Ok so the series is lost, what do we do now for the 3rd Test.

In two tests so far we have had 3 spectacular batting collapses.
1st Innings Perth - 10/86
1st innings Hobart - all out 85
2nd innings Hobart - 7/22 (8/32)

This says our middle order is pathetic and needs a clean out.

My side for 3rd test if Shaun Marsh is fit.

Warner
S. Marsh
Khawaja
Smith
Weatherald - Voges has to go and better to blood a young player than older.
Handscomb - don't like the all-rounder position if you don't have one so give it to a batsman.
Wade - Nevill's keeping hasn't been brilliant, his hesitation to be involved in DRS calls is worrying and his batting pathetic. Wade would make up for keeping with his batting and the additional leadership in the group as Smith is really struggling there.
O'Keefe - Lyon is bowling tripe, was way to short here, little wonder Smith has lost faith. SOK will get nod over the others.
Starc
Siddle - should be fit and given Mennie was ordinary easy selection.
Hazelwood

If Marsh is unfit
Warner
Weatherald
Khawaja
Smith
Handscomb
?? - draw out of a hat? - I'd go with White or Bailey.
Wade
O'Keefe
Starc
Siddle
Hazelwood

An alternative the selectors might do given past history.

Bat Wade at 6, bring back in Mitch Marsh, which would mean probably Weatherald would miss out, shame because I'd love to see the selectors stick their neck out with this kid.

Even with these selectors I really can't see Voges or Ferguson being in the squad for Brisbane and Nevill should be dropped (might be saved by the colour of his state cap) as we need to drastically improve our middle or grit which Wade has shown he has.

Weatherald's gonna be a jet but I'm not sure they'd go with him yet, more likely to look for bats from the experience line of Head/Handscomb/Patterson/Maddinson/Bancroft. i mean yeah Weatherald is older than the fresher faces like Renshaw and Heazlett but another full season would be ideal.

Voges gone, Nathan Lyon gone, Joe Mennie gone.

Ins: S Marsh/Maxwell, Bird, Siddle/O'Keefe

I could almost see us going with Agar and using maxwell at 6 to bowl right arm spin. An upgrade on Voges.

Handscomb for me is a straight swap for Voges.

I'm being a bit out there with Weatherald, but if he posts another score against Qld this weekend then stuff conservatism go with him. We need to pick batsmen who we think could average 45+ in test cricket, I just don't see it with your other options

Patterson - Fighting with Handscomb for the Voges spot.
Handscomb - batting has improved enormously since dumping the gloves and ready for Voges spot.

Head - FC average of 33, with only 3 centuries, sorry but just not good enough for test level.
Maddison - good FC player but as we've seen with others the step up to test is enormous and not sure he has the right temperament.
Bancroft - out of form. Also only 16 scores of 50+ from 79 innings at FC level does concern me.

Honestly I don't think we will make a great deal of changes. I think Bird in for Mennie is a must and while Voges, Burns and Ferguson are all under the pump, the latter two have just come back in and Voges I think will be lucky enough to get one more chance. Neville is the other guy that just needs to make some runs.

This is the side I'd be going with though

Warner
Burns (unless Marsh is fit)
Khawaja
Smith
Handscomb (Should have come in instead of Ferguson to start with, especially with Pakistan up next and a tour of Sri Lanka on the horizion)
Ferguson (Patterson ready to take his spot if he produces another game like that)
Wade (Average keeper but we are desperate for someone that can fight out an innings and he has proven he can do that)
Starc
Hazlewood
Lyon (lucky)
Bird

Head was Sheffield Shield player of the season last season. Try looking at more than stats or at least apply some knowledge to them.

I wish they'd persist with Maxwell. His technique is a bit of a mess but he's probably the most talented batsman we have.

I dont care if he is a tosser or not, get him in the team at 6

In.Handscomb,Maxwell,Wade,Siddle and O'Keefe. Out Ferguson,Voges,Nevill,Lyon and Mennie.

Burns would be very lucky to stay in perhaps but is 6 changes to many?Maddinson and Sayers I would seriously consider to.

Should be:

Bancroft
Warner
Khawaja
Smith
Patterson
Handscomb
Wade
Starc
Lyon
Hazlewood
Bird

Will be:

Burns
Warner
Khawaja
Smith
Voges
Ferguson
Nevill
Starc
Mennie
Lyon
Hazlewood

I'll give Burns another shot if Marsh isn't fit. Voges and Nevill are the must be omitted for me. Nevill looks like a number 8 bat no adaptability whatsoever.

White should be getting a look in too but he's papers have been stamped.

The thing is with most, if not all of these players is that there averages in shield aren't great.

You look at youth: Handscomb (38), Whiteman (34), Patterson (42), Harris (31), Stoinis (37), Maxwell (41), Maddinson (37), Bancroft ( 37).

Out of that group I would probably go with Handscomb and Patterson as I think they are the most talented.

And the older guys mentioned: White (40), Klinger (40), Bailey (39).

Imo you should have to have an average of at least 45 pushing on 50 to get a game, but changes need to be made so the selectors have to figure out who it is that there going to play.
