I think Cutler being out will save CBeams.
Taylor seems the obvious one if DBeams can play, as he will play more forward on his return.
Obviously Paparone is a swap for Dawson.
Does Schache come in for Gardiner?

Did you watch the same game as me? Gardiner was excellent. He is one of the first picked. He and Lewis Taylor are our future you can't be dropping them.

Going with the coaching staff and the minimal changes they make, I'd say in:

D.Beams

OUT: Dawson

Might give Paparone another week. If not, I'd say we'd have to maybe change our midfield rotation around a bit as we can't afford to take out too many of our backmen.
This seems logical with Mcstay taking Dawsons position down back. That will mean Schache will come in at the expense of who?

Can we afford to have McStay, Merrett, Gardiner and Andrews in the backline? I feel like there'd be some serious mobility issues

Agree to a point. But I'd have Mcstay quicker than Dawson at the minute. Paps is the obvious but if the coaches go for minimal changes? And Dizzy is more than capable playing on the smaller type.

Speed isn't so much an issue for me, more so when the ball hits the ground. Cutler really is that perfect 4th tall-medium defender.
Paps I'd like to see float between half back and the wing, he's so versatile and adds a lot of run.

Outs:
Dawson (Can't have 1 kick in an AFL match and not get dropped)
C.Beams (Just doesn't get it enough at the moment and doesn't use it well enough when he does)
Walker (Been doing a lot of the F50 heavy lifting for not much return - week off)

Ins:
D.Beams
Paparone
Schache

This except maybe Mayes out instead of C.Beams.

In any event this should be the strongest team we have fielded in recent years.

If either paps or Mcstay replace Dawson, I think we're going to be a bit better off mobility wise. Dawson seems to moving at tortoise pace at the minute. Cuts is that missing link I agree.

If I'm doing like for like:

Dawson out for Paps. No stress with this, if Paps is good to go.
McStay out for Schache. No stress here either, since McStay only came in because Schache was rested.
Taylor or Mayes out for D. Beams. The latter isn't really like for like but is an easy reshuffle. Don't feel as great with this change.

If Paps isn't good to go, we'll probably see Beams in and a reshuffle to get Rich back off the half back line or something.

Mayes is a very smart forward that has been trying to play back as a result of us having no capable / regular half backs. We went into our F50 a massive 60 times on the weekend; I'd have liked Sammy either delivering the final pass or receiving it as the likely result would be a positive one.

You can't buy footy smarts around goal and I feel we are under utilising him.

One thing is that was a pretty brutal game. Lot of big tackles, bumps, etc from both sides. When you look at that and how much travelling we have already had to do I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few sore bodies that need a rest. Maybe a managed or rested out is on the cards

I really do feel for Robertson at the moment, somewhat the forgotten man to a degree. I am sure the coaching staff are reassuring him that he is a big part of our plans. He has the footy mongrel we need and I thought last year his disposal began to improve noticeably.

I suppose it is a good position to be in that he hasn't got into the team yet and he is the type of player who would give an honest account of himself wherever you put him.

Taylor has lost a bit of form hasn't he? I think he has earned the chance to play his way back into form in the seniors.
Disagree. Taylors been poor for a few weeks now. Good player yes. But with beams matho and a few others coming in or thereabouts his spot isnt garunteed. Only thing i see lewy offering is speed. Even then he hasnt used it enough this season.

Bell has brought a bit of the mongrel into the lineup and I guess he has replaced Nick to a degree?

As we all hear so often, every club needs more than 22 players ready to go.

He definitely has a place, there are any number of spots he could slot into. Maybe he could replace C.Beams on half back.

Temptataion of course is to rush Schache back.

But why???

The structure we had today actually worked pretty well. We were only one or two dodgy umpiring calls, a stretcher and a bit of luck away from a famous win At least half the match was played in drizzle/rain and even the Sydney Bondi Billionaires in Franklin and Tippett had trouble taking marks.

The match was decided not so much on superior marking but on Buddy's freakish ability to kick 2 or 3 goals from general/broken play that you would not expect any other player in the AFL to land once a season.

Does anyone seriously think that young Schache was going to make a difference between a loss and a win today? Yes he's got class and ability but (at this stage) he's no Buddy Franklin.

Tough trip to Adelaide coming up against what will be a rejuvenated Port.

I'd give the young man another week off, play him in the NEAFL and have him primed for a huge effort against the Pies at home in Round 8.
Hes our best contested mark and best key forward...he plays.

Taylor should be run through the centre a bit...thats his go.

No point playing Schache in the NEAFL

Midfield won't get anything to him, he's clearly an AFL level forward already

We could have used his leads up the ground yesterday.

Robertson played really well on the wing in some games last year and showed that he is more than capable of being a good player at AFL level. He has a great attitude and I have no doubt he will continue to work hungrily for a spot in the senior side.

We have a good group of players waiting in the wings outside of the 22 that lined up against the Swans: Dayne Beams, Josh Green, Josh Schache, Marco Paparone, Tom Cutler, Rhys Mathieson, Nick Robertson.

No disrespect to Dawson or Mayes as I like them both but in the context of this week and the game just gone against the Swans DBeams>Mayes and Paparone>Dawson. If we had those changes in place for the Swans game we probably would have won. They'll be handy acquisitions against Port.

Paperone comes in for Dawson
Beams (if ready) comes in for Claye, or Sam (I would like to see Hanley moved to HBF)
Lewy is on his last legs - needs a good one but has runs on the board.

edit - I forgot Schache ....Lewy may be rested

Schache for McStay, Paps for Dawson Beams for Mayes. After watching the first 3 qtrs of Swans game, McStay just isnt doing enough. Schache provides just as much in the air, but he works hard up the ground and sets up play. McStay is too much of a 1 shot player. Gets a good jump at it, but then he is out of the contest. Way too fumbly at ground level as well. Like him in defense a lot more.

Having to push players out of the team you dont want to shows depth. Mayes and Dawson dont need to be dropped, but there are simply better players available. Squiz id persist with. Has had a few quiet weeks, but he is an outside link player. Swans game wasnt good for that, and we didnt win enough ball vs the Dogs. He is a compliment player, he will have a good game off the back of winning contested ball and clearances. Wet weather meant we just kicked long instead of apreading to the outside.

Think Squiz keeps his place until Green is ready to come back.

In: Beams, Paparone, Schache
Out: Dawson, 2 of Mayes/C Beams/McStay
C Beams is very lucky that Cutler's injured. Looks ok when he goes near the ball. The rest of the time, he's the most invisible player in the side. Will probably stay in for structural reasons and little else, 10 disposals a game isn't anywhere near good enough even for a small defender these days.

I thought he was really good for the first quarter and a half, tackled well and went hard physically. Largely unsighted after that unfortunately.
