I believe we need to run hard and move the ball quickly, we need to ensure that the Hawks work real hard across the ground for the first 3 quarters as I don't believe they are up to it in the 4th quarter. They also rely on too few in the middle.

They have a height-challenged defence so I believe it's a real possibility that Silvagni gets a run this weekend. He is good on the lead with good hands and big enough body to cause problems for the Hawks with Pav and Clarke/Sandi down there as well.

Same. It just needs to be someone that can either come on and have an impact or fill a role to release someone else to have an impact. Not sure Roberton really did either last week.

I'm glad he got rewarded for great WAFL form, just don't think Roberton is what we need right now sub or otherwise as he really doesn't own any position or role and his slow loopy kicking isn't useful. Spurr can fulfill the McPhee role, which really opens the door for Silvagni - if he doesn't get the call up following an injury to a tall(ish) back, not sure when he will. He deserves a shot at some stage.

Other than that, feel like we need to inject some more energy and run around the ground but Lower, Walters and Mora would all be a week or more away.

If it wasn't the Hawks in Tassie would be a great game to inject Sutcliffe/Sheridan, Crozier or Menagola but have a (somewhat horrible) feeling we might end up with JVB.

The problem with the play Silvagni brigade and I am one of them, is our view is based on his return from injury form last year.

There's no doubt he was sensational and took some big scalps in Brown and Franklin ; he looked like he hadn't missed a single training session or game.
But, that was last year.

I have no doubt that Ross would have at least watched tapes of Alex's games and have a good feel of what he did last year. But........
that does not translate to this year. A lot of things can change in a pre-season.
Fitness , attitude, endeavour to name a few.

Indeed, the person who stands to lose most by not playing the best candidate is Ross Lyon. Therefore if it's Ross' assessment that Alex doesn't provide the best option for Freo, then I'll accept that.
Not too philosophical, but, if he gets a game , he gets a game, if he doesn't , for whatever reason, tough luck.

There is also a lot to be said for the old 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' mentality. Dawson and McPharlin have been doing the job. As a unit our back 6 have been very solid and covering for each other like never before.

I rate Silvagni; another KP defender is hardly what we need right now though.

I agree, which is why I would actually bring Silvagni in and play him out of the goal square.

However, I trust that Lyon knows his strengths and if he can't apply pressure then he won't be in the side. To be the Hawks we need to be in their face.

Just had a quick read of the Hawks board and to most of them this game is a non-contest. Hawks to win easily, bank the 4 points and move on. I think that they are stuck in 2011 when our form was poor due to injuries and such. No respect for Sandilands at all which was suprising given how he dominates games.

Some may say that but I wouldn't say that it is the consensus. I personally think it will be a hard match and whilst I think Hawthorn will win if they put in a decent effort, it is in no way going to be as one-sided as the bookies think. There is nothing in the AFL more overated than Hawthorn's form in Launceston (i.e Sydney this year). Would much rather have the game at the G but there isn't much we can do about it. If Gibbo and Hodge come in it will defineately give us the edge. I would say Hodge won't play but Gibbo will be back
How are the injuries for you guys?
I heard Pav might be out. any truth to this ?

Would love to see it tried at least once. We never replaced JA (not that he was acting particularly tall) and I felt this really affected our structure against GC. It was hard to tell whether our forward line looked better vs Port because A) Pav resembled a marking forward for the first time this year; (B) the knee-knock forced him to stay closer to goal; or (C) because we were playing Port. In reality I think it was a bit of all 3.

Silvagni playing the role Jack and Kep failed to nail gives the team a heap of flexibility if Macca needs to be thrown forward. Makes me annoyed each week when Dawson appears inside fwd 50 - if that is happening, clearly the coaches think there's an issue up there structurally or they've found a mismatch they can exploit. But without a doubt Zac D is not the answer they should come up with.

Hawks fans always think like that - most misplaced arrogance of any fans in the league.

They've got some exciting players to watch and should be a likeable team on paper, but they're the only club besides the ducks I always barrack against just to see their fans get what they deserve.

Good to hear Caty getting in the mood of indigenous round

MJ's been on a high. Love it! Don't let KPR see that vid though.

That handballing drill with the band around the arms is an interesting one, must be to practice getting the handball away while you're being tackled. They think of everything these days.

If we continue to kick a thousand behinds per game you are a red hot chance, particularly if we kick badly early...

Tough ground as the weather gets colder, windy Launceston + Ross Lyon... don't be expecting a spectacle.

We do that too!

My prediction for Saturday is Freo by 4 points.
Hawks: 7.23.65
Dockers: 8.21.69

To be fair to Hawthorn supporters, it isn't unreasonable for them to think this should be an easy game. Let's hope the players think the same way.

If Hawthorn have any ambitions of winning the flag, they can completely forget about that if they lose to us over there.

Having said that, I think we have a small chance. We seem to match up OK with the Hawks, a few prime movers like Sewell, Mitchell, Lewis, Hodge, Burgoyne are not that quick ... so some of our guys like Mundy, Barlow, etc. should not get exposed for pace. We can dominate in the ruck. Plus we have a decent defence to hold Buddy/Roughead.

My main concern is Rioli, and I wouldn't be surprised if some other small like Breust decided to play their game of the year and kick a bag. Also need to clamp down on Suckling/Guerra/Birchall coming off half back. Hopefully Lyon can come up with something to stifle them.

I'm expecting a loss in an ugly spectacle ... maybe something like 70-50 ... but have hope we can cause an upset if a few things go our way.

HAHAHA... that'll be great to watch...

We were 11.22.88 at one stage on Friday... on a good night for footy.. don't think I have ever seen that!!

I remember a Sydney game in early 00's, at the SCG where they were something like 4.21 before finishing with a flurry of goals to make it 12.22 or something like that. BTW, don't come crying here about poor conversion of chances, we FINISHED the game against the Lions 8.16, and they were trapping the ball in our fwd 50 for us.

EDIT: BTW, I've got no problem either with Hawks fans thinking they're a sure thing in this game, they should be confident. If we win it will upset of the season so far with ease AFAIC.

Thats the way I see it, too...

I'm sure your last away game would be in the memory of most people, it wasn't exactly inspiring.

It's not just this game with them though. They're consistently the most arrogant supporter base in the league (on bigfooty anyway). And considering my natural inbuilt bias against the ducks from across the river (who are pretty bad at the best of times) that says something.

Probably the most satisfying win in our history was the 2010 final after a week of disrespect where they were already talking about booking seats for the next round on their board. Before an away final at our home ground... when we finished above them!
