With respect, this is just wrong...on so many levels.

- McGinitty put the fear of God into an AFL player?? What? How? He is hard at it sure. But apart from say, our Jetta, there aren't too many players who would be scared of a bit of bruising. He certainly won't be scaring anyone with his skill level.
- In terms of pressure, Cripps offers just as much if not more.
- in terms of skill Cripps offers waaay more.
- Cripps is slightly out of form, but I didn't think he had a bad game. It's tough for small forwards when your big mates are marking everything coming I50. All you can do is apply pressure. Clear the space by providing leads that open up space, play your role in the defensive set ups and hope you snag a goal here or there. Tick. Tick. Tick and Tick.
- If McGinnity is who we consider to be our next best small forward that can help us win a GF, we are seriously F****d.
- I mean we have seen what Ginners offers. It is not much. Certainly no where near what Cripps offers (at his best). If we are to go down the path you suggest, I'd rather we tried players who haven't had a crack at it yet (or not much of it). Karpany?? Note, have no idea how he is going in WAFL/Reserves. Bennell?? Although we have tried him and he was a bit ho hum. Bit too fumbly and seems like his body plays quicker than his mind can keep up.
- Ginners also has a head like a three day punch drunk Irish beer hall bare knuckle brawler. My daughter's don't like him. ;)

Please no McGinnity. Ever.

With McGinnity, it's not a simple black and white skillset comparison (I know I'm leaving myself open with that one, but take my point). When you look at the Hawthorn flag teams, in terms of physical presence, you've got Hodge, Lewis, Mitchell, Burgoyne, among others. When we played at Geelong a couple of weeks ago, we got pushed around by Selwood, Danger, these kind of guys, and we looked a bit like the u/13's playing the u/16's. I agree that Cripps isn't that far out of form, but if you look at that physical presence that you need to win grand finals, in our midfield/forward line, it's a bit light on in that department.

We've got Priddis, who doesn't have a malicious bone in his body, Shuey, Masten, Hutchings, Hill, Cripps and Le Cras, who all lack the presence of like an Embley or a Peter Wilson type. There's Yeo, but he hasn't been getting into it away from home. And it seemed quite evident in the GF last year when the Hawks took hold of the game.

Even a guy like Worsfold didn't actually do that much, but his presence in the team affects the overall vibe of it. That physicality is a subtle aspect, but if you look at successful teams in the past, it's a common thread. Plus they can always drop him back if he's really not fitting in, I don't think it should that big a deal to bring in and out a few players throughout the season.

Cripps has been in our worst couple every game this year. His tackling pressure is non existent, he's not winning the footy and he's not kicking goals so we'd lose nothing replacing him with McGinnity. Redden and Yeo are the other two who are easily replaceable based on form. In terms of their outputs are easily replaced by the likes of Cole, Nelson, Adamson - perhaps even Lamb. Too comfortable some of these blokes.
Adamson has the body size and speed to replace Redden, has been playing a similar role in the WAFL ,averaging well over20 possessions and almost a goal a game.

McGinnity wouldn't provide any more physicality than Cripps. They are the same size and play a similar style game Cripps just has more talent.

If the sore players pull up well than no need for changes as much as I'd like to see Xavier Ellis return.

Presuming we miss Wellingham and Darling I'll say Nelson/ Ellis and Lamb replace them, McInnes maybe but we need to reward Lamb also...

Reward lamb for being a lazy campaigner? Lazy lambs are sacrificial

Big Frase ahead of Lambo. Will allow Naita to spend less than 50% TOG [emoji14]

I think I understand what you're getting at, and I agree that as a team we lack a hard edge or physicality. We're not 'unsociable'.

There are a few players who have some mongrel Lycett, Nelson, Shuey (although he has been reigned in after his brain fades) and funnily enough Cripps. So I think your call to replace Cripps with McGinnity makes even less sense.

