Anyone interested in doing a preview for our first final please PM me.

Edit: thanks mpal6 ! If anyone else is still interested I'll also take expressions of interest for our second final, whoever and whenever that might be.

Marshall, Dixon, Lycett and McKenzie all expected to be available for week one of finals. I reckon keeping Dixon and Marshall quiet in the key to winning.

Saints at mcg which is interesting
Giants are very skillful. Ross will be hoping for less than ideal conditions, so MCG probably gives them a better chance to win.

Saints are going to get flogged, because they don’t have a game plan other than “shut the game down and hope the opposition gets bored and stops trying”. That is quite literally Ross’s only gameplan, and it’s why his teams never can get it done - the opposition doesn’t go to sleep in finals.

Port when in form are probably the quickest play on overlap run side in the competition IMO, can not afford Lyons in from the start. Plus please do not consider Jack Gunston Fages.

Out- Jarryd Lyons.

In- Lincoln McCarthy.

Sub from- Lohmann, Lyons, Prior, Sharp.
I know we diverge on what Lyons can bring to the team and there is no doubt McCarthy must come back in, but I would bring him in at the expense of Lohmann. A few here have said it, but Lyons offers greater ‘insurance’ value, should a key mid go down. I am yet to see what Lohmann brings in the Seniors. Based on his performances in the senior side, Lohmann is yet to achieve Jack Dyer’s benchmark as a ‘good ordinary footballer’. Conversely, Lyons is an elite ball user by hand and he is a fantastic tackler. Comments by briztoon in relation to Lyons fitness do worry me though. Fagan is in the best position to judge, but Lyons might just be a perfect selection as SUB.

Expecting Zorks to have a huge Finals series.

No-one executes a flat precision foot pass better than him.

Still a star.

Absolutely agree and well said luthor. Against Collingwood and again against St.Kilda, Zorko’s aggressive field kicking has been great, especially when switching into the corridor or picking out a teammate to create the overlap. He has opened sides right up.

The Saints can shut you down more easily if you rely on space in the forward line (like most leading key forwards for example).

GWS's key forwards are below average at best so score most of their goals from broken play in the forward line or midfielders running into the forward 50, so they're not quite a horror matchup for the Saints but they're definitely not a good one.

I'd have the Saints probably beating the Blues if they'd ended up with that matchup someone.

A reminder for how finals work

View attachment 1788026

I was looking at that and thinking ok so we play against the loser of the Pies/Demons game vs the winner of the Blues/Swans match then had to stop and remember that we have to beat Port first!!!!

One week at a time ... no assumptions ... don't spend the ball before you take possession etc etc etc

The midfield is obviously Port's strength, but I do think we have the players to shut down a Rozee, Butters, SPP if they get off the chain, anyone of Berry, Dunkley or Robertson could be called on to do the job.

Is it just my perception or does Powell-Pepper always play well against us?

I was thinking that.

I never knew who he was the first time I saw him play against us and he looked like Leigh Matthews running from the M/F to the forward half and booting miracle goals.

I'd give Dev a run with role on ball again, with either Butters or Rozee the likely candidates; Think he has the athleticism to go with them a bit more & I thought he actually did alright against Sinclair on the weekend, playing that role as a tagging HFFer.

Stats say Sinclair had 30 disposals for the game, but when your opponent gives you 18 chances to get a cheapie kicking in it's not hard to rack 'em up. I thought in general play he didn't have much influence at all.

McCarthy for Lohmann with Lyons as the sub works for me.

If we play Melbourne, I could see the logic in having Fort as the sub.

Na Grundy is not playing, Gawn has been patchy since the game against up. Oscar can break even. We need cover for the midfield and outside run.

I think Lyons taking Dunkleys defensive role allowing him to play more attacking in the last is probably our best hope.

Would also consider Matho. Apart from that I don't see any likely to have much of an impact

Accept Lyons doesn’t run both ways, is slow and doesn’t have a defensive mindset.

Port will go into this game reasonably confident after the thrashing they gave us in round 1.
Even though that was a long time ago it is still relevant in their minds confidence wise anyhow.

On the other hand, we will be out for redemption so should be up for the challenge from the start.
The bulk of our team have been together since 2019 and now have quite a bit of finals experience.

Looking forward to attending the game especially now that it is a night game.

The more I watch Dev play the more I think his future lies in a role as a defensive tagger.

You always need one in your team.

I think this will be a big game for our midfield depth. Drew could go to Neale and Dunkley to Butters.

Need the second stringers to match up well with Ports midfield depth

Berry really seems to have step up the past 3 weeks. Probably the best run of form in his career so far. He’ll need to continue.

He does at clearances though. It’s just as soon as it gets to the outside he’s in trouble.

Releasing Dunkley would allow us to get it to going forward and hopefully minimise any damage Lyons lack of run could contribute to

One of the biggest bonuses for us COULD be Port's defence. On a points conceded basis it is the 12th best defence in the league. So a very different proposition to the strangling saints.

They do have the second best attack on points (behind us) but it will be interesting to see how fit Dixon and Marshall are as neither played v Richmond, and Dixon has been out for a while.

So to come a to a really original conclusion... all over to the mids. And they have a bloody good and pacey midfield. So we have to be absolutely ON in the midfield and accountable right across the board.

I think the biggest bonus to Port's defence is it SHOULD mean we don't get a repeat of say Saints in round 24 / crows round 11 / dogs semi final 2021 / giants semi final 2019 - dominate general play and inside 50s but either lose or struggle to win. I am just going to assume last week's goal-kicking was an abberation.

Would love to see us fly out of the blocks and get the crowd humming this week. Been a while since that has happened. On tv it seemed like the crowd has been quite anxious the past 2 matches. Maybe the finals finally starting after a lot of ladder watching will be just what we need.

Flights too expensive for me sadly. Hoping to make the prelim.
