Which do you prefer & why?

I think Dogs are too high maintenance, a lot of breeds need a huge amount of exercise to maintain regular health. Their barking is annoying, they are more aggressive and damaging. They are dirtier, they slobber on you, and they shit everywhere.

You have to go outside to spend time with them, whereas Cats are great company at night (& while posting on BF :D). They don't eat as much, they clean themselves, yet they still have a lot of character & personality, and are very interactive and friendly.

Thoughts?

used to always hate cats for not having the loyalty that dogs have and being too fussy until recently. friend of mine has a cat with a great personality always wants attention really likes people and has piercing blue eyes and is very playful... has made me reconsider my position about cats. i`m still hesitant around cats as ive never had one at times am unsure how to interact with them. also am allergic to cat hair... anytime i go to a friends house that has a cat i have to take an anti hystimine

Dogs are the better of the two. Always happy to see you and cannot get enough of their 'master'. Cats on the other hand are very strange individuals. People dont have cats for pets; cats have people for pets. My dog sits next to me wherever i am and follows me around. i enjoy the loyalty and he is good with the kids too.

Have had both in the past, currently just have a cat. Both have their good and bad points and like both, but dogs are better. They are more loyal (beyond just when they want something, or want to be worshiped) and you can take them out places for a walk, or along with you to the park etc.

So Dog > Cat >>>> Pretend dog, that's cat sized

Don't hate cats, and understand why they're right for some, but you can't match the unconditional affection you get when you come home to a waging tail.

I've had this argument with my mates plenty of times(one of which has now turned full circle and has a Bengal kitten).

Cats are mini-people. They have the arrogance to only hang out with you when they feel like it, but also the need for companionship. I can dig that.
If they want a feed, or need to go outside they'll let you know, but for the most part they're just the silent sidekick that hangs around the house, perhaps laying on your lap, or sleeping on the couch beside you.

Dogs need to have their behaviour monitored so much more from a young age. Whether it's because they bark at every person that walks past the front gate or digging holes in the back lawn.
You get them as a puppy and hope that they aren't going to develop some trait that will render them impossible to live with. Obedience training is a must with many breeds.
The very trait that endears them to many people ('my dog follows me everywhere, can't get enough of their master') turns me off them in a lot of cases.
I hate going to mates houses and having their dog jump on me, lick my feet, or just generally 'suck up my arse' as soon as I walk in the door.

The position of a cat when you walk in the door is just like a human. "well, I'm pretty comfy over here, make yourself at home...but I'm not getting up unless I really have to."

The other Pros of a Cat.
Cats don't bite kids.
They don't eat your shoes.
They don't hump your leg.
They don't drag their arse on the carpet.
They don't bark at all hours of the night.
They don't need your constant attention.

My dogs don't do any of those.

I love cats. Especially with BBQ sauce.

Didn't really like cats until I got one myself and now I reckon they're about even with dogs.

I'd agree with Galon that they are more humanlike in their demeanour and my little guy has such a great temperament and I feel lucky he is affectionate and seems to attach himself to people.

That being said, I've also got cats at my dads house and they are the most boring of creatures - won't let you pick them up, spend all day lying away from the family etc and I can see why some people dislike them.

Dogs are pretty champion pets though. My dogs (and most) crave attention and appreciate the time they have with you.

Nil all draw.

If you give your dog the curtosy of proper training these won't be an issue.

Dogs are pack animals and they need strong leadership, give them that and you run the show and everyones happy for it.

If you stop feeding your cat....will he still come home at night?

I have the most awesome cat, but i would really like to have a dog as well. Preferably when one of my greyhounds stop racing, id love one of them at home. Not sure how they would go with my cat though, as its pretty much his house now and I'd hate to upset him...

Yep.
And he's lived in three separate house with me around Victoria.
One of the more annoying traits he had was following me to the pub on a sat'd night. Thankfully that's ceased.

If I'm playing Ps3 or watching telly, he's sleeping on the top of the recliner above my head.
When I had my desktop PC, he was....

Cat's can be just as affectionate as Dogs. They just come without the other issues that you need to train out of dogs.

The other difference between people who like Cats and people who like Dogs, is that too many people who like Dogs find a need to harm Cats, which makes no sense to me.

If you don't like the animal, leave it alone.

