I can't see a thread, but merge if there is!

I suppose it all depends on suspensions and injuries this week.

If Scarlo is injuried:
IN: Hawkins
OUT: Scarlo
and Lonergon can go back.

If Scarlo isnt injured, and Rooke is suspended:
IN: Hawkins
OUT: Rooke
We wont be too tall I don't think. Two of Mooney/Hawkins/Lonergon up forward with on the bench plus one of Ottens/Blake and two smalls.

If Mackie is suspended, is DJ fit to come back?

If Scarlett is injured or not 100% id like to see ladier (if think his name is spelt like that) I think if some1 like him is injured we need to bleed in young players, cos there our future..

Mackie wont have to worry nor will Rooke.

Lonergan out and Hawkins in. If Scarlett injured then i reckon we put Ladier in or Lonergan down back.

Would love to see Djekurra come in...hardness and forward pressure in the forward line would be good. Varcoe doesnt have the pjhysical presence of Djekkura

Scarlett should not be played if there is any doubt whatsoever. He is our most structurally important player along with Ottens. That allows Lonergan to go back and Hawkins to come in.

Of the others, Mackie will get points, but shouldn't get any games.

Rooke should be OK.

Haven't seen the SJ incident. If he is to go, I'd like to see Hogan get a run.

According to the sunday footy show Scarlett will be right to play. If the reports are thrown out, i'd leave the side the same. Give Hawkins another game in the Vfl and Lonergan another chance.

Hawkins is better coming in against Richmond than he was against the hard playing Hawks. I think Bomber did the right thing leaving him out fri night and putting in a more experienced team.

Lonergan is on shakey ground. Did anyone see that cut back to Bomber after he missed an easy goal. Bomber was seething.

I hope Hawkins gets a run this week. A weaker opposition & at home, better game to bring him in.

Byrnes/varcoe/Djerrkura/Hogan will all be looked at again I am sure for this next week

Just have to wait and see how reports/injuries go.

If the reason Lonergan is going to be dropped is for a missed goal, then all the other forwards will need to be dropped too.

Bomber was probably seething because - 'another f#$%ing missed goal'

It's not surprising that they've said that.

Rolled ankles are bastards though. They really do need rest to get back to normal. If you're playing with a bad ankle it can develop into other problems both in the ankle and other parts of the lower leg. Best just to give it the rest it needs now.

If he needs a jab to get through, he shouldn't be playing.

The way Bomber was talking before Round 1 about Hawkins, I would have bet anything that he was going to play against Hawthorn. He said something like:

"We couldn't be happier with him (Hawkins) over the preseason. He has done everything right. We were really happy with the way he played in the NAB Cup final against Collingwood"

After 5 goals in the VFL, I'd be very, very surprised if he didn't now get a gig against Richmond.

Yep.

Probably just wanted to give him one more run around in a practice match before putting him in for an AFL match, as he hadn't played much during the pre-season.

Lonergan was poor so the swap should be made.

Can we drop Stokes? He just doesn't do enough. Has he heard about front and square? Or does he think it is some obscure mathematical concept??

I'd like to see Djerkurra given a game in his spot. OUT Stokes - IN Djerkurra

Also, the time has come: OUT - Lonergan, IN - Hawkins

The cats need to use as many games as possible to get experience into Hogan and others. This weekend is a game they can afford to include some youngsters. OUT: Kelly IN Hogan

Also, what about trying a different ruckman? OUT Blake - IN Mumford

*shakes head*

Change for change's sake isn't going to take us anywhere.

Djerrkura will need to do a helluva lot more before he gets a senior game. The predictions of a handful of AFL games this season from some are fanciful with the current level of output he is producing.

Stokes was quiet on Friday night and I agree, he needs to work harder to get to the right spots. BUT, he had a brilliant NAB Cup and deserves more than one game to prove himself.

Kelly was pretty good against Hawthorn. Played a bit down back which we need with Hunt gone and while Harley is unavailable. Hogan will get a go soon, but no need to change for the sake of it.

Blake had a good game for a 2nd ruckman. Even kicked a goal. No change required when Ottens is in such great form and West is not pressing (remember, Mumford is still a rookie).

The only one you're close on is Hawkins for Lonergan but I'd prefer to see Scarlett have a rest and Lonergan go back to defence.

Catempire - OK my changes are not realistic but you forget one thing: players like Stokes and Kelly had many games in which to develop. We will need to similarly develop other young players for the future. If this is not done now we risk falling in a big hole down the track if there are injuries/retirements

I agree; we need to bring the next crop through. There will be opportunities to do so. I'd like to see us get the season off to a good start, then start experimenting a bit if we have the luxury of doing so.

Yeah, fair enough :thumbsu:

I reckon Bomber needs to light a fire under a couple of blokes at some stage, though. Stokes is one of those players who needs to feel that his spot in the side is not secure to bring out his best. He is taking things far too casually at present

Yeah, you might be right.

In the NAB Cup I was thinking, awesome, he's back. But he left me flat again on Friday night.

He certainly will need to find form again quickly because he used up most of his brownie points on that day that shall not be mentioned.

When discussing who should be promoted and who should be dropped/rested, performances over the past season or two count. You either earn the right to play in the seniors or a young player exhibits so much raw skill the upside of playing them is worth the risk.

You drop a player when they under perform for a few matches in a row and you have decent replacement available. The aim is to put the best team on the park on the day that will give you the best chance to win.

Given this - Hawkins has to get the the nod ahead of Lonergan. It is a shame Mumford is a rookie as he could have been a possible inclusion down back if Scarlett is out. So it is likely Lonergan will get the nod for the extra tall we need down back this week.

However you still need to be able to take the occasional mark down back - when you have better position than the forward you are on. And this is what Lonergan does not appear to be able to do. Take a strong grab.

A tall player (except some specialist tap ruckman) with out good hands is like a an octopus without tentacles. Dead in the water.

Secondly Stokes has been good for two years now - and has deserved his spot in that time. Everyone's position should be considered and assessed regularly - but I believe Stokes has earned the right to keep his position so far. He is a better small forward than Varcoe at this stage.

His poor GF performance was as much about poor team tactics as it was about his poor play on the day. Rooke was the man for Hodge that day.

I would not be suprised if Hawkins plays well in the seniors that Stoke's performances will improve. Hawkins seems to me will bring the ball to ground more often that Lonergan, creating more opportunities, you would think, for our smaller forwards.

Watching the games over the weekend I also would like to see a more mobile second ruckman - though Blake's performance was ok. He just needs to be more of a long target and marking option given his height and position. A more mobile, around the ground ruckman maybe more valuable to Geelong (if we had one of course) - just having one more link player coming out of defence or to drift forward on occasions - could prove quite effective. King for the Saints plays more of this type of role than Blake does for the Cats.

Did you smoke some wacky tobacco or sniff some glue on the weekend ?
You think Stokes,Kelly and Blake should be dropped and you think Bartel is over-rated

You make della seem normal.
