Preview Changes v Saints

Big game next week. Wouldn’t want to drop two leading into the bye although it wouldn’t surprise me with the way we are playing right now and a quick turnaround off Perth.

Changes wise it sounds like Joey is back thankfully! I’d personally drop Oscar or Eric before Fort but can’t see them doing it. So Fort out. Joe in.

I’d also like us to drop Lyons, which again is unlikely but something needs to change in the middle. Can’t consistently get belted out of there and expect the defence to hold up.

Harris is still playing bog average but again they’re not going to drop him but maybe Lester comes back in for Darcy instead of Payne for a bit more leadership back there?

After all that, given the quick turnaround it wouldn’t surprise if there were 1-2 others to miss.

Mathieson deserves a go as does Tom Berry. I’d like Madden in as well for the point of difference his pace offers. God we look slow.

I’d be surprised if the coaches didn’t reward Matho. Been dominating in the VFL for weeks now leading up to his mammoth 49 possession effort on Friday. Him and Tom Berry would come in incredibly hungry.

TBerry has his issues with his disposal, but his fanatical attack on the ball/opponent with the ball might add something to a fairly, well, sluggish on occasion midfield.

Freo were practically walking the ball out of the centre stoppages, apart from Rayner, the ruckmen and inside mids did not do their job. Why was Robertson not given a go there? We can't carry 2 ruckmen when neither provided a presence up forward.

jl wasnt amazing but its not like the rest of the mid brigade rocked up guns blazing either. getting a bit of the whipping boy treatment in the context of that game. clug was well and truly down on output (albeit coming back off injury)

i would like to see matho get a run but i have a bit of a soft spot for him.

think lester could be really good for the back 6 assuming he comes in for gardiner. maybe if we have him doing more of the shotcalling back there harris can focus just on his game and hit those highs we know he can. ive been saying dizzy should be dropped for payne / lester for a bit and now that it seems like a forced change guess we see how it goes. him going down was a pretty big turning point against freo though so maybe ive been undervaluing his contributions

I watch every game

I've watched every Lions game since 1997 and just about every Brisbane Bears game since 1987.

One thing that I've learned over all those years, us that scapegoating individual players after a loss is a totally futile exercise.

Losses, especially narrow ones, are due to a complex mix of many factors

Was talking to my Dad earlier, who is far more astute about footy and AFL in general and he is of the view that perhaps our overall second position on the ladder is misleading. As he said, we've had a pretty soft draw to date compared to our opposition and with a very tough run over the next 3 games and then finishing with a final four games of the season that is even harder probably says we arent the second best team in the comp. I've often thought that our players seem to think they can turn and win - Hawks game proof of that - and overall our form has been on the nose for most of the year, despite winning.

I tipped us to beat Dockers today and on the back of dropping the Hawks game coupled with a number of teams on 32 points, I think if we have drop Saints and Demons, we could drop as far as sixth or seventh on the ladder in pretty quick time, which is a long way to thinking this morning we could be equal top if we beat Dockers. I suspect that maybe we just are a middle top 8 team with Demons, Dockers, Cats and possibly Blues and Saints and even the Dogs well in front of us.

Time will tell and I do hope my Roys - Lions loving Dad and even myself is horribly wrong.

My 4 year old son Jonathan roos Quinlan the 3rd said to me that we are big pretenders who will never win a game because Harris Andrew’s got dumped

Lester as got to be in next week. Probably for Gardiner. In fact, Lester should be a permanent member of our team.

I think you've got to reward reserves form to, otherwise those guys lose hope I would think. For that reason, Robinson, Mathieson and Terry should get a good so for guys that have been so, so in recent weeks such as Lyons, whose end is coming. Scary that he has years to go to. I like Lincoln a lot,but he needs a rest and Fort should be kept in. Oscar or Eric out for Joe for mine. Zorko out for Mitch.

We need hardness and pace and Mitch and Terry are that. I'm probably wrong and it is only the VFL, but Mathieson looks improved and his form should be rewarded.

I would've preferred to give him Freo, Saints and bye off - bring him back fresh for Demons.

Please don't tell me "but we should be playing our best team against the best".. did that already this week and we're just piling pressure on players who are down in form. Just bite the bullet and start rotating players off.