The thing with those guys you mentioned for the Hawks and Cats and even Whoosha is that it is/was backed up by ability and/or skill. They all contribute at an exceptional level and have mongrel to boot. It's a swagger they can carry. It's a toughness they can back up with action. They aren't just tough guys out there to hurt the opposition.

McGinnity has toughness sure, but he is hard pressed just making the team.

But I take your point. We don't really seem to have an unsociable, hard edge to our game.

Selection is a matter of :
1. Replacing those who are injured or who are in the needing a rest
2. Sending a message for those who did not perform well
3. Retaining players who did their job well
4. Rewarding the players not in the side who are pushing hard at training and WAFL
5. Getting the balance right in terms of experience and development

and what most people fail to look at when making a big statement

6. Reviewing the opposition and seeing where their strengths and weaknesses are and understanding the right match ups.

So selections on above criteria
1. Injury worries from what I saw on Sunday are Darling and Wellers. Not sure who else and will find out more mid week.
2. Non performers - no passengers on Sunday but I personally want to see more from McKenzie, Redden and Cripps. Their 2016 has been a bit disappointing. It felt better with Le Cras spending more time in the forward line and hence Cripps is spending more as a midfielder and not setting the world alight but still a pass mark.
3. Most of the team did their job well against St Kilda.
4. Rewarding training and WAFL form - Barrass has been knocking at the door all season, Nelson has responded beautifully in EP and showing he can deliver in the midfield, Jetta did the right thing but it is only 1 game so possibly too early, McGinnity has apparently been really good at training and pretty good at EP and Cole has been great along side Barrass.
5. Love to see Cole given a chance but would probably wait until the following week against the Suns. Lamb is a little inconsistent still.

6. Port. They are missing quality talls in Lobbe, Ryder, Schulz and Carlile. Only other critical person in/out is Robbie Gray and he is a test.
That means we can make changes at the selection table if we want as we have height to our advantage. Playing the same 22 and ignoring who you are up against is insane.
. Their forward line is easily covered and we could decide to move McGovern up forward if Darling is injured. Problem if Wellers is out is who to play on Wingard.
. Their defence is small with only Jonas (188 cm) and (Hombsch (193 cm) needing to cover Kennedy, Lycett and Darling. We would want to continue to expose their lack of height.
. Trengrove in the ruck means we start with a massive advantage and we should dominate the centre bounces assuming NicNat/Lycett play.

Main focus for me will be extracting the ball from winning clearances. Overall a little concerned on our pace and going to tall (especially in defence).

My change is basically only Nelson in.
If no injuries, then give McKenzie a rest and play Nelson down back with him providing some rotation through the midfield.
If Darling injured, move McGovern to CHF and play Nelson down back with some rotation through the midfield.
If Wellers injured, bring in Nelson as a direct replacement.
Why rest Maca?
Looks like he really needs game time to get intouch.

Out: Whoever is injured / whoever is most likely to be the scape goat when we inevitably lose.
In: Every other young promising upstart who isn't delivering on a consistent basis rather than experienced depth who is bringing it each and every week.

With Jetta I know it sounds cliche and coach talk but I want to see a body of work from him at WAFL level before he returns, can't return on the back of a 29 touch game against the bottom of the ladder side. If it was quality opposition I'd maybe think differently but to bring him back would be silly and we'd gain nothing from that.

As for Port if Robbie Gray is fit he will return and we need to assign a shut down player to him, no if's but's or maybe's about it. He is there most damaging player, and if we can negate his influence or force him into hand balling more than kicking than that's a massive win for us.

My thoughts on how Port (if fit) will turn out

IN: R. Gray ~ Carlile
OUT: Ah Chee ~ Jonas/ Stewart

FB: Impey ~ Carlile ~ O'Shea/ Jonas
HB: Broadbent ~ Hombsch ~ Pittard

W: Byrne Jones ~ Polec
C: Wines
FOLL: Trengove ~ Ebert ~ Boak

HF: R. Gray ~ Dixon ~ Young
FF: Neade ~ Westhoff ~ Wingard

INT: Hartlett ~ Amon ~ Krakouer ~ Jonas/ Stewart

I agree he can be inconsistent and float in and out of games, do we have enough players like that already i don't know, but he has put games together at WAFL level which makes him look a level above the rest.

