Actually if you put down Collingwood or "Jedi" as many do, it eventually gets placed under the "no religion" section anyway when the results are calculated.

I put down no religion, although I was tempted to go Collingwood, but either way you aren't really "screwing with the census", and plus it's religion, probably the most irrelevant section of any census IMO.:)

You can say that again.

No it doesnt! It goes under 'Not defined' which is very different. It counts as a religion, just is an undefined religion.

It is also a very relevant section of the census. Groups such as the ACL use these numbers to help influence the goverment.

What happens if I write Jedi Knight?

It gets counted as 'Not Defined' and is not placed in the 'No religion' category. This takes away from the 'No religion' numbers and therefore advantages the religion count. It was funny to write Jedi once, now it is a serious mistake to do so..

What kind of issues might this lead to?

Exaggerations and inaccuracies in the Census data may lead to groups wielding unrepresentative influence within government. By means of these inflated figures politicians may formulate or disallow laws and policies based on religious precepts.

Think internet censorship, discrimination against gay people, video game censorship, etc... These all are a result of too much religious influence in the government

I can see how that happens, because if you do put down an unrecognised religion, you are still saying you are religious, so the no religious section really doesn't apply.

Glad I put down no religion now.:)

I put no religion.

They should have included the question: "Who do you barrack for?"

I would have been interested to see the stats for that.

The fact that religious groups can influence government in a secular society if what is wrong with this country. I refuse to be part of it.
If majority of people in Australia become muslim does that mean we should all follow shari'a law?

Put down 'no religion' as much as I wanted to put Jedi. It's your own fault if you skew the results and end up with some horrific religious policy tailored to a broken demographic!

if that is what the majority of australians want.. then yeah probably..

Ok you convinced me with that.

I'd put Collingwood, but on you counsel changed it to zilch.

Spoilsport ;)

Obviously you and I have a different opinion on what role religion should play in politics and law. I believe in a secular society where no one religion dictates the laws of the country while everyone is free to practice their own religion without fear of prejudice or persecution.
Based on your logic, because the catholic church protects pedophiles, they should be able to de-criminalise that act if they have majority followers in Australia?
I guess we will have to agree to disagree on the subject.

nothing like religion to **** up a nice happy premiers board.

i wouldve thought the religion was footy, and we are followers of the collingwood faith.

ours is the only pure faith, the rest are damned forever. :D

who remembers that 1st sunday game in melbourne in 1981 vs essendon - the cheersquad dressed in nuns outfits etc. the press went overboard with the pro/anti argument.

we lost, but ricky barham took mark of the year.

Good to know I converted one person! I was intending to put Collingwood Jedi Knight until one of my mate's busted my chops about it.

im not talking about what role i think religion should or shouldnt play.

but if the majority of australians want it then isnt that what democracy is essentially all about?

I put down Collingwood as the religion for all 4 people in my house. If they build a mosque next door, I'll just have to convert them to the true faith.:thumbsu:

Not at all. If the majority of Australians wanted to legalise, say slavery, would you be cool with that? That's why we have a constitution, to protect the country from mindless mobs, for future generations.
