What do we think?

Cowan has to go, surely. Also not sure if Starc will make the cut. Agar will hold his place, fantastic debut.

1. Watson
2. Rogers
3. Khawaja
4. Hughes
5. Clarke
6. Smith
7. Haddin
8. Agar
9. Siddle
10. Starc
11. Pattinson

With how shaky our batting is, we need to bat as deep as possible. For this reason, Bird misses out and Starc stays in.

can't see cowan holding his place.

think usman will come in, but i'm with allan border. hughes will probably move to 3.

as for the bowlers will depend on the wicket. starc is just so hard to guage. he might come out, take 4 or 5 wickets and roll through them. or he might dish up rubbish.

pattinson, siddle and agar won't be going anywhere.

you could make cases for all of bird, harris and starc. i'm not really sure at this moment.

one other thing to note with starc, he came out for the fourth day looking very very very stiff. and that's not the first time that has happened to him. that can't happen regularly if you're going to be a good test match bowler.

Can anyone more clued up than me let me know if you have to pick from within the travelling party?

Would like to see D Hussey in. Too many damn openers.

Exactly this line-up.

Dave Hussey has had very lean first class stats of late, ave of about 12 last season. Don't want.

IN - Khawaja, OUT - Cowan. Top order looks a shambles at times, but it looks like our bowlers can take the 20 wickets needed to win a match.

Cowan out forever... in Usman I guess.. not real happy about that... no comeback for Mike Hussey?? would be nice to have some actual middle order batsman playing in the middle order.

I would like either Harris or Bird in but not sure who could come out.... maybe Starc... but at times looked real dangerous, other times dished up plop.... if I trusted Harris's fitness ore Id have no doubts of him coming in.

they don't have to pick from within the travelling party, as in there are no rules explicitly stating they do.

but in the past selections from outside having only ever been done in case of injury - sean young played a test in 1997.

unfortunately dhusseys time has passed mate. despite an obvious weakness against shorter bowling, he could consider himself unlucky not have been a crack given the state of our batting in recent years.

I don't get the hate some have for Cowan, but agree he should go. The problem is, there is only Khawaja or Wade to come in for him. Neither give me any more confidence. I would seriously consider keeping Cowan, due to the lack of options, opening with him and having Rogers at three. The idea of Watson and Cowan running together fills me with dread though.

Khawaja therefore comes in, but I can't build an order.

Watson (only just, has been easily the worst performed batsman over a long period; including as opener; and I would not have included him at Nottingham but did enough to survive a couple of games)
Rogers
Khawaja (really, with less confidence than Cowan)
Clarke
Smith
Hughes (batted well with the tail, Agar anyway as the others didn't hang around; its not a demotion to six but recognising an apparent strength; or could be swapped with Khawaja - Swann will probably be on early again, so six is no more likely than 3 or 4 to face him early)
Haddin
Pattinson
Siddle
Agar
Harris

Clarke should go back to 5. Its where his record is best, and his game is best suited. Why stuff around with the one batsman who is on song?
Order I'd go:
Watson
Rogers
Hughes
Khawaja
Clarke
Smith
Haddin
Agar
Pattinson
Starc/Harris
Siddle

No changes

Cowan had a bad test, but was our second best bat in our most recent series (short memories it seems) Starc should be given another shot at it even though I would have preferred Bird or Harris.

This its all a crap shoot anyways, that loss hurts and makes it awful hard to win the Ashes back.

I'm tempted to leave Cowan, simply because I have no faith in Khawaja and think Cowan is a better player than he has showed this match.

Usually swing is more important than the pitch at Lord's so I'm tempted to leave Starc in, despite how unreliable he is. I just have this horrible feeling that Bird will look utterly incapable of taking wickets.

TBH I don't think there is a lot wrong with the XI we had in this match, in terms of picking our best side. We just need a few things to click.

1. Watson

5. Khawaja or Warner
6. Smith
7. Haddin
8. Agar
9. Pattinson
10. Starc
11. Siddle

Cowan for Khawaja, although in saying this when was the last time Khawaja played out in the middle? Although very inconsistent I reckon we need to leave Starc in, he has that x-factor that our bowling needs. If Watson doesn't pull up then I guess we are forced to open with Cowan but would prefer this not to be the case. Also would prefer Hughes up the top of the order with Steve Smith to stick it out with the tail. Also if Watson doesn't pull up it would'nt surprise me if they played Wade as a batsman which would be a disaster.

So this is what the lineup should be: Watson, Rogers, Hughes, Khawaja, Clarke, Smith, Haddin, Agar, Pattinson, Siddle, Starc

If there was to be another Ashton Agar like surprise this series then I would back Joe Burns to be an outsider as he would know Boof from queensland and he is over in England at the moment.

Khawaja was playing practice matches last week

Out Cowan just for his brain fades. He started the mini collapse in the second innings with his stupidity playing a shot that he should never have in the last over before tea on the 4th day.
