So if our set-up in 2014 with Carlile (easily replaceable by Clurey), Trengove, Jonas and Hombsch got us to a preliminary final and our set-ups ever since haven't even taken us to an elimination final, why is it 'nuts' to suggest that it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to revert to the old structure?

Howard (or Eddy, or probably even Marshall) is a more natural forward than Trengove. Trengove is a much better stopping defender than Hombsch. Hombsch is a much better intercept defender than Hartlett. Move one of those forwards into Trengove's role, Trengove into Hombsch's role and Hombsch into Hartlett's role and we're suddenly immediately better equipped to play team defence than we are now, as well as giving us a forward line which actually has forwards in it.
Agree. Absolutely need a tall down back. A real tall that is.

"He averages up around 9 to 10 tackles a game"

He doesnn't kick many goals, nor provide many goal assists and simply isn't competitive in the air. So yea great he runs around laying tackles, maybe half of which are a result of his own turnovers. A for effort.

"It's a team balance thing for us - do we have three talls in our front half? Does Jacko go back? We are going to trust what we've done over the whole of preseason and the first eleven weeks of the year."

Realistically we don't have three tall forwards in our front half even if Howard played. We would have two tall forwards and a defender who is trying really hard to do the team thing. His value is doubled as a defender, tripled against a team such as Essendon.

Yep that's where I differ, I don't believe his size is relevant. He's pushed off big bodies, he is an outstanding tackler and can take down anyone, and he has shown an ability to be super strong in tackles and escape them. So for mine, all of the concern about his height is irrelevant. However I agree I think a lot are predjudiced against him purely based on height before they even consider any other attributes he brings to the table.

For the record I agree that he may still have a low ceiling, and may not make it, but I don't see the point in writing him off based on the fact that we have seen some glimpses of him that have been very good. So I don't see the harm in giving him a crack while in form.
Is there any chance...
.... any chance at all that Neade has been restricted by where he has been played ( as another poster has stated) or who has been around him, or team structure ie the feed to him or the ball being at the other end etc

I am also sure he is not personally saying he wants to play FF ( cough Ebo) or take a talls place
The non selection of Doogs or selection of Trenners or coaches selections leaving him Ebo'd is not his fault

At his best the guy is electric and can do it all
I am glad he is an and its nothing to do with the other selections or non selections
I hope he grabs this chance and does well

Does anyone actually agree with Ken's statement about Neade being our best player at the Magpies?

There's no way a 1 goal a game forward can be our best player this year.
Yeah he won't be top 6 in the magpies b and f side right now

These are the three. Between them not once dropped. And the three with the most spineless and cliche comments to media and fans on our performances. Breeding poor culture.

Agree. Their entire careers they have been protected. Aside from 2 good years Trav has been a loser compared to his potential.. West huff has spent 8 years without an opponent, just drifting. Easiest downhill run in the history of the AFL

Young just has to hit the scoreboard more. Just doing his job isn't enough - but at least he DOES his job, unlike Ah Chee.

Neade is exactly what this team needs. A defensive forward who can provide a chop out for Sam Gray off the bench and really help lock the ball in our forward line so our defence can set up against transition.

When Pittard was dropped for Houston, it was understandable because Pittard was meant to be the running line breaker that helped us move the ball even better - but he's done none of that. So Houston comes back in and - like I said at the beginning - our prospects of winning the flag will rise and fall with his development. Jasper will come back in - if he comes back in - for one of Hartlett/Byrne-Jones/Broadbent (Byrne-Jones for mine. I think Pittard would offer more in the same role). But Houston stays in the side from now on.

People crying because Howard or Atley weren't selected are just pathetic cry babies who want their bottle. Howard had a good performance, which is why he is listed second emergency, but he's not John Butcher, where we have to bring him in quick just in case the pixie dust fades. He's putting pressure on Trengove, who puts pressure on Hombsch. Anyone who thinks we're going to play 3 key forwards in our forward line (Dixon, Howard, Trengove) is as nuts as anyone who thinks we're going to play 4 key defenders in our backline (Trengove, Hombsch, Clurey, Jonas).

The thing about our performance this year is that no one could say we've had the kind of performance that most teams have had this year where everything we touch turns to gold against a quality opponent. Even last year against Collingwood we had a game like that. We've been smacking lower teams without being impressive, because the way we've done it people can feel that we are still off.

