Hopefully Rich (finger) and Robbo (calf) are OK for next week. If so, surely the INs will be limited to Merrett, Zorko and Green.

It is difficult to predict who will come out, but I would probably go with Bewick, Gardiner and Mayes or Beams (Beams was far more aggressive, but you can't play all day as a small and justify coming away with less than 10 possessions even if he was in a run with role). It depends if we need an extra tall or not as to whether Gardiner stays. Paparone and Andrews were hardly any better today, but have credits in the bank. Freeman was poor, but that is the first time I have really seen him not impact a game.

I actually thought Harwood was pretty good in a backline that was under enormous pressure given the overlap defence we play.

Out. Harwood
In. Merret.

Keep it simple. Fewer changes the better.

Beams who wasnt meant to play essentially comes in for harwood.

Bewick, freeman, Mayes for green, merrit, Zorko.

Surely bewicks card is marked now? We must be better getting games into any combination of Keays, Robertson, Dawson, Mathieson when back than him.

In: Zorko Merrett Green
Out: Mayes Harwood Bewick

The likes of Paparone, Freeman, Lester all need big games next week to keep their spots. I hope Robbo is ok...

Who would play on the half back line if you're dropping both Mayes and Harwood and not replacing them with any half backs? I don't think Harwood will get dropped, he'll be better next week with Merrett's more predictable spoils.

Claye Beams and Tom Cutler. We had an extra small defender today remember? CBeams was a late in. So really I am only dropping one small defender and bringing in Merrett as a tall defender and Hanley or Rich can drop back for stints if need be when Cutler and CBeams need a rest or the structure needs a bit of a shake up.

Curious as to why you would drop beams. A little rusty but gave alot more than harwood.

Harwood can end up our small defender (back pocket / tagger) and I feel we need to persevere with him. I think he'll improve as our team does.

C.Beams I see as not quite good enough for a midfield role, nor a running defenders role. A really nice kick though.

Just my 2c :thumbsu:

I can see your points. How ever IMO beams is the superior player. Does some pritty good things one on one and has the pace to be keep up with most small forwards.

I must admit though i was a touch suprised with some of the things harwood done in traffic. When i thought oh shit harwoods got it. It ended up being ok.

Your probably right as in when the team improves harwood might. I just think claye is super talented and needs game time to get confidence back in his body. His field kicking is superb. His running has improved.

I just cant see them in the same team alongside cutler.

Ins: Merrett, Robertson, Zorko, Green
Outs: Robinson (calf), Harwood, Paparone, Bewick (omit)

I've put Hanley back on the HBF, this is where he started and with our new game style of taking the game on he will provide that drive we need. Merrett's our big lock down defender and Paparone comes out for him. I just can't stand seeing a bloke in his fourth year being so goddamn skinny and I personally don't think he'll be there in a few years time and think that Gardiner at least provides body on body and a contest. I just watched Mayes draft highlights and have to admit that most on here are right. He is not a defender and definately should be playing forward of the ball. Would prefer him playing as a HFF so maybe swap with Bell who has elite running. Green will be badly underdone but he is best 22 and our leading goal scorer for the last two seasons so he's an in. Swap Robbo for Robbo if injured and I think that N Robbo will provide a better contest than Bewick. Harwood might be a bit tough but he is another that I don't see being there in a few years time and C beams is a better player so he gets the nod. Zorko back in after his week off.

We have a bit of an issue with our small defenders. You could justify dropping Harwood, Mayes and Claye Beams. Even Cutler is probably only safe by default.

Gardiner was really good though. Just needs to be a little more careful with his ball use. And I didn't think Bewick was all that bad - just not involved enough.

To me Beams, looked a little rusty. I think he could do with two or three weeks in the NEAFL getting his hands on the footy more. And obviously he was the last man picked.

Merrett will come back for Beams, leaving us with him, Andrews and McStay to mark to play on Petrie, Waite and Brown. Gardiner goes to Thomas or whoever is deepest forward at any point, leaving Cutler and one of Harwood or Mayes rounding out the backline. Bewick and Paparone to drop back from the wing to help out.

So that would be Beams and Harwood/Mayes out for Merrett and Zorko. Green can wait another week.

Between Higgins, Harvey and Anderson the Roos are pretty quick around their half forward line. We'll be too slow, but I don't see an obvious way to fix that through team selection.

As soon as we start dropping key forwards after one poor game we revert back to the Voss-esque -Jordan Lisle revolving door.
Freeman has proven he can impact games at this level, don't chop him after one away game in Perth

I was skeptical of having resting mids up forward but I liked it last night and with Green coming back in I just think there's no need for a third tall.

For me, I'd rather Claye than Harwood in the medium term, but I tend to agree with Ironmonger that he needs some time in the NEAFL to get his touch back. I was also really happy with Gardiner. He doesn't get beaten much, and even when he gives up a mark he clatters the opponent so they can't get a quick play on.

For Cutler's lapses, he looks the most convincing runner and user to me right now. I reckon he's safe for a while yet.

I'm also more comfortable with where Paps is at than most on here are. He's definitely lean, but I see him around a bit and in the flesh he's a tall, broad guy. He went to ground a bit much, but did a good job on Le Cras and has (IMO) fairly good hands in close. I'm more worried about Harwood whose disposals look pretty clean but nearly always put someone under pressure.

Also, I reckon we'll keep the talls. Freeman didn't have his best game, but I reckon the presence of three marking targets stretched the defence and generated chances for the other two. It might be his turn next week.
