The thing with Hammer is he looked to be coasting v Westies
10 kicks
6 h/balls
1 mark
1 tackle
2 clearances

He said he ran out the game well so that’s a big plus BUT this wasn’t
AFL speed
On a slippery deck v fast small men is it worth putting in Hammer?
It’s round 3 and a long season
Not convinced and figure his
TOG will be in the 50/60 range
Anyway gotta trust the medicos
I suppose.
IMO another week or so

I know who he is mate. I think Drew was better and has been better in 2019, particularly with his defensive work at stoppages. I think Drew could well be the man that goes to Neale this week. I also think Rockliff and Boak have been better as inside mids.

Dont get me wrong I really like what SPP brings. I like our balance at present and i worry that if we bring in Wines for Amon, then we have 5 inside mids (of whom probably only Boak can also play outside). Perhaps SPP could come off a wing or spend more time forward.

I am glad its not my call to make....
I know and I agree with Drew, he has been amazing all year.
Maybe Ebert more on the wing swapping up forward with spp.

When and why did everyone start hating Dougal Howard? Sincere question. Wasn't he the man last year?

I think I started it. I don't hate him. Just thought he made way too many mistakes last year and leaked goals. I just pointed out that he seemed to get off lightly from most on this site, and people seemed to tolerate his ****ups. Felt like people were watching a different game to me.

Dougal has a tonne of promise and upside as a generational athlete of his size in the afl.

Last year he dominated in patches and made mistakes in others.

I’m fully on board dougal being a long term part of our plans for the future.

Having said that he has some way to go in learning the art of defending. He just turned 23. I’m confident if we back him in he can become something special but I’m also realistic that it could take time and it could be a slow journey.

Some of that developing might be in the afl side and some might be in the magpies.

I’m ok with him making mistakes as long as he is doing the right thing

Ie, if he gets outmarked in defense by a guy he should have blocked instead of trying to take the mark that’s just a learning thing and would rather that than perpetually making the mistake of spoiling everything.

He is an elite spoiler and there is a place for that but spoils create 50/50 balls for the opposition to capitalise on and right now with clurey taking marks galore in defense Howard getting his fist to everything could cause more harm than good.

We are undersized in defense though and I am very much pro- giving Howard an opportunity, especially against a tall Brisbane side. How Howard would be judged in that game if he plays and whether he should continue should depend more on how he operates with our defense more than his ability to make hero plays or his mistakes.

He's going through the typical development phase that all our key backs do.

It happened to Hombsch.

It happened to Clurey.

It happened to Austin.

It's now happening to Howard.

You go through every single young key defender that has been on our list, and Ken will always back them in for a stretch as soon as they are in good form in the SANFL. Then they get to AFL level and their deficiencies get worked out by AFL teams who have professional scouts and forwards that get tape of their games (which doesn't happen at SANFL level). It's at this point that Ken says that in order to get another game, those deficiencies have to be either eliminated or mitigated.

Don't be surprised if we bring in McKenzie or Broadbent along with Hammer and Wines.

If Carlton are Port 2013, Brisbane are Port 2014. We need to clog up the defensive area as much as possible and catch them on the counter, because that's what they love to do to teams.

When are people are going to realise that McKenzie is not up to AFL level. He is a one trick pony with his long kick . His defending is diabolical.

Broadbent is a depth player now. Will come out into the team as a last resort if we have a huge run with injuries.

Very stiff, but the other options are (for inside mid) - Boak, Rock, Drew. It has to be out of he and Drew. I think Drew is better defensively and could very well do a job on Neale.

Better defensively ? SPP tackling machine and his immense physical presence around the contest sits outside of stats .

AFL coaches voted SPPs first two years of work as best in his draft year .Two good games this year, 40 games now played AFL vs kid drafted same year , 2 good games played but they need to be measured against he is a year 3 player now not a rookie as impressive young draftees of this year .

In my gutless way I am glad someone else has to decide who to drop.
I suppose last in first out is reasonable, in which case Drew is the man to suffer for Ollie. I just do not think Wines can be left out if fit.
Only other option is to retain Drew in another role, and isolate our worst performer from the weekend and sacrifice him. That would be Marshall, and Im uncomfortable with that. It would mean someone like Westhoff goes to Marshall's position and Drew to the wing maybe.
Maybe start rotating the youngsters, as will need to happen through the year. Im not comfortable with that either. Drew aint a good fit for any of the other 3 kids. And its too early to do that.
Im waffling....I'll leave it there.

Drew isn't like the other "3 kids" , he's a year 3 player

Get the feeling from the pressers that Hammer may spend another week in the Maggies.
Reckon that means Ollie and Dougs in.

TBH I wouldn't put it past Ken to leave HH in the SANFL for another week but do something random like promote Mayes rather than go like-for-like and bring Doogs back. Like-for-like has never seemed to be a great priority of his.

I'd be stunned if we brought ether of them in.

Had a weird dream the other night that we named a lineup similar to what most people are saying, and then an hour before the game made four late changes to confuse the opposition. All I remember was that Clurey and SPP were two of the late outs.
Can’t rememeber completely but I’m pretty sure we outclassed them. Very strange I know.

Watch how Drew sets up at a stoppage and his defensive work around stoppage. Its pretty good and its better than SPP in my opnion.

Set up determined by coach , roles by coach . SPP often tags best player I.e Cripps .

I think you'd want a bigger slice of action than two games and winning ones to judge someone .

40 games a fair slice

Hinkley would have to be going back to his old ways if he dosent bring in D Howard we will be desperate for height down back against Brisbane, i think they have the side to beat us but leaving Howard out will ensure they do. Hinkley has to inspire him to greater heights.
