Might seem a bit strange to bring this up given our magnificent record of the last couple of seasons, but can't help but have a wry smile at the talk of the Eagles/Demons game, and saying how maybe the eagles can't afford to win due to potentially losing a draft pick.
In complete contrast to this is the rather impressive record Geelong has had since 1971. Every season from 1972 onwards Geelong has won six games or more. Even before the draft came in after the 1986 season, Geelong always tried to win, even in poor seasons. A little research in years like 1972, 73, 75, 86 and 2003 (The years Geelong started the season poorly) saw Geelong win late games in the year. 2003 was significant, that win by Geelong over the Saints in Round 22 almost has written the script on the direction the two clubs have gone in the subsequent time.
Geelong now i reckon are reaping the justified rewards of a side that has never tanked, and does things the right way. Only Adelaide of any side in that span has had no season of worse than seven wins, and Geelong has impressively never finished with fewer than six wins in the last 36 seasons.
