Weird player Tabs. I mean he showed had all the physical tools for the game at the highest level but zero mind or feel for it and always injury prone.
He was never a natural footballer or particularly athletic besides being tall and strong. I mean he can run pretty well, good endurance but not great with lateral movement or ball skills. It took him years on the rookie list before he could even hold a mark, had hands like bricks. Terrible field kick & not much better with a set shot.

The thing he did/does have is discipline and perseverance in spades. There has never been a player I have definitively written off only to have to change my mind so many times.

Because he had to work so hard on the basic skills he always needed a long unbroken streak of playing before his skills started to click. A few years ago when he had a good run at it he was actually looking like a serious full forward. Taking big marks, nailing his set shots. Running up the ground to receive and link up. Then of course he broke down again.

It's such a shame to be honest. Even at the start of 2017-19 it looked like things had finally clicked for him before he missed pretty much the rest of the season with some sort of injury. Those shortened games of 2020 meant he could finally keep his body healthy for a full season. Start of 2021 he was had around 30 goals from the first 10/11 games and still went at about 2.5 for the whole season but he's never really recovered from that injury and the domino ongoing back/soft tissue injuries from it.

I think you are severely under-rating his endurance. He'd quite often run the furthest on the field in game for both teams.

Now he's having repetitive soft tissue injuries he's lost his biggest strength as a player.

Tabs was always so busy with trying to better himself he was never a player who could just ‘play’ and work with the other forwards. He never had chemistry with Hogan or Lobb. Frequently either got in their way or lead the opposition to them. It’s no surprise that since he’s been out of the side the younger key forwards have played together better as a unit.

IN: Ruckman,
Out: ?

We won 3 out of 4 games in a row and the first 3 we scored >100, our forward line functioned well

We had 2 Rucks (1 resting FWD) and 2 talls (Treacy, Amiss) to compliment our forwardline.
We lost Darcy in the 2nd qrt of the 4th game and we won, but we didn't score >100.

I called for Reidy to come in for Darcy as I felt that is the balance we need and seemed to be working.

If Darcy isn't fit and Reidy is next cab of the rank he should come in to straighten us up.

Jackson is not No 1 ruckman, the stats in the last two games show that. He is a great backup and adds a lot of flexibility and Treacy can help out if we lose one ruckman but we are damaging our ability to kick scores if we stay with that model.

Why can't our coaches see this?
Again, I agree with Reidy coming in. A 22 year old mature aged ruck. If he can not come in when Darcy is injured, when will he come in?

In a way I sort of wished we kept Meek for one more season, even if that meant we didnt get Jaeger O meara. I think we are fine with inside mids with oout JOM.

Thats weird... Because Dockers made finals in 2022 and won a final too. He did kick 23 goals and 8 behinds from 13 games.

In those 13 games Tabs played: 8 wins 4 losses and 1 draw.

Taberner is one of the hardest trainers we have ever had at Freo. He turned himself into a very good footballer through exceptional work habits. At his best he was good enough to make an extended All Australian squad and was a way better player than most here give him credit for. I view him the opposite of many here (not saying you E Shed). I see him as someone who has gotten the best out of his abilities and I'm more critical of the many players we've had with way more talent that haven't had Tabs workrate.
Three make All Australian squad

I think that was way more Lobb's fault than on Tabs. I think Tabs has always been great at doing a ton of unrewarded running that opened up space for others to lead into.

"Fremantle are a very good clearance side," Scott said.

A great assessment of Taberner, limited talent but unlimited dedication to getting the best out of himself. It's a shame he has been so injury prone as he needed continuity to play at his best.

Regardless of all that his Freo career is probably done as we should back Amiss to take Tab's spot in the team.

What's this these stories about Tabs being an oddball lol

Most players when asked this question usually says Tabs, then Schulz

I still think there is still room for Tabs in the team if fully fit. Playing half forward rather than full forward.

Could name so many that if they had Tabs’ workrate would be genuine elite at Fremantle.
That’s probably his downfall. He trained so hard to the point he’s running on hard/uneven surfaces such as the ARC and even Optus Stadium, he has broken his body.

Yeah. Treacy could play third tall. Jackson midfield.
