It was a common theme for much of the JLT series that Eddy had given the forward line some much needed structure, and let's hope that hasn't been lost with his non selection for today's game.

As much as we love Jacko for his work ethic he is not a genuine forward, and Westy hasn't been successful as a key forward since JC played fullback for Jerusalem.

Bringing in an extra runner in Impey is fine, but not if it affects the overall balance of the team, which I fear maybe the case.
Hopefully those fears will turn out to be misplaced.

Plus, it's about settling on the best structures for the team for the rest of this season.

We now have three of S Gray, Amon and Impey in a side that already is using Young and Wingard up forward, and R Gray, Polec and Boak as mids who start outside of the centre square at the first bounce. Add to that our fixation of playing Westhoff as a nomadic swingman with no fixed address.

We need a reliable, forward smart, marking player close to goal. If Schulz was fit and on our list he would be playing today. Eddy should be too.

Some people just don't get it.

There's no doubt the PA base isn't once bitten twice shy, it's mostly 'yeah but, nah but that was then and this is now, this time the fire won't burn because'.

Those who don't learn from history...

:thumbsu: Eddy is the replacement for Schulz. We have no-one else in the squad that fits this bill. Astonishing he has been omitted after a superb team win. Our coaching group do not value system or structure or are prepared to throw it out the window for individual talent or potential.

God what a bunch of babies! we have a taller structure this year even with Eddy out the side get the **** over it he'll get more opportunities as Ken suggested in his presser.

IF Trengove proves himself as a genuine key focal point then we have that taller structure. That's still a big if.

Lol. What makes you think he'll make good on that after his KPF policy of the last 4 years?

I believe he'll get more chances on the obvious facts that he moves like a forward, knows how to lead and can kick, three qualities a bloke at Centrals failed to deliver.

Blind favouritism is probably thinking someone is a walk up start after a 3 possession game.

Precisely. A one game player with three possessions and zero scoring shots to his name. We haven't exactly dropped Warren Tredrea here. People need to take a step back from the edge.

I think this is a big part of the frustration here. It's hard to see Trengove as a genuine key forward. But that's what Kern sees him as this year - that's where he has trained during pre season, it's where he played during the JLT games and it's where he played last week.

This is not like the last four years, we actually already have a two tall structure in our forward line. And two big, lumbering talls who are unable to provide much defensive pressure at that. That is why this change has been made.

Looking at the winning teams so far, there is a big emphasis on small, speady types. Impey in is just following the trend.

What's he got to do with it?

Also, he was looking better than Dixon at times. So was Schulz.

Wot? The only substantial height difference in our team (this week) compared to any point during last year is Powell-Pepper for Neade...if you're desperate enough to make that argument.

We should be doing absolutely everything we f****** can to get away from our gameplan/structures of 2015/16.

Not to mention the ridiculous message this inclusion sends to our fringe players. Get off your nut and slam into a few cars during the off-season, cop a slap on the wrist and slot straight back into the side because you've shown a few glimpses of talent over the years. Meanwhile a guy like Snelling is consistently dominating for the Maggies and can't even cop a selection for the JLT.

Eddy will get more games this season. I see Amon going more on the wing and westy spending more time up forward. Ryder and trengove to switch ruck forward. Dixon to play centre half forward creating space for young gray and the jacko to do their thing. I think young plays both small and taller for his size. I also think that when howard is fit and firing he is a chance to become best 22. I am really excited by that prospect. A future forward line of him dixon frampton and Marshall is pretty exciting.

Ironic coming from one of the biggest 'play butcher' advocates.

The play Butcher movement was only given oxygen by our refusal to play a second tall forward to support Schulz (2014-2015) and Dixon (2016). Dixon now has a second tall forward to support him - Trengove.

The problem with our tall forward structure is not the quantity of talls, it's the quality.
You're a clever man and a good poster.

If Schulz was on our list, fit and in reasonable form, would you pick him today alongside of Dixon and Trengove, with Westhoff named on a wing?

If the answer is yes, then I would argue that we need to persevere with Eddy to try to consolidate that same structure for the rest of the year.

Westhoff is the unsettling factor in this conversation. The way he is being played (and is playing), he really can't be considered as the third tall.

Given this, we have a wonderful opportunity to go back to a well proven structure of:
Big, aggressive CHF (Dixon)
Combative ruck-forward (Trengove)
Agile, smart, leading, accurate FF (Eddy)

That structure would be a thing of utter beauty. Eddy IS good enough to make it work. You can't throw the baby out with the bathwater after one quiet game against Dane Rampe, when the rest of the forward line has worked superbly. Especially not after a productive JLT series where he was our most impressive tall forward.

We simply don't need all of Amon, Impey and S Gray in the team. We're not going to win finals with that profile of smalls.

We needed to take a longer term view to this.

I'm really hoping Frampton does start ripping the Sanfall to shreds this year it'll throw the cat amongst the pidgeons a bit with selection, he has filled out nicely now and his forward work is improving by the minute by all reports.

They all seem to be missing the point that Ryder will rest forward also let alone when he drifts forward from the ruck in general play anyway, we've only seen one legit game with Dixon & Ryder working together.. it excites me

I think just cause Trengrove plays forward now doesn't mean he IS a forward. I can step in the octagon but it doesn't make me a good fighter.

I like the two tall structure so either Dixon or Trengove would make way for Schulz.

Trengove can't really be swung back because Clurey, Hombsch and Jonas are looking the goods back there.

I think Dixon is a better forward than Trengove, but not by a great deal and the gap could potentially close as the season goes on and Trengove learns his craft as a forward. So really, it would come down to who would provide better support for Ryder as the second ruck - Trengove or Dixon. My answer would be Trengove and I'd omit Dixon from the team.

And re Westhoff, you are correct. If we wanted to play a third tall, it'd have to be him because he's mobile enough to provide the defensive pressure that is required in modern football. A factor, incidentally, which isn't as badly exposed if you play three talls at the SCG due to the smaller size of the ground.

How can you say the backline is looking the goods after one game but say Eddy doesn't deserve a spot after the same game where or forward line looked more free and potent than it has in a long time?

You don't want to change one thing but in favour of changing the other?