In the most recent game VS Swans he was a stronger performer than McInnes who would have had a helluva lot of forward supply during that game.

I'm also a bit fearful of the unknown with future with Tom in that if we don't give him enough chances we will miss out on keeping him long term and the pull to go back to Victoria will be stronger

When was the last time Lycett played an AFL game in Adelaide? I'm sure that he and his family are looking forward to this one, especially with Port not having a ruckman!

Expect him to tear them apart I reckon. :D

Reward lamb for what exactly?

Body of work and season long form in the 2's. Like i mentioned to RookiePick his most recent form doesn't stand out but Tom has put together a body of work which does make him a level above the rest at WAFL level.

Whether its versus Port or against the Suns (R10) I think we will see him at AFL level at some stage over the next fortnight.

A personal opinion viewpoint also where i think we need to get Lamb some AFL games because he won't sign a contract extension to play with the Royals when there are bites from Melbourne based clubs. I'm a McInnes fan but think its important to give Lamb some chances also.

I only have the televised EP games to go off and the WAFL reports here so it's possible he is going better than my impression. I know the televised games he looked like CBF doing anything defensive. That is just no good for our press based game plan.

I think Lamb will be really good in time. I think he needs to probably just grow up/mature a bit. He has the natural gifts, just needs to get his head into the professional space. He is going to be a very solid fella if he puts the hours in the gym.

Darling will get up

For mine I think Jetta might get picked

Befor you shoot me down we need his pace v port on a big ground ......I feel he might get picked

There's a logical arguement to keep him in the magoos for another week or two but I also feel we might need him

Redden out ...Jetta in .......

We don't 'need' anything Jetta has been offering right now.

v Claremont : 11K 4H 6M 1T 0.1
v Subiaco : 13K 10H 6M 2T 1.0
v South Freo : 15K 8H 6M 1T 4.1

v Peel : DNP
v West Perth : 7K 5H 3M 3T 1.2
v Perth : 9K 4H 8M 1T 5.0
v East Freo : 6K 9H 2M 0T 0.1
v Swan Districts : 15K 7H 8M 1T 2.0

Average : 11K 7H 6M 1T 2.1

I've bolded the games I've seen - the East Freo game was on TV, the rest I saw live

Granted his stats look reasonable for a player that has spent large chunks of time up forward with stints in the midfield usually on a wing. When playing forward he hasn't been the main target and the majority of his goals have been joe the goose handballs over the top, some of which have been the result of hard running by Lamb, others not so much.

The overall impression of his season so far is a talented but often times lazy footballer who doesn't work hard enough off the ball to provide defensive pressure or unrewarded running to position to create space/provide a target for team mates coming out of defence. He's too willing to sit off a contest waiting for a handball receive than push in and put his body on the line to win a hardball

Promoting him now would be a mistake because his effort doesn't justify it and gifting games to a player on the basis that they want to stop him from potentially leaving sends a poor message to the rest of the playing group. Tom Cole has done far more to earn a spot without luck and he's just signed a contract extension - I want players like him on the list and not peahearts that snatch it because they aren't getting games

This assessment is spot on

Yeah it was the best game we have played all year so no need for drastic changes this week.

Probably the one I'm keeping an eye on is Schofield as his still down on form this year.

No changes. Like to see Jetta prove consistency in the WAFL a bit more. Glad Simmo has finally bite the bullet and done what's right for the club.

One thing I will say is Masten has well and truely taken his spot on the wing over the last few weeks so we don't need Jetta in the midfield at all.
If he comes back he needs to change his position to either become a forward crumber or a rebound small defender.

A lot easier to take a forward crumbing position as I'm not convinced yet we have the right mixture down there.
