary Sr when he sees Cats jumpers, especially up North. Pretty sure Scott and the match committee will have the players primed for a big effort, as winning this (and then having to face the Lions after the bye), we have a tough couple more games to go. If we can win these two games, then we can be pretty confident that our season will be one where we can aim for a Flag.

Only some maybe forgetting Geelong are one of the most professional outfits in the AFL with a recent history of being over conservative with player injury management and we are only half way through the season if there were any real concerns I'm confident he wouldn't be out there now.In saying that he will be managed at some stage over the winter.

I'm not sure about Stewart either. Unsure whether he just needs another couple of games before normal service resumes. He looks like he is not judging the flight of the ball properly nor reading the play in front of him well. He is an interceptor which means when that is not working he is a poor defender. He is often getting caught in "no man's land". I wonder if he should be played somewhere else until he finds touch. Perhaps onball?

Turn the heaters off in he visitors rooms this weekend job done.

We have a new leader in the Coaches' votes. Still unsure if he'd crack the Bulldogs best 23 but a nice first half of the season in the bag.

Bulldogs' VFL team would be pretty strong if Baz was still on their list.

They pushed us hard, though. If they keep on playing like that against other teams they won't be cellar dwellars for too much longer.

Of course they'll have to do it without Harley Reid;)
Their only uncompetitive game at home this season was their first one against GC. In fact home or away they have put up a good fight for 2 or 3 quarters most weeks before fading late. The match went to script if anything.

He's dropping marks that would normally be sodas for him. We are seeing the same with Sicily this year. Whether it's due to injury, lack of form or just an indication of decline remains to be seen. But with both these players there has been no appreciable turnaround at this stage of the season.
Stewart has been way better than Sicily since returning. Chalk and cheese. He's just a good player with some limitations now (as opposed to superstar interceptor), but is not a ticking time bomb with ball in hand like ranga James.

Exactly this. They led at 3/4 time v Brisbane at the GABBA, before Lions won by 19.
17 points down at half time v Crows at AO before getting blown away in the second half.
Lost to Essendon and Richmond (away) by 2 points each.

I posted before the game that a 30 point win and no injuries would be a success and it's about what we got. The type of win you just need to professionally tick off the list.

We are used to 9/10 performances most of his career so now 6 or 7s feel like 3 or 4s. That's sort of how BigFooty works. He was genuinely horrible against Carlton but has been fine (not great, just fine) in the games since returning.

In reality what happened was WCE tired out and couldnt flood back as well which meant cameron got space and isolation on ginbey which was always going to be a problem.

Anyone can look a million bucks as a defender when your side floods back ti help you out. It’s how you hold up isolated that tells the story a little more.

Cats evolving defensive strategy

Was apparent Cats played a Zone Press
Aggressively attacking the contested ball
Working hard to outnumber opposition
Aim was to create maximum turnovers
Ensuring players were there to capitalize
This is a High Risk / High Reward strategy
Reward is creating goals from turnovers
Cats rank #1 for Goals from turnovers
Biggest risk is opposition breaking through
Simply by getting ball outside the contest
Cats retained 3 interceptors as sweepers
Cats are best at stopping ball inside D50
Average at defending ball getting into D50
This trade off that is working well so far.
Requires entire team to apply pressure
Takes an exceptional play to break thru
Effectively stopping the in-form Bulldogs
Cats also flood back D50 when possible
Yes is can be frustrating sometimes
Football evolves and teams adapt quickly.
A passive zone can be easily cut through
Premierships are won by innovators

I feel more confident seeing COS around the contest than I do with SDK.

One reads it, attacks it, competes. The other not so much.

That said SDK did play better in the second half, but it says less about the quality of his play than it does about his first half.

Unless the contest is deep in defence.

COS is very shaky when required to defend closer than 30m from defensive goal. If he is attacking the ball across half back or between the 50m lines he is awesome.

Teams are going to try and exploit him deep in defence, thankfully we have the flexibility in defence to avoid this, as long as j Henry (and ideally Kolo) are available.

Strangely, it felt like we missed Bews being steady down back yesterday.

COS will get there. I give him the benefit of inexperience atm, but I just don't know what to make of SDK.

He's a real ordinary player atm imo, and our backline looks unbalanced. I'd give him a spell in the VFL if it were me, but as others have said it's unlikely to happen.

He is going ok, but is very much a victim of his high standards. Because he is not in automatic AA form he is considered to be “out of form”.

Thankfully the emergence of others (ie. Zuthrie, Lawson, etc) means we can cover for his moderate decline. In seasons gone by we would have been stuffed.
