You guys do realise that the overwhelming majority of business owners the ones you call capitalists are small business owners ? they are not what you would call rich and in many cases they earn less than most workers .

How about we lay of small business ?

Personally I've never seen the chronically unemployed as such a sickening problem because they're so few and far between. My pet hate is pensioners who live in a million dollar property, who really could afford to downsize and fund their own retirement, getting a free ride on the government purse. This problem has gotten more and more prevalent in Melbourne and Sydney as well. Call me a heartless **** but I don't really care that they'll be forced to hand a lesser inheritance to their kids or have to move out the home they've lived in for decades. Might free up some more money for those pensioners who are actually poor.

Then what because some external market forces push up property prices they should sell their home where they raised their family so you can take a free ride on their wealth.

Don't think labour will get rid of the cashless welfare card , they didn't get rid of work for the dole last time .

Tough measures for people on the dole long term is something that most blue collar workers support .

If you pulled your head out of your arse long enough you'd realise MOST long-termers have a legitimate reason for being so.
Tough measures **** me.....

There's a dose of common-sense , take a minute if you need.

They got rid of it last time on the grounds it's a waste of money, and achieves little. I would imagine the cashless welfare card will go the same way too, particularly as it seems to be little more than a nice little earner for the Libs.

Yes but the LONG TERMERS GOUGH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

giphy.gif

There is no doubt there are long termers and they do know how to rort the system. By the same token there are Job Network agencies that no longer focus attention on these LTs. ie give minimal assistance and minimal help because they ( bot the LTs and the JNs) are comfortable with this approach. No extra KPIs if they get a 20 yr old off NS or a 55 yr old slacker.

Yet for all the bleating just remember that these LTs have gone through 2 different Government philosophies. They will bend and weave through it all. No use getting upset over them. They dont care about your faux outrage. If they do get upset , off to the doctors for a stress leave certificate

On the millionaire pensioners. I am in 2 minds. I agree there should be focus on these as well, but I also recognise that property prices have rocketed to the extent that even the property my grandparents lived in is now worth $800,000 and thats in Mile End. But if a pensioner owns a 2nd property I would be asking questions.

They kept work for the dole , they just increased the amount of time someone can spend on the dole from 6-12 months before they had to work for it .

What is the problem with the cashless welfare card ?

31 % of all people all meetings scheduled for people on the dole go unattended .

I don't believe that someone who is under 50 and does not have a disability needs more than 12 months to find a job if they leave no stone unturned in finding one .

Let me help you out champ. That 31% is a skewed figure. How do I know? I am unemployed and work part time. I declare my income and do all the activities required. I put my forms in showing job search activities along with my earnings.

My regular consultant is in England on a well deserved holiday for her sanity after having to deal with me ;) I put my form it at the desk and ask the girl to photocopy it and give it to my back up consultant. I leave and 3 days later get a note from Centrelink HO advising me I have failed to complete an activity and to call them. I ignore it as I know I have. I decide to call them after a week and found out that , somehow the girl at the desk did not pass on my sheet. I get it sorted at Centrelink who say they will call my JN.

That is 1 false strike added to your 31%

I submit my details to receive NS only to be told there is an issue again. I also did not receive my NS payment. I went into the JN only to be told the back up consultant was having Friday off. I spoke with the manager who went and checked and found out the back up consultant put a 2nd block ie instead of taking it off she put it back on. Oops . I ring Centrelink again. Again 1 hour on the phone waiting. Again I sort it out after he calls manager and she agrees with my story. Unblocked a 2nd time but no money till Monday. But hey everybody else is ok

2 times the system said I failed. I bet the system doesnt recognise any reversals and so therefore I say your 31% is full of shit

I owned a post office in country Victoria for 4 1/2 years, a lot of people came in to fax off their dole forms fortnightly, every single one of them, bar one, was rorting the system. The one not rorting the system, had two 20 something kids living with her that both were.

They used to move to country areas because the rent was cheaper and because Centrelink were more lenient on them due to lack of services and public transport. They'd work cash jobs, buy and sell things from clearing sales, sell on line, buy and refurbish things like caravans and cars and sell them.

The biggest rorters were couples in their 20s and 30s with multiple kids that lived together but officially had separate addresses, usually their parents who lived in the district too. He'd claim newstart and she'd claim a single mother's pension and all the other add ons. At least one of them and sometimes both would both be working for cash too.

Apart from the entire 1 job per 1500 people thing........

Tunnel-vision is a hell of a thing EH ????

Can see you frantically googling Daily Telegraph articles right now....

Out of interest how many instances of you receiving welfare have you had this occur? Ie. you had to submit the form 10 times you had the above occur once?

And you are assuming the reversals have not counted to the tally - do you know that it does get counted to the figure?

Your 1stpoint doesnt matter and on the 2nd of course. Its a Government stat dept.

How can you be unemployed yet employed?
When you get work 1 day a week and dont earn enough to supplement even the basic

You realise for the 31% to be due to a consultant being on holidays it would mean that 31% of job consultants would have to be on holiday all the time ?

This would be despite the fact anyway that your form to say you have searched for work is submitted online and by the way submitting a form is not a meeting .

Lets be real for some the dole is a lifestyle choice .

Isn't that underemployed rather than unemployed? I'm pretty (60%) sure that anyone gainfully employed is considered employed.

Not sure. I do know there are rubbery figures used ie part time work even if it is 1 hours duration is classed as employed. Yet if anybody requires ''top-up'' then in my books they are unemployed

How can you be unemployed yet employed?
A friend drives a concrete truck in the middle of nowhere
Sometimes he get 20 jobs sometimes he gets none over a week/fortnight
When he gets less than "x" him and his wife get the dole, when he gets above "x" they dont, in between they get some

The first does matter. For instance you had done the process 100 times and only had 2 occurrences of coming up as an issue it would debunk your theory that the number is skewed. I understand if you don't want to put a total number on it but a % would help prove your point

Tax is not a zero sum in-and-out equation. Tax is paid so we don't have the ignominy of stepping over the sick and starving in the streets while rushing to work so we can carefully save for the 1 in 2 chance of a cancer diagnosis in our own individual life time. All the same, there's a delicious irony in being accused of wanting a free ride on somebody else's wealth after demanding that those who can afford it should be paying their own way. Personally I'll be funding my retirement through a mix of superannuation and careful savings.

I don't buy into the emotional "but I've lived here all my life" or the "I raised my family here" crap. People who own multi million dollar properties should be told to figure out a way to tap into that resource before putting out their hand for a pension; even if it means their precious children won't be able to inherit their parents' fortune.

If every pensioner with a million dollar house traded it in for a house worth half as much and invested the profit intelligently, the annual return on that investment would be more than what they'd be receiving from the pension. They'd actually be living better. And they'd be paying for it themselves rather than having the rest of us shelling out big for more middle class welfare and forcing the truly poor to share the fund with those who don't need it at all.

But then again, I'm a lifter and not a leaner. I don't understand the mindset of those who prefer to mooch.

May be wrong on this but from memory the employment statistics are complete BS in this country. If I remember correctly as long as you claim to be actively seeking employment you are actually classed as being employed. Hence why unemployment figures are complete bullshit.

Note, I may be wrong on this but I studied this early last year and remember this point. Will have a look for the proper figures when I get home.
