I've certainly under-rated him - but he was very good Saturday night, and does give something a bit different. I'd tend to play Sloane off the wing when he returns and leave CEY in the midfield. We can always change this if the dynamic isn't right. Should be a good test against the Power this week.

In the game against Carlton it looked like CEY was raising his arms when taking possession in the contest or being put under tackling pressure in the same way as Greenwood does. Means that he's able to use his strength and reach to keep the ball away from opponents and get rid of the ball legally and effectively if tackled.

His form is streets ahead of Thommo's 2016 form, and probably on par with 2014/2015 Thommo. He doesn't give as many stupid frees away even though he plays that battering ram role that Thommo played for years.

CEY sits sixth across the whole league for centre clearances and his average per game is higher than any Crow dating back to Danger and Thompson in 2015, and is higher than Sloane and Gibbs have ever produced across a whole season. If there is a criticism, it’s actually his stoppage work around the ground - he lags behind the other midfielders for stoppage clearances... perhaps lacking running power/fitness to impact as many of these?

This is my biggest gripe with him still. I'm loving all the other work he is getting done in close, but he absolutely sucks at covering the spread. For such a mobile bloke too it's odd. He's a bit of a Scott Thompson at the moment. Putting in the grunt work through the middle, but anything outside of that defensively and he's struggling.

Thank god his field kicking has improved a whole lot, or else I could see him being in a bit of strife.

Has anyone else noticed his great ball handling skills on the deck?

Notice how he never takes possession with the balls in dispute on the ground? He always paddles it around with his hands almost like a soccer player would do with their feet, and waits until he has a clear chance to get the ball out before actually taking possession of it. His huge frame and reach allows him to do so, and it's worked a treat so far.

I wouldn't call CEY mobile.

I havent noticed that. Will look out for it.

Greenwood has the same issue, though I imagine when Sloane returns one of them could be back in the SANFL.

So... CEY...

Right now, he's best 22 out of the available players, and he's contributing well. When Sloane & Brouch are available he'll be out, plus I suppose when some of the kids hopefully come on, he might get pushed down the order.

As a player in maybe 23-27 position, he's very good. A lot of teams would be very happy to have him at that level of their depth, and he'd probably be best 22 at some of the lesser clubs. In 2019, if Sloane is gone and Brouch is still struggling to put together more than 10-15 games a season, we will need him.

What does that mean for our club? IMO it means we keep him, on maybe 1-2 year contracts. He's not in the delist category, and probably worth more to us than we'd get in a trade. What if he asked for a trade, for more opportunity? (I think that's doubtful) I suppose we should let him go for his sake, but IMO we'd be losing - even if just a little - in any trade.

Which is a roundabout way of saying - he's really picked up his game, he's a valuable contributor, keep him.

He investigated other opportunities at the end of last season, with our blessing, but noone was interested. That might have changed now, however.

CEY has been progressing week by week. Hope he rips it this week and pulls out a blinder for us! Would be nice if he wins the Showdown Award.

I've already given up on Brouch returning this year, if he does it will be a bonus.
Yep. Even if he gets on the field he'll be so rusty and underdone. Difficult to see him having an impact.

I don't seem to notice Greenwood anywhere near as much, he doesnt seem too bad at covering the spread.

I still remember so vividly passage after passage of play from the Richmond game involving Martin just slipping out the back of a pack and in acres of space. It appeared as if CEY was matched up on him too for most of the game.

Harsh, he moves more than well enough for a big guy.

I just think he's reading of the game and awareness is lacking sometimes. Seems to be fine with the ball, but when he has to defend it's like its's a completely different story. Bit of a one way street player, the 'see ball get ball' type. Dont think his athleticism has anything to do with it.

Poor old Vader can't handle the fact a player he'd "famously" written off and consigned to the delist bin is playing some pretty decent AFL standard football.

I reckon things might have changed in both directions - more clubs might be interested, and he might be less inclined to want to move for opportunity. Although I think/hope he understands his place in the pecking order at AFC and that he's not ensconced in the 22.

Perhaps a more secure/longer contract at another club, perhaps on a little more money, would tempt him and I wouldn't blame him for that.

I definately feel he’s underrated among many of us BF supporters though.. looking around the other boards, he has spiked the interest of a few other clubs suppoters.. seen him mentioned on both the saints and hawks board in the last week as possible option to trade in at the end of the year... even had a saints supporter last night ask me about him off topic (whilst discussing Sloane) and said a “4th rounder” for CEY... pffft.. no thanks!..

I’ve really enjoyed most of what CEY has done so far this year and I have felt he is getting better with every game... actually felt he was probably close to our best mid against Carlton. And more so after I watched the replay last night. He had a hand in getting/keeping the ball moving in a lot of our goals on Saturday night... especially in that first quarter. Some nice handballs out of the congestion to Gibbs etc.. his field passes a pretty bloody good too.. always hit their target.. dare I say it better than mcrouch and lairds which always seem to be rushed kicks to contests though..

I hope they offer him atleast a two year contract at the end of the season and I wouldn’t be the least bit suprised if other clubs come knocking on his door with a three or four year contract to see if he’s interested in moving especially if he misses out on a lot of the second half of the year because bcrouch returns...

He’s only 25.. if he keeps improving and is consistency picking up 20-30 touches a game with many being contested possies.. he’ll be a good addition to any teams list and you’ll get another 5-7 years out of him.

If we lose Sloane (and I definately think we will) it will make holding on to CEY a priority.

What’s he on now as a rookie?... if another club offered him 3-400k a year for 3-4 years and we lowball him and he isn’t getting regular AFL games in the second half of the season he might consider going elsewhere.
