I'm all for Rioli building up form and fitness in the WAFL. These little injuries he's picking up are a little concerning, however I don't doubt that we'll see him playing seniors before too long.

For mine, Karpany really should be playing that HFF role ahead of Masten. Where's he at? Haven't heard much about him over the off season.

Karpany is in a familiar place. It's definitively shite and can't get enough of the ball.

Redden was second last for meters gained (70m from 18 disposals). In contrast Yeo, Sheed, Hurn, Shuey and Jetta all gained over or close to 500m.
When its your job to scrap for the ball and get a handball out of the contest not necessarily forward either its hard to get a lot of meters

It is still a pretty low number, isn’t it? For example, the lowest ranked Sydney midfielder for meters gained is Josh Kennedy with 221 meters which is more than 3 times what Redden gained.

We dont need schofield either . Too tall down back .
Bring in another mid against the dogs
Ainsworth with 26 touches and 5 tackles for EP

Where did you get those tackle stats? WAFL says 0. I'd be much happier if he had 5 as that would round out his game nicely from a statistical point of view.

Apparently better than you.

Do you realise that the teams that have won the last two cups, did so on the back of tackles and contested possession?

Disposal is more than just the odd bullet kick into Fwd 50 by the way. He's not penetrating, his vision is lacking and he's a horrifically bad handballer, likes to give it to someone standing 1m away who's flat footed.

He's not a good link up player because he will generally, stop, prop, turn back into traffic before realising he's killed momentum and then look for an easy outlet. He simply can't make decisions quick enough for the modern game and he isn't athletic enough to compensate for it. There's no reason for him to be in the side, none whatsoever.
And you think Hutchings doesn't kill plays? Both with poor disposal as well as horrendous decision making?

Who exactly are we choosing to play this high half forward role?

I personally liked Karpany's skill set for the role but his application was missing and he seems to have fallen by the wayside, Rioli could definitely do it except he isn't fit enough. Venables is another option but he was already in the team.

I just don't get the argument that we've picked him above someone clearly more suited to the role.

The role is the important part here, not whether he's our best football player.

Agree completely on Karpany, would be far better suited to the role and I don't understand why he hasn't been given an extended run considering our lack of options.

Hutchings provides far more flexibility and the ability to at least make a strong tackle, or go sit on a player as a run with, two things Masten can't do. Picking a shit player, just because he suits a role, doesn't excuse the fact that he's still a shit player.

Hope that we give Brander a run if his WAFL form warrants it, we need a player of his height in the forward line in JK's absence (the ruckmen don't really count since each of them are only there sporadically). I feel like we already decided on Waterman as the replacement for JK a long time ago, and we haven't really given Brander and Mallen a genuine chance at that spot. Perhaps we could have even considered trialling Brander at FF and Waterman or Mallen as a 3rd tall. I know that Brander is in his 1st season and key position players have a reputation somewhat as slow developers, but as our 1st pick, I thought that he would've been given more of an opportunity. Unless there are flaws that the selectors think that he has, apart from being too young/inexperienced as a key position player.

Brander is every bit as athletic and talented as Mitch Brown when he debuted R1 against Sydney in 2007 - Back him in!

Out: Schofield, Masten & Nelson
In: Ainsworth, Cole & Watson

Would make us very young and inexperienced. Understand where you are coming from but.................cannot see it happening.

Not convinced Watson is ready yet - a little too flaky yet for my liking.

With the tag job Hutchings did on JJ last year i would bring him in. Stop JJ and they are pretty much useless around the ground.

In: Hutchings , Cole, Ainsworth
Out: Masten, Schofield, Nelson

Shep Barrass Hurn
Jetta Gov Duggan

Ainsworth Sheed Gaff

Cripps Waterman Venables
Ryan Darling Lecra

Ruck: Nic Nat Shuey Yeo

Bench: Lycett Redden Hutchings Cole

- They might bring in a few extra talls so dropping Schoey might be risky but with it being a fast deck id rather we went smaller and use Cole in his place. Shep, Barrass and Gov should be plenty of cover for their talls.

- Masten wasn't terrible but figured we should reward Ainsworth for his pre-season and give him a crack on the wing.

- Duggan & Jetta to stay back and give us some drive off HB.

- Yeo to go head to head with Bont.

- Give Redden some serious minutes in the midfield on not on the wing like last week. He is wasted on a wing and plays so much better in the guts.

- Hutchings to wear JJ like a glove.

Sounds perfect. Get it done Simmo.

Out: Masten, Schofield
In: Hutchings, Cole

Hutchings in will let Simpson have a freer hand to use Yeo defensively if required. I back the Hurn/Shepp/Yeo triumvirate to do a job against any 3rd tall type the Dogs try and employ.

Revised changes:

I think we had 1 defender too many and Masten was still fine.

IN: Cole, Hutchings
OUT: Nelson, Schofield

Hurn Barrass Cole
Duggan Gov Shep
Jetta Sheed Gaff
Masten Waterman Cripps
Ryan Darling LeCras

Naitanui Shuey Yeo

Venables, Redden, Lycett, Hutchings

Duggan to stay back but Jetta and Yeo to spend time mid/back
