As carbine chaos kept reminding us, masten plays a role, aka “running patterns” seemingly regardless of form..hurt factor etc
And is easily the weakest link in chain
(Sorry bout comment the other day, bit out of line)
On this subject, I heard Shep talking recently on radio, saying that Masten cops a lot of flak from the fans who don't understand his job. It's a selfless role doing what Simmo asks of him. He doesn't get much glory or even stats, but it's an important role for the rest of the team. When he gets shifted as in the Freo game, you can see how capable he actually is, the real Masten in a sense. Shep also said Simmo is all about playing your role, not accumulating stats in the WAFL. If you play your role well in the WAFL, you get a gig when the opportunity allows. If a role player falls out of the firsts, another role player steps in. If someone is getting high stats weekly in the Wafl, but that role is not required, he doesn't get a gig. Probably explains why AhChee took so long to get a gig. The Wafl team is a copy or a mini-me of the AFL team. Role for role.
Also disproves many Masten critics.

When Yeo missed the Sydney game but they bought Josh Smith in ..

Masten always covers the far side of the ground away from the interchange . Braun used to do the same . His stamina allows more interchanges by other players like Nic Nat or a returning player like JK from injury . His footskills are very good for someone who runs so far . He obviously isnt a power athlete in congestion , it isnt his role hence gets caught htb cos he cant break tackle or free an arm . I used to hate Rowan Jones who had a similar role but I dont hate Masten . I see his value and I dont see anyone better at his role to replace him . When that player shows he can run all game with good footskills fine , bring them in .

Good point, the Smith-in was a mystery - did he come in for Yeo or Masten?
Also if it's role for role, it doesn't guarantee a successful role swap -any player can get
beaten by the occasion or his direct opposite on the day...and 'maybe' Smith did what was
asked of him by Simmo - who is also probably experimenting a little to get the right mix or killer mix (best 22) for the finals. On top of that is 'horses for courses' or match-ups for each game and opp. players, although we don't seem to deviate too much there.
Here's a Masten stat="Chris Masten this week will equal the games played tally of two former favourites of the Eagles fans who defected to the East Coast: John Worsfold and Quinton Lynch.."
Finally, there is still the argument of 'why can't we get someone to do the Masten role, who has a similar tank, but also has better skills and doesn't go to ground?'
Anyway, not to get caught up in Masto debate again?

Well it was a hard contested game in the first half which coincidentally was where Masten performed at his best.
Funny, Masten got to play Hutch’s role in his absence. Take that for what you will.

Schofield is more of a brute and a better match up for De Goey if he is selected.

Love Sheps work, but I still think with his pace he is better suited to take one of Collingwood smaller forwards (if Stephenson was playing, Shep would be the perfect match up)

Rioli!!

Hutch can cover ground well and is stronger, but uses the ball poorly. Anyway, I doubt that there will be a change involving Masten today.

I'd say JK in is a certainty, then a second inclusion for Duggan. No idea who though. Good problem to have right now for the coaches.

With Duggan out for 2 months, we have the chance to give someone an opportunity and for more than a game.

Options:
1. Cole - was preferred small defender, lost confidence and replaced by Nelson who has done enough to keep the spot. Sent back to WAFL and has delivered and looks confident. We know what we have with Tom and replacing Duggan sees a drop in spoiling, intensity and kicking (though Liam has his moments).
2. Schofield - covered de Goey in the GF and after a bumpy first 2 matches, did well in the absence of Barrass. Great depth and picking him misses a chance to try someone else.
3. Rotham - delivered well in the 2 matches he was in earlier and has been one of our best defenders in the Beagles. Probably my first option as I am liking the development in 2019 and I think he will be benefit the most of a sustained run.
4. Watson - I would love to see him get a gig but not sure against the Pies is the right week. Would try to get a couple of games into him before the finals.
5. Mutimer - has played defense a bit at BEagles but I think I have seen enough to say he is likely to go at season's end so I would prioritise him lower.
6.. Is Jarrod Brander fit enough to try on the HBF? He has the pace, the endurance and is good at ground level to be the third tall and I believe he will offer the biggest upside with games pumped into him. I realise he is listed as test and this week might not be the best but it is worth a punt.

Options, I like seeing flexibility. I also like it that I do not cringe with any of those above. MC will have some interesting calls to make and signs of a healthy list. We have similar options for our forward line.

My only wish is that we had those options in the midfield.
Can Ah Chee be played at HB or is he purely a midfielder/forward?
