Out: Gardiner, Answerth, Lyons, McStay
In: Lester, Ah Chee, Mathieson, Daniher

Lester plays back with AhChee. Mathieson is rewarded for outstanding form in Ressies and the fact that we know he will have a dip and McStay is unlucky, but is replaced by Daniher.

I would not consider dropping Fort. We should go in with two rucks and try to work their ruck department over. Fort and Oscar also have the ability to drift forward or park in the goal square.

Outs- Andrews. Gardiner.
Ins- Payne. Lester.

Andrews has been so far below avg for a very long time now. He either needs to find some confidence or he may just need a mental break from things. A top 2 team can't survive without a fully fit and confident full back. He is a pro. Obviously won't get dropped over minor indiscretions. But the coaching staff surely can't be happy with his performance.
I agree. The other thing he and Adams need to do is to spoil in the packs and mark in the one on ones if they are holding good position. As defenders, they are not there to try and take pack marks. Andrews in particular needs to bring back the Saucy Merrett style FIST. He also needs to play closer to his opponents so he can get there. A couple of times yesterday he went the spoil but was nowhere near it. Being three back waving your fist in the fresh air doesn’t help.

So putting pressure on the ball carrier to limit the amount of easy shots they get?

Sure that would have helped in a couple of instances, but the Bailey Banfield shots weren't unpressured from memory. The freo fans were having an aneuryism that he was coming in to the team pre-game so you can't tell me its an in-built skill of his that is repeatable.

Hawks missed a heap of chances late to get back to their usual expected score, but GWS kicked 4 more goals than expected and on expected score yesterday it should have been 89-86.

Other big problem is that we are back to converting as most teams normally would so despite scoring freely we aren't going at the crazy efficiency we were early in the year.

Assuming Dizzy is injured I'd go:

In: Daniher, Lester
Out: Fort, Gardiner

I'd be giving JL a few more weeks, but if he is a liability against the Saints and Demons at centre bounces, I can see him losing his spot.

I think Dev may be at risk of losing his spot to Maffo

The ins and outs are always worth a read but I have a question...

Is a good player in bad form worth less than an average player in good form?

And a supplementary...

Is it better to let the good player come good if the average player won't be in the team come finals?

The issue I have with bolded bit is players who're classified as average in 2s could have improved and could even get into some sort of form. But this approach would mean they are not getting the opportunity to show what they could do in 1s - especially when in form.

May be we should reward form? We have been doing the best 22 approach for a while now, may be we could go the other way and see how things play out?

It's a bloody hard question to answer really... I guess it comes down to upside?

Case in point... Players like Matho and Lester come up a lot. 2 players I love to bits and who are the heart and soul of the club.

In the short term these guys may well offer some gain... but do we already know the upside? Not for a minute suggesting they're done as players but I guess I'm trying to get a read on whether people think short term gain is more important mid season than riding things out?

I don’t mind that though. When the pressure was on Dev was slightly off the pace. In no way is that a knock on him and I truly hope he sticks around because I can see the upside in him. Yesterday though he made a few simple skill errors. When you have 13 touches you can’t really afford that. Yes I know he was played out of position on the outside but I feel matho has earned his shot now. I actually think he has a heap to offer inside but I want it to be at the expense of JL and not dev… but I just can’t see that happening

Anyone think McCarthy’s spot could be in jeopardy? Been pretty average for the last 6 or so weeks.

Below changes would never happen but I’d like Matho’s outstanding reserves form to be rewarded at the expense of Lyons who still does some great things but I don’t think they have been outweighing all the negatives as of late and truly believe he is turning into a liability in the midfield. Lester and Daniher in for Gardiner and Fort are fairly self explanatory.

Prior would be unlucky but I’d like to see some added pace from Tom Berry and James Madden. Tom Berry to play the Zac Bailey role spending time in the midfield and resting forward and Bailey to take Linc’s role as the permanent small forward. Linc been badly out of form and Tom Berry would come in hell bent on making an impact.

In Lester Daniher Mathieson Terry Madden
Out Gardiner Fort Lyons McCarthy Prior

Linc was brilliant against GWS

Madden hasn’t shown a heap this year and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him delisted come years end. With those outs, where would you play him? There isn’t a spot in the backline for him looking at that. I would love to see Bez and Matho in but I’m not sure who would go out. I really wish Payne didn’t get injured!

Madden earnt himself a 1 year extension earlier this year.
So he will be around until atleast the end of next year.

For some reason I thought that was the end of last year. Could he be one that we slip to the rookie list then possibly

Joe's back, but at what price?

The logical decision for Fagan and his match committee might be to leave Fort out, but that would require Daniher to spend time in the ruck, which is problematic against either Ryder or Marshall and also takes him away from the forward line, where he’d kicked 19 goals through six-and-a-half games before injury.

So, is it Fort, Hipwood or McStay on the sidelines this weekend?

It’s a nice problem, but a tough one for a team hungry for four premiership points.

I wonder how Macca would go playing that 2nd ruck roll…

Yeah it was a good game. Bobbed up for some goals as you highlighted. Been average for weeks though outside of that performance in my opinion. Feel like he may be carrying an injury niggle in his groin or hamstring because he isn’t moving as well as he usually does.

would be surprised if McStay is on the sidelines, especially whilst we are attempting to sign him to a five year deal. Fort is rested (don't like the word dropped), as he has been playing OK

Either Answerth moves up to a wing opening a spot for Madden down back or Madden plays more of a wing role. I really feel like we could use his pace in the side. I’d be surprised if he was an inclusion though. Hasn’t been tearing up the reserves, although I don’t think he ever truly has. He seemed to adapt really well to AFL level and rose to the standard.

It's better to have Fort and Big O against Ryder and Marshall. If we go solo ruck and Ryder takes control, we have nowhere else to turn. I think from matchup perspective, we need both rucks this week.

Hipwood was rushed back due to all our tall stocks getting injured. I wouldn't mind him dropping back to 2s to build some continuity. He may need a few games under his belt after ACL return anyway. Daniher and McStay were going ok earlier this season so it'll be good to have them back together.

Just my opinion but I don't think there's any hope of Hipwood ,McStay , Lyons or McCarthy getting dropped. Let alone Andrews.

Likewise it seems Madden's Senior games have been overrated. Never showed much and there are others in the reserves who are playing a lot better than him.

If Daniher comes in Fort will go out which means Oscar really has to lift against this opposition. And if he's getting beaten the M/F needs to wise up and feed off the opposition.

There have been lots of changes suggested on here but first things first we need to see who's fit and available. I'd love to get T Berry in because at least he'll go both ways and put pressure on.

I really thought we'd lift and win against Freo . For the first 3 quarters we were able to bring the intensity for stages but just didn't finish off and got overran. I don't know whether we just looked tired because they started getting the pill or whether we are just tired. Them kicking goals out of their backsides drains your spirit a bit.

Our performance doesn't warrant wholesale changes but a freshen up and a couple of new faces might give us a little extra.
