Does anyone else fancy themselves as being able to find the winners 3 months out????

I've been dabbling for 10 or so years, never snagged one although I've been live into the Melb Cup twice.

So does the lure of the huge odds in July/August grab you?

If anyone wants to tell me they are really under the odds etc,

Save it, I've heard it all before.

Show me where else you can get the thrill of having a horse with a genuine winning chance running for 15k for $10.

Anyone have one they really like, this far out?

I've only ever taken two. First was in 1994, Rough Habit in the Caulfield Cup, Paris Lane in the Melbourne Cup. Of course, Roughie won the Caulfield Stakes, ran a shocker in the Caulfield Cup, and then nearly won the Cox Plate next time out. Paris Lane won the Caulfield and ran second to Jeune in the big one. That was reasonably close.

The other one was either 1995 or 1996, Peep On The Sly into Donar. I think the Peepster made the field but never got warm, while Donar wasn't quite as good as I thought he was going to be.

Might have a look this year, although I'm now thoroughly convinced that you need WFA form to win the Melbourne Cup, and it's usually a rising WFA star who does it. So my long range prognosticator might need a polish.

Me and my late bro used to always have a stack of doubles with the greatest horse ever, Super Impose.

We would take him in Caulfield-Melbourne Cup doubles, Doncaster Handicap doubles etc.

Lately i've taken to a big slow grey trained at Cranbourne. Every year i take him in the Melbourne Cup leg of the double, sooner or later he will win it.

Yes Finally!!!!

Why is it that EVERYONE thinks you need a dour stayer,It's not 1975 anymore.
Since 1990 every Cup winner has had WFA form with one horrible exception,Brew, what a nightmare.

Not convinced you need to be a rising star but you DO need WFA form, even Subzero & Jezabeel had been competitive at WFA.

Perhaps "star" isn't the right term. What I meant that the WFA form is usually only making a first appearance in the WFA that spring.

Didn't Brew have some WFA form?

Don't think so,unless it was in his all conquering Brisbane winter sojourn. That cat put Melb Cup credability back 20yrs.

Although Kaapstad Way ran favourite that year (and should have won, thanks for nothing Damian) & he had plenty of WFA form.

So,in light of the topic, any early suggestions for this year?

For me,Caulfield Cup is a raffle, more study needed.

Melb.Cup- something with some signs of quality.
At this stage I'll be ending all my doubles with Helene Vitality.
Never seen it but it's o/s form is outstanding & Lindsay Park are due.

Seth

I'd be taking Don Eduardo in the Caulfield Cup, but not a clue for the Melbourne Cup. I'll look into it the next few weeks.

I'd suggest you wait, its'owner is some Filipino billionaire who's only interested in winning WFA races so apparently it's going to the Cox Plate.
Not sure if he's brilliant enough to win a Cox Plate though?

Sunline, Northerly and even Lonhro would be the one's in the Cox Plate to go for. The Caulfield Cup is perfect for Don Eduardo. They would be mad not to go for it.

So, a month or so down the track, what do we all think?

Personally I have Distinctly Secret,Beekeeper,Sixty Seconds & possibly Elegant Fashion as my live C.Cup chances.
They all end in Helene Vitality who was great first up but never got warm yesterday.

Who do you all like with less than a month to go?

These are the current doubles that I hold in my wallet for this year. Bets were placed 18/8/02.

Fields of Omagh/Don Eduardo - 145/1 looking good at this stage

Carnegie Express/Vinnie Roe - 120/1 anyone got any information on Carnegie Express as it ran some 3 weeks ago and haven't seen it since

CE / The Second Mortgage - 615/1
CE / Universal Prince - 220/1
CE / Don Eduardo - 145/1
Fields of Omagh - Universal Prince - 165 / 1

Might put a few more on this week with Don Eduardo as the anchor in the Melbourne Cup.

It had a slight setback last week & they had to give it anti-biotics so it missed a run in the Hill Stakes last Saturday.
Don't think it's life threatening but the less that goes wrong at this time of year the better.

Seth.

Latest Cup update

Heard that Silver Baron has broken down & will miss the Spring.

The Hawkes Melb.Cup curse strikes again.

Also Pugin has been sensationally backed into equal Melb Cup favourite (with Michael Eskander) & will be outright favourite if Magical Miss doesn't win the Turnbull.

No real surprise there, everyone wants to tell you it's a weight certainty. Take it with a grain of salt, think we may have heard it before, gotta get to the race first, could do a Kayf Tara.

Seth.

Caulfield Cup:

(leaving out Northerly&M.Miss, but if they run take Northerly one out)

Went to the TAB today and put on some doubles

Northerly/Magical Miss $65
