The only reason for him not to come straight in is to reduce the risk of him going straight out.
Hammys are like that.
Absolutely no doubt that there is more adrenaline and more demands on your body at AFL level, even more so v Pies at the G. Ping.
Is the risk worth it?
What are the chances that the improvement a non-match fit Young brings over whoever he displaces shifts us from a L to a W? Not high enough to justify the risk.
TBH I'd play it safe. Give him a week at Peel. He's so valuable to us over the coming weeks.
How can we possibley know this though from our position? He might have been right two weeks ago so they have waiting an extra 2, plus not risking his against the hawks when we decided it was going to be a tackle fest.

I suspect they will make him the sub anyway if they are concerned and want to manage the risk a bit more. It worked for Fyfe till he popped warming up. They would still want him to be able to play a full game if this is the case because there can always be an early injury.

It's a very important game, win this and it's not just making finals that is on the cards but doing well in them. Rip off the band-aid and play him I recon.

Out: Voss
In: Young

Out: Banfield
In: Walker

I like Voss, I just feel with Young playing forward at least 50% of the game, 3 talls forwards, 2 rucks plus Young is 1 too many talls.
While I tend to agree, Voss does bring something that Young does not to opposition defenders - fear. The number of times he has crunched an opposition defender and then in their next few possessions they cough it up due to blind panic is non-trivial.

On balance, it is still probably Young, but it is closer than most would realise.

Agree. It is hard not picking your best 22 players because it upsets team balance.

It will be interesting to see what we do come trade week regarding the 5 talls we have.

How can we know this? Usually from the injury reports. He was still listed as unfit a couple of weeks ago. Fit to play means match ready. But we all know it can take more time to be 'match fit' and we all know different levels of football and different positions make different demands.
That's how.
I support the club's decision. If they think he's 100% ready to go then great.

I'd be playing Young as sub.
And I'd keep Voss in the 22
I don’t like the thought of him doing a full warm up, then siting on the pine, trying to warm up at intervals & then if going on mid quarter a few run throughs & a rub from the physio.

If he’s playing he needs to start. He’s done 2 full weeks including match sim & if he is declared fit, you play him. It’s not like he did it first game back last time & if there is an issue it could happen in his 3rd game back.

I’m not sure people understand the massive blow to our chances in the big picture if Young does another bad string in the next 20 or 30 games

It’s a risk when coaches are coaching for their lives as well
It’s a risk you take when you’re trying to play finals using advice from those who are specialists in injury management & potential availability.

There would be numerous specialists ticking this off based on regular scanning & player feedback.

Let's be honest we're not playing Young in the WAFL, so I feel like whenever we him back will be too early for some posters on here.

I remember someone wanted to rule him out for the season to take a pick in the Mid Season Draft FFS.

I was all for Young starting in the WAFL last time but it sounds like they've taken a different approach this time.

From the drip feed of info on here it sounds like he could have played WAFL a couple of weeks ago but they've decided to hold him back at training instead?

The way he dominated his WAFL game last time it seems maybe they've decided he doesn't need the touch and would benefit from a more conservative accumulation of training load instead. In which case I'd feel much more at ease with him coming straight back into the big time, though I'd prefer it to be as sub once the pace of the game has backed off a bit.

Fyfe got injured in the WAFL earlier in the year. JOM pulled up sore the week after he played WAFL. Young got through a WAFL game, then pinged his hammy in his 4th AFL game back.

I don't see how playing for Peel mitigates any injury risk for Young. If he's deemed ready for any football, then it should be straight into the seniors. If they want to manage his minutes then start him as sub.

Even if he is rusty, he'd still be better than whoever he is replacing.

At least WAFL flogs won't be targeting him in the AFL, you just know those perennially stuck in the twos will have a go at any AFL star just for their own egos.

Think it's easier to manage minutes in the WAFL. That'd be the only advantage but with the sub rule in the AFL I'm not sure that's quite true.
