The thing is with most, if not all of these players is that there averages in shield aren't great.

You look at youth: Handscomb (38), Whiteman (34), Patterson (42), Harris (31), Stoinis (37), Maxwell (41), Maddinson (37), Bancroft ( 37).

Out of that group I would probably go with Handscomb and Patterson as I think they are the most talented.

And the older guys mentioned: White (40), Klinger (40), Bailey (39).

Imo you should have to have an average of at least 45 pushing on 50 to get a game, but changes need to be made so the selectors have to figure out who it is that there going to play.

A lot of younger player's averages are low due to the fact that, as identified talents, they played a lot of first class games before they were ready, leading their career averages to be low. You're much better to look at their averages over the past 3 seasons to get a better idea of how they're actually playing.

I wish they'd persist with Maxwell. His technique is a bit of a mess but he's probably the most talented batsman we have.

I dont care if he is a tosser or not, get him in the team at 6

The team is crying out for a No 6 who can knuckle down and eschew the flashy shot. Maxwell just can't help himself.

I'm predicting one change - Voges out and Handscombe in.

Personally I'd add Ferguson, Mennie, Nevill and Lyon to the outs but they won't make 5 changes. It runs deeper than the XI though. The more important outs are Lehmann, Sutherland, Howard and Marsh. There is a God-awful stink about this Australian team and it starts all the way up at the top.

Why can't the No.5 or even No.7 do that.An attacking batsman who gets results is worth the risk with Maxwell.Remember how Gilchrist batted even when the top order failed.

Lol this isn't the Brisbane Lions, we aren't making more than a couple of changes to a Test side? What is the most changes we have made in recent times to a team?
After the homework test maybe?

White at 6.

1. He's the most in form middle order batsman in the country.
2. He's an experienced cricket brain that can support Smith.

The best young talent in the country at 5.
The best rock in the country to open with Warner.

I guess the difference is that Gilchrist just played really good cricket shots really well. Maxwell is perceived to invent shots, lose patience, get funky. That's the perception. Of course, Maxwell's record in First Class cricket is better than most of the guys who have had their name thrown about and he adds the option of being a handy bowler. They don't need an all-rounder, just a batsman who can offer something with the ball when needed. The bloke the team is screaming out for now if 100% fit is James Faulkner.

1. Bancroft- Warner has batted his best with Rogers, we need a guy at the other end who at least will see the new ball off. Gun short leg fielder too.
2. Warner- picks himself
3. Khawaja- but needs to stop getting out after getting starts, 3 scores between 50 and 100 isn't good enough.
4. Smith- yep.
5. Handscomb- it's time, and with one eye to the Indian series, he's our best player of spin in the country.
6. Patterson- time to get a bit of youth in, he has the technique and temperament.
7. Nevill- well lets cut to the chase the other options aren't great.
8. Starc- picks himself
9. Hazelwood- picks himself
10. Sayers- I'd give him a crack on his home ground.
11. Lyon - ONE last chance.

Handscomb for me is a straight swap for Voges.

I'm being a bit out there with Weatherald, but if he posts another score against Qld this weekend then stuff conservatism go with him. We need to pick batsmen who we think could average 45+ in test cricket, I just don't see it with your other options

Patterson - Fighting with Handscomb for the Voges spot.
Handscomb - batting has improved enormously since dumping the gloves and ready for Voges spot.

Head - FC average of 33, with only 3 centuries, sorry but just not good enough for test level.
Maddison - good FC player but as we've seen with others the step up to test is enormous and not sure he has the right temperament.
Bancroft - out of form. Also only 16 scores of 50+ from 79 innings at FC level does concern me.

Bancroft hasn't had a great start to the season....but has been solid the last 2 summers. Sometimes, in these situations, you need to pick a player based on temperament. In that case I reckon Bancroft is worth giving a go.

OUT: campaigners that "always play their natural game" regardless of the situation
OUT: Lehman - for coaching batsmen to "always play their natural game"
OUT: Pearce

IN: campaigners that can play defensively with sound technique when the situation demands it. But they probably don't exist in this current generation of players.
IN: A new coach

We could select 2 batsmen if 45-50 was the benchmark. This was the benchmark of 10 years ago when the shield was a decent competition.

In Patterson, Hanscomb and Marsh

Out Burns, Ferguson, Voges

Got to give Ferguson at least 1-2 more tests. He's better than what he showed in this test; I would imagine he would have been pretty nervous after having waited that long.

So difficult to get a young player in. So many planets need to align. So many variables with the timing of matches.

There needs to be a test match on

There is a form/injury vacancy

The vacancy is in the exact role the young player plays

The young player is fit and healthy themselves

There have been Shield games for him to play in the lead up

He has been making runs during this time

It's almost impossible to get everything lined up in fact.

He'll be more nervous now. Think he's blown his chance unfortunately:(

Ferguson is a reptile. Shouldn't have been anywhere near the test team... Ever!

Not sure we can pass judgement on Maxwell in regards to inventing shots losing patience etc in test cricket with the low number of test matches he has played and I would think nearly all in Sri Lanka,India.
