How the hell does Maddinson name even get mentioned. Ave is only 35 and is more a one day player.it is why some people say there is a bias towards nsw players when his name should not even be considered for the test team.

A big no to Dean for me, before this match he couldn't buy a run.
My team: Warner, Renshaw, Khawaja, Smith, Handscome, M.Marsh/Head, Nevill, Mennie, Starc, Hazlewood, Lyon/Zampa

Reasons:
Warner for obvious reasons
Renshaw is a gun in the Alistair Cook mould
Khawaja looks like our best number 3 since Ponting
Smith: Same as Warner
Handscome: Banging the door down, deserves chace
M.Marsh: Looked like he was starting to bat well just when he got dropped, keep going imo.
Head: Bit of a potential pick, but he looks to be a test player in the future. Has had a few good FC seasons.
Nevill: Best wicketkeeper in the country, can't afford to have Wade continually drop catches. Whiteman will replace him in the future.
Mennie: Only 1 test, didn't disgrace himself, l reckon they will give him another shot.
Starc and Hazlewood: obvious reasons.
Lyon: fast losing patience with him but he is our most experienced spinner.
Zampa: Not sure, looks better in ODI when players have to attack him. Don't know who else to pick.

We tried picking Marsh on potential and he wasn't up to it, he needs time at FC level. Same thing would go for Head, he's a long way behind a lot more f other guys IMO.

The difference is Head was named Sheffield Shield Player of the season last season. Played very well in England when he went over there as well. He may be behind some older layers but we can't be picking these veterans anymore as it isn't working.

Marsh/Head gives us another option with the ball.

Burns was a possibility to be given one more chance, given the lack of realistic options and the fact that SMarsh will be back for the Pakistan series. Would have to think he's done his dash now. If Renshaw goes big again, he's a possibility for one Test, with selectors letting him know he will make way for SMarsh but this is a chance to keep his name in front of selectors. Otherwise, Khawaja opens for one Test...Warner, Khawaja, Smith, Handscomb, Ferguson and Patterson.

Two centuries from Renshaw puts his name on the shortlist.

Although probably still unlikely he gets a go yet.

I'll admit I'm not 100% around the form of all shield players but before this game I don't recall his name getting thrown up too much. Moreso Bancroft as the opener replacement.

Personally I agree with an above poster, open Khawaja this test if need be, bring in Handscomb for Burns and Patterson for Voges, Ferguson gets a reprieve.

In terms of Nevill and the bowlers I think we'll see how the rest of the shield games pan out.

Do not like renshaw. He needs to go at a better strike rate and play the australian way. Attack at all costs, even when we're chasing 60,000 runs with 20 overs to go.
Scored 50 off 51 in the last innings he played, I think he has listened to you.

Still not completely sold on Khawaja especially outside of Australia, but there's bigger issues at the moment. In terms of his batting position Khawaja looks better at 3 plus Smith and Warner are clearly are best 2 bats and we're better off having one in the top order and one in the middle order to give us greater stability across the innings.

Burns, Voges are clear outs with Lyon, Ferguson, Nevill and Mennie also under pressure. Handscomb is a clear in and I'd play one of S. Marsh, Dean, Renshaw as Bancroft just doesn't have current form. Patterson would be a better bet than Ferguson, but you'd think Ferguson gets another go. Mennie, Lyon and Nevill probably hold their positions even if it's on the back of having no other real options. Not sure if Sayers/Tremain, Holland/O'Keefe, Wade would offer much more, but I'd wouldn't be adverse to change for the sake of mixing things up.

He still only averaged mid 30's though and that's at FC level. Neither are good enough to bat top 6 just yet. The all rounder position has not worked for years. Would much prefer Handscomb and Patterson coming on at 5 and 6, not exactly veterans.

Can't see how it hurts to be honest. Give him a taste, he'll know it's most likely just for one match.
Yeah true. I'm all for trying to keep guys in the same batting position as much as possible which is why I'd rather Usman stay at 3 and not open. If that means Renshaw plays as the opener, sure.