Btw, I grew up with a Great Dane, and also Border Collies. If I was getting a dog, it'd be one of those two.

Sounds like you have one of those dog like cats. Neighbour has one of them.

As for the abbove bit...that's not cool, people who harm animals don't deserve them.

Yeah, there's some truth to this. I just don't have to worry about him humping my leg or eating my shoes. ;)

Dogs for me.

A dog with a good temperament, like the ones I had growing up and the one I had until recently, are golden. I like a dog that will come for a pat sometimes, but can go occupy itself in the backyard chasing birds if you are busy.

Dogs bite but cats scratch. I'm more confident rapping a dog on the nose if he plays up, knowing that all will be forgotten within the hour. I don't think I'd be able to do the same with a cat.

And not all dogs make a mess and wreck shoes. We had a staffy when I was a kid, she was fine. Then we got a dalmation and she was a ****. Until recently I had another staffy and he was the best dog I've had. Perfect temperament and an excellent companion. I still go see him in his new home and he still comes up to me like I've never left. Love that loyalty.

used to be a dogs man but my living situation doesn't give me the room or time for a dog.

I used to have a border collie, best dog ever & smart as hell too.

Now I've grown used to having cats & the wife loves them so I voted for cats.

Dogs for me. Have a Staffy/Border Collie cross, liked to have a chew when he was a pup - 2 sofas gone - was okay they were old and shit. Turned 6 months and the Border Collie kicked in - sharp as a tack, shits and pisses down the back garden, loyal, barks when needed, loves a run but can amuse himself most of the time. Still got the staffy component where he's friendly with everyone. Been fixed, so doesn't hump anything.

As for weak as piss ####s who harm any sort of animal, wouldn't piss on any of them if they were on fire.

Still fuming over the hard nut who a few weeks ago shot a border collie, then ran it over, then just for good measure backed over it again. C###!

We've got two cats who have been with us for about 12/13 years. They're your run of the mill moggies with maybe a bit of burmese in them and they're great.

The male of the two I'd claim as 'my' cat. He follows me around the place whether I'm in the lounge room, working on the computer, or tidying up my room he's usually not too far behind sleeping on the floor. He has also recently started following me into the bathroom and lies on the bathmat while I'm in the shower. He lets me pick him up, is friendly with everybody, likes to communicate with people, doesn't scratch or hiss, he's just a really cool cat.

The female is a little more temperamental and has a bit of attitude. She'll hiss and scratch, and is scared of strangers. However she is more of a lap cat, which is nice, but she is also more of an outside cat.

I think cats make perfect pets. I can't ever see myself ever having a dog as a pet but I certainly not an anti-dog person.

So I'm the only on that voted neither!

I can't stand cats, but moreso their owners who feel its ok for them to wander and piss anywhere on my property car etc, and scratch the paint on my car aswell. And dogs, well the ones in my area, bark to much for mine and you have to clean up after them.

So atm I am definitely neither but later on in life I'll be more inclined to pick a dog over a cat.

I really wanted a dog but got a kitten instead. Have found her a lot easier to look after, she just does her own thing. Although, she can be a little bitch and wake me up at all hours by biting my feet, or go missing (I've just moved house and she keeps finding new hiding spots). But I love her :)

One of her "spots" (WTF?)

This bit doesn't make sense.

Not all dogs do this, infact from a large family all of whom own dogs i'd say if they're trained from an early age as they should be then next to none of them will (albeit i'm used to smarter breeds)

Cats scratch kids
They scratch couches and carpets and curtains
they meow ... much more annoying than a bark
the times they do want attention they're annoying if you're not in the same mood whereas a dog can be told no.

I don't hate either but i'd much prefer a dog.

Don't mind cats but dogs quite easily for me.

Always happy to see you and love you unconditionally. Whereas if you come home to a cat they usually don't give a shit that you're home because they're too busy exploring your neighbours garden. Dogs are much more obedient and friendly as well :thumbsu:

and flop down on the floor either side of your chair while you're on BF as I type now.

You can be having a shocker of a day but as soon as they spot you coming in the gate it's like you've been away for months not just a few hours and they're soooooo excited to see you that all those negative feelings fly away.

Dogs>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Cats by a country mile....

Dogs by nature are everyones friends....Cats however, are no ones friends they are selfish and ignorant...:thumbsu:
