Doolan's name was being thrown around before the first test. I doubt he's done enough to get in after he failed pretty badly when previously selected. But, like Handscomb, it's a bloody well timed 200!

Surely people aren't serious about Doolan...

He's a better bat now than when he was first selected. So yeah, dead serious

Doolan would be a long way down the pecking order. If they were to bring in a bloke 30+ (which is unlikely anyway) White and Bailey would be in front of Doolan.

My team:
1. Warner
2. White
3. Khawaja
4. Smith
5. Handscomb
6. Maxwell
7. Stoinis
8. Head
9. Dunk
10. Starc
11. Hazlewood
12. Ferguson

Doolan was nearly axed from the Tassie side not long ago. To be fair he didn't really get a fair run when he was selected but he'd need to have a couple of good years in a row before he's even considered, should be well down the list.

My next team:

Bruce Laird (Stumpy, had ticker in truck loads)
Rick Darling ( Don't ask)
Greg Chappell
Kim Hughes (The Centenary Test Lord's version thanks)
Allan Border
David Hookes (the Centenary Test MCg version thanks)
Adam Gilchrist
Shane Warne
Bruce Yardley
Dennis Lillee
Jeff Thomson (the 170 km/h version of him thanks)

(12th man Ian Healy)
can keep when spinners come on and Gilly takes a break.

Head Trainer (Alex Jesaulenko)
Coach (Jack Worrall)

I know the era was different and batting wasn't as easy, but if BigFooty was around at the time how do you think Kim Hughes and David Hookes (RIP) would've been treated on these parts of the internet. A captain whos average generally hovered in the high 30's and eventually retired in tears and an insanely talented batsmen who only scored one century in 24 tests and was eventually moved on with an average of 34.

Or what do you think the reaction would've been when Bob Simpson was made captain after only 22 tests, 11 50's without a century and a batting average of 34 (he'd score 4 more 50's before finally cracking the ton - which he did with a triple ton in Ashes test)...

The phrase rose coloured glasses springs to mind.

WA must have the worst bowling attack in OZ, if Doolan can make 200.

You say that... but Behrendorf is I think probably the smokey among the fast bowlers if they aren't sold on Mennie (cos for whatever reason, "we" clearly aren't sold on Bird.)

He was, last season. Not sure why a player that's already been picked at the highest level needs to show anything more than having refined technique and regained form to be considered

Listening to this interview with Kim Hughes right now.
Fascinating character from fascinating time in Australian cricket.

I find it amazing to realise when Kim Hughes was made Australian Test captain the West Australians did not automatically have him their captain. They picked Rod Marsh as captain. How bloody silly and awkward for Hughes and Marsh to deal with that. You are captain of Test side but forced to be made only vice captain in shield side with same guy keeping for your Test team. No wonder the tough times Hughes went through with Lillee and Marsh. He was younger, they went to the elite standard of World Series Cricket. He was not part of that group and when they came back the officials make it even more awkward. Social media would have had a melt down back then if it existed with such stupid decisions by cricket officials.
Also Greg Chappell was Test captain if he was playing in Australia. Hughes was essentially only captain in the tours Chappell would not go on overseas like in India. It was only after Chappell retired Hughes really had his own team to captain and mould.

Alex Doolan

"Recent first-class form would suggest he is no chance - when this game started his past three years had brought only one hundred and an average of 24.81. But, following on from a big Matador Cup, posted his highest first-class score and went to stumps unbeaten on 202 at the WACA."

By what logic is he a better batsman now when he has been averaging 24.81 basically since he got discarded. One innings against a poor team? Give me a break. As an aside he shouldn't have been picked for Australia in the first place (Phillip Hughes should have been for that SA tour), yeah his form was good, but it wasn't like Voges's 14/15 shield season. Doolan = mediocre. I would keep someone like Ferguson every day of the week over Doolan, even if Doolan is 'in form',

Your comment about players who have made it at the highest level being picked again if they show a refined technique only works when the player has significant talent. Simon Katich in 2008, or Langer, Hayden, Martyn in the 90's/early 2000s are such examples. Not a player who averages low 30's, who averages low 20's in recent years and who in my opinion was incorrectly chosen in the first place.

Mark Waugh selector-out.
Legendary nsw bias and refuses to play Vics when they are in stellar form.
M.W. gtfo.
The vic whinging about bias is sickening. Hodge is literally the only player who could call himself unlucky, and it wasn't like there was no competition for his spot. Hodge got replaced by Martyn in that season he got 203 because he failed in the matches after and it was proven to be the correct move as Martyn made a match winning 100 in South Africa immediately.

I think the whinging is definately coming from the other side and your refusal to play Victorians in form, owell, need to oil that chip on the shoulders!

Hodge was comically overrated, junk against the short ball and loved just hanging his bat out there to dry catching edges. If he played Test matches for any significant amount of time probably would have averaged around 30 at best.