We're right in this. When Kern says that he reckons Marshall will get an opportunity by the end of the year, it makes me excited. When I know that Drew and Atley are stringing good form together but they have to bide their time while we give existing players an opportunity to see if they can perform in our system, I understand it.

Make no mistake, this is about winning the flag this year, but also winning it next year and the year after. Finding out who is up to it, and who isn't.

This is back to the old Janus.

I prefer the new Janus. I only agree with about 5% of this

The best way to be a defensive forward is win the ball and score.

wtf is the gameplan? kick it forward, then when they get the ball, we will scramble around and put pressure on and hope for a turnover.
If we could hit someone on a ****in lead we wouldn't need 4 defensive forwards.

Agree with you 110% but its not going to change while we have the coaching staff we have. Now let's say we make the 8 this year i would guess that will be looked at as a good year and Ken will keep his job. If by some miracle we win one final he would be odds on for a contract extension. This club has ment so much to me all my life and have never even had a passing thought of them losing. Lets just say we go down this weekend miss the 8 finish around 12th
What would be the repercussions come seasons end?

Nothing. Everyone at the club is weak as dish water. Losers from left to right, up to down.

We are fail with a capital F.

No one has been held accountable for anything since 2005.

By our own historic standards we are a joke and have become one of those clubs like south or west or woodville we used to laugh at and wonder how their fans put up with always losing and their team being shit

What's with the passive aggressiveness, Janus? It's not very "stoic" of you to go around throwing insults at people who disagree with your opinions, is it?

And didn't you chuck a wobbly recently when people called you out on your bullshit predictions of Port's impending eternal dominance? And yet here you are again bukkakke-ing your condescension at everyone like we're sitting at a hentai convention and you're the master scriptwriter of the whole darn show.

Mao Tse-tung would be disappointed.

Just put Janus on ignore mate. I did ages ago and have been happier since. Good-for-nothing poster all around.

Is it just coincidence that Choco and Ken share the midget KPF philosophetish or does the board build player height limits into the head coach contract?
Both also share the philosophy that if there are 17 coaches standing in one corner they will go stand in the other.

When eventually proven right they'll go down as geniuses!

I'd argue that he's stunk it up plenty.

50 AFL games on career averages of 11 touches, 2 marks, 1 goal and 3.5 tackles. No improvement of note in that time, with his averages pretty consistent throughout his years on the list. If 50 games at AFL level isn't enough of a sample size to have moved Neade on, then god help us. Despite playing most of his career in a far better side, he's barely a statistical or talent improvement on Cameron Hitchcock, he just has more durable hammies.

That said, I could handle his inclusion as outside pace if the team balance was a bit different, and if it wasn't the most obvious opportunity to bring in a developing tall forward in the history of AFL/VFL selection nights.

If he can increase his career averages by 4 touches 2 marks 1 tackle and 0.5 of a goal over another 100 games would that be good enough for you?

I don't agree that Butcher was a garbage option but I also don't think he would've made much of a difference to our overall finish. We were cooked injury/suspension wise and one player here or there wasn't going to change anything.

This year with the luxury of a healthy list and guys in the 2s practically kicking in the door it's definitely WTAF territory.

We wanted butcher in also because we had lost Ryder, lobbe, Schultz, Dixon and Howard. Quadrangle of doom remember. Trengove was getting flogged rotating ruck and forward

We said stick a witches hat out there if for no other reason than the straighten the team up and retain structure! Just play a tall...ANY tall

And here we are, a year later with dysfunctional forward 50 entry.

Unless he was wildly turning the ball over then yeah that'd be much better.

NO HAHA I AM REAL BIGFOOTBALL FAN.

I REALLY LIKE THE WAY MR HINKLEY THINKS! MR HINKLEY, MR THOMAS, AND MR KOCH AND THE 'WE ARE PORT ADELAIDE (TM)' FAMILY ARE ALL VERY SMART AND REASONABLE. WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AT WAR WITH EAST ASIA JAKE NEADE IS AN EXCELLENT THIRD TALL OPTION UP FORWARD, AND JACKSON TRENGOVE IS CLEARLY IN AA FORM UP FORWARD. DOUGAL HOWARD WILL START TO PUSH FOR SELECTION WITH JUST 6 OR 7 MORE CONSECUTIVE 8 GOAL GAMES I'M SURE. GOOD WORK PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB!

That's what Rioli has done, playing in possibly the best team of all time, and being played further up the ground at times. If Neade can do this level for the rest of the season I'll also be happy.
