I'm not on his side, just pointing out some of the problems with the AFL's proposed system, particularly the trading of future picks as I'm not convinced it is a good move. I was against the system being changed at all, being a supporter of the academies I thought it was a stupid knee-jerk reaction. We will still be able to recruit the academy players we want. If Mills really is worth a number 1 pick, giving up a couple of extra picks isn't the end of the world.

RW- my issue is similar, but seriosuly how can they "fix" this?

In my opinion there is no real easy fix, as I cant see the AFL agreeing to all clubs being able to trade future picks just yet.

Do they change draft rules to say if you go over points, you then cant draft that player??

That is the only one i can feel the VFL clubs being happy with, but i would be livid!!

Ditto, unless some serious safety nets are put into place first. Something I can't see happening this year.

Likewise and I would suspect so would the club. If they change it in that manner we would just walk away from the academy process altogether I would think. In anycase I would think its too late for any further changes to be made to the system for this years draft.

Agree with you both.

Agree with you both.

Newbold has played his biggest trump card and isnt holstering his guns any time soon.

Next move is AFL to say yes- we will consider changes at which point I will be very very afraid- once shot twice shy after last year, that the week before draft the AFL says, no future trading no negative balances, if you do, you cant pick player.

VIC clubs dont care, doesnt make too much news and the academy clubs lose their shit.

I actually really want a response statement from the AFL on this!!!

No statement makes me scared a backroom deal is being done!

Surely it's too late for them to make any more changes this year. Surely.

On past form I wouldn't put it past the VFL to make changes as late as the time that Richmond calls out Josh Dunkley's name at pick (whatever pick you get for finishing 9th) and when the Swans go to claim him as F/S, Gill the Dill announces a new ruling barring us from using 2016 points because we just decided "you can't have everything" !

That is it. The problem with the AFL's proposed system is there is no need for it. The old system was fine when it produced project players and increased junior participation but when it produced a top player (Heeney) the world ended and a change needed to be made. It was totally agenda driven by the three loudmouth presidents creating hysteria among the rabble.

I will take these blokes serious and agree with what they say when they bring in

A hard salary cap
An even fixture
A hard cap on football department expenditure
A GF away from Melbourne.

Until then .........

Honestly with that, with live bidding on the day, how does the declaring father son both ways go? Like do we have to wait to see what pick he goes at prior to saying yep we want him and then he says nah???

Really could blow up on the day.

I'm an optimist.

I try to be but the evidence is contrary to that belief. On the fly, with a bias panel with near sighted results that need subsequent repair for most of the rules life is the order of the day

I just heard the SEN interview. "I'm not just wearing a Hawks hat here, I'm looking out for all other 14 teams in the comp" what is it with Eddie and newbold that they think they need to make themselves the spokesman for other clubs??. Peter Gordon didn't comment and he had a crack at him for not commenting, what a tool.

After listening to it in full I agree with posts above won't be a rule change this year, it was to pre-empt northen 4 from Having full rein to trade future draft picks 2 years in advance which "had been mooted" in AFL house

Eddie, Newbold, Gordon.

Why does the AFL even need a CEO?

Well all the bad ideas etc go Gils way while Eddie etc are trying to save thr AFL... Remember, Eddie never voted in favour of COLA, Gil did a face swap (travola cage style) & put on 80 kegs and assumed his identity & voted for it... Eddie now has to fight for equality.

I just want the Sydney Swans to focus on themselves and **** any growth of the game in NSW.
The trouble with that way of thinking is we will never overcome the go-home factor, which is the reason why we consistently have to pay overs for talent.

Growth in local talent is the way to ensure long term success and a permanently unhappy Eddie.

I'd call that a win-win.

I can live with that:D

F/S selections need to advise the club that they want to go to them beforehand. I'm not sure about the amount of notice required but Dunkley will most likely advise the Swans after the carnival.
