Not that they deserve too much credence by the AFL ratings system had Mannagh our 2nd best on the night behind Dangerfield. Regardless he's just super clean. His biggest blemish was a lookaway handball to Stewart(?) - not that it missed the target, but even Stewart had no idea it was coming his way out of congestion.

Had Cats Radio on for around 3/4 of match with Ben Graham and Cam Mooney. Biased of course, but not so one-eyed that the opposition didn't exist and they are footy-knowledgeable. For example they gave Steven May 1 vote in their 3-2-1, which is higher than most "neutral" pundits. And they did talk a fair bit about where-to for the dees. Had it synched with the TV, so wasn't looking for deep insights.
When the result was beyond doubt, had a bit of fun, like calling players by their number predecessors, hence past luminaries such as Craig Biddiscombe and Peter Street got a mention. It was pretty obvious that they were having a great old time, which makes for better radio. Mooney mentioning at one point where he was happy that he was freed from effort and the constraints of having to be impartial.
Would listen again.

Those ratings really fail to take contested marks, marks i50 and goals into account, as well as where possession is won. Anyone with two functioning eyeballs could see that Jesse Hogan and Riley Thilthorpe were best-on in their games respectively, and yet they both placed 4th or 5th.

Hard to argue with those. Mannagh already adds so much in just his first game of the year and Bailey Smith is flying under the radar - awesome start to his Geelong career.

Despite Doggies fans in every thread on Reddit, BigFooty and Facebook pretending not to care and saying they "couldn't wait to see the back of Bailey Smith"
They seem to be adamant and care an awful lot to mention every miskick or fumble he's done soo far.

But if they actually watched the games instead of just watching highlights they'd know for a guy that didn't play for nearly 2 seasons coming off an ACL he's been freaking incredible.
Massively the difference between Cats best and worst, his ball extracting abilities are severely underrated.

Holmes and Baz gonna be locking down the midfield for the next decade.

Even just watching on the tele you can see him run himself ragged constantly giving the guy with the ball an easy option. If he doesn't get used he still draws someone and opens up space for others.

Not that I am aware of, I guess you just had to be there. A huge difference from when I listened to Blues Radio last year when they were getting thumped by Hawthorn. Dave Hughes just being a dick and a really pissed off Mark Maclure. It sounded like Sellers had to walk out lest he lost control and thumped Hughesy. Painful stuff

AFLCA votes are in:

Geelong v Melbourne

10 Patrick Dangerfield (GEEL)
5 Connor O'Sullivan (GEEL)
4 Shaun Mannagh (GEEL)
4 Bailey Smith (GEEL)
4 Zach Guthrie (GEEL)
2 Sam De Koning (GEEL)
1 Steven May (MELB)
COS with 5 and danger 10 means both coaches put votes into COS.

COS officially has more coaches votes than games played.

If you are referring to the overall context as either A) people get sensitive and defensive when a player is criticized, unless i am personally attacking something unrelated to football such as his appearance or beliefs or anytging else non-football related.. Then others need to read the context a little better. This is a football forum, to discuss all things fooyball, including things not going so well.. Which means both team level and individual level.

But if you mean the context of shannons contribution to the team, i have discussed that we may need to look at some point dropping him if his output continues and run a smaller more mobile forward half playig through ollie and cameron as our targets.

Both the above sent several people into sensitve outbursts.

This is a footy forum, to discuss good and bad at a football level. Some people struggke to read

geelong_crazy26: below is what I posted a few posts previously and is what I mean by 'context' which in your writings you fail to mention and the reason why Shannon Neale 'will not be dropped from the side' but by all means have your opinion for as you say this is a 'footy forum'. Although like with me, I do think Chris Scott and MC will see things a little bit differently to you as they very much value and not underestimate the current importance of Shannon Neale with his 'vital and strategic role in our the side'.... and GO CATS !!!

REPOST ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️

Structurally, Shannon Neale is extremely important to Geelong and although his game against Demons wasn't to the heights we'd like, he did have an 'excellent last quarter' which was great to see. Shannon, being such a 'mountain of a man' but also so athletic, was also unlucky not to get a few frees by either being blocked, subtlety pushed in back or arms hit in marking contests. It was so noticable how Melbourne backman 'in tandem' were constantly stopping him from having a run at the ball which is something he'll need to adjust to better but there is an upside because it does allow a player like Paddy Dangerfield a little more freedom to take marks while Shannon is being the heavy focus.

Shannon also takes most of the forward-line rucking duties in forward half which allows our main ruckman to sit behind play which sets us up so much better from a defensive point of view and by Shannon taking the odd centre bounces it also lessens the load for our main rucks.

At present my main criticism of Shannon is that he drops too many marks that he has in his hands, therefore the hard work has been done as he has the ball in his hands but he drops the ball. To me, it comes down to technique..... with him 'fully stretching his arms to mark without turning his elbows in' which is the wrong thing to do as you end up with 'flat hands', you need when flying for a mark 'to turn BOTH your elbows in' which when doing this action 'turns your hands out, thus making far easy to mark the ball' but also while doing this action 'you MUST have soft hands', learn to do that and his marking issues will be over!

and he took a handpass from Mullin on his break through the corridor late 3Q, looked left to Smith instead of Mullin steaming past into open country on the way to 50 arc. Would have been interesting to see what he would do at full gallop getting the ball I50.

Fair enough. Good post and great opinion. Tbh i am probably a bit done with this topic but i appreciate your effort and analysis

Absolutely love COS , but let's be prepared to support him when he doesn't have it all his way.
He's a 19 yo and there are going to be some downs which , I'm sure he'll treat as learning experiences ✅

geelong_crazy26: you're still partially right with Shannon getting lost in play &/or out of position and in doing so not contributing enough to the team in parts of games but as explained he has been asked to play some very significant roles within the team and for such a young inexperienced 'big man' in AFL, I do think he gets a little lost or confused at times to what he should be doing or how to specifically play his role but I'm sure with a few more games under his belt he'll make significant improvements in these areas which will make both you, me and fans very happy, here's HOPING..... and GO CATS !!!

One of the most exciting moments I've seen yet from Mullin was 30 seconds to go in Q3. He collects the ball at half back, short kick to SDK, then runs on up the middle to receive the handball, finds Mannagh with hands, and keeps powering past him. Unfortunately Mannagh looks the other way and gives to Smith but Mullin was absolutely flying and would have easily run or delivered the ball into our forward 50 under zero pressure. He's so quick and agile. That's impressive enough. But he's also starting to make really good decisions. And while Mannagh didn't choose him on this occasion, he did everything right.
