Changes Vs. Saints

Ready or not it's J-MAC time, don't care who goes out for him, just care that he plays in the next 2-3 weeks.

Apparently he killed it in the first half in the VFL today, kicking 4 in a half.

I say go small in the forward line against the Saints, so leave out one of Fraser, Brown, Anthony or Cloke, and bring in MaCarthy.

So my ins/outs now would be;

In: MaCarthy, O'Bree, Presti
Out: Ball, Johnson, Reid (if not Ball, then another tall forward)

Can't see Ball being dropped, but his disposal efficiency was at 50% today, that's just terrible when you've had it 18 times, and StKilda will know how to exploit him next week.

I Thought it was more his decision making than anything, constantly trying to hit up very tough short targets.

Ball was down, but only 1 or 2 players were up. His grunt work will be important next week.

I think he needs to work with his limitations and become a player whom uses it 80% by hand rather than looking to hit a short moving target like Nathan Buckley.

Ball shouldn't and won't get dropped, second game for the team, I know this doesn't effect your kicking but we knew he wasn't a strong kicker when we got him and his output in games is only going to increase. And even though his efficiency was down, I don't think his errors hurt us as much as a lot of others did.
I just like that when he tackles someone he puts them to the ground and regularly puts his head over the ball. Saints play a tough game and Ball is an animal in close, very much needed next week along with O'bree.

I know we won, but Jack Anthony and Luke Ball have been pretty ordinary for 2 weeks now. Reid and Johnson go out for sure, and I want Dawes or MaCarthy to play next week, they were both very good in the VFL.

In: Presti, O'Bree, Dawes/MaCarthy.
Out: Johnson, Reid, Anthony/Ball.
Ball wasn't ordinary against the Dogs at all, he had 24 Score involvements.

What I would like to see:

Out: Cloke Reid Johnson

In: Presti Rusling O'Bree

As much as I am not a fan of Rusling, I would rather him in the team over Cloke, even though Anthony has been horrible as well, at least if he marks it inside 50 he is more than likely gonna kick it.
Rusling could add an extra dimension to our forward line.

Trav hasn't played a decent game since Round 14 last year against Essendon, he offers nothing to the team, everytime he marks it he just turns around and bombs it long doesn't even look, and who knows maybe some time in the VFL will get him to pull his finger out and recapture that form of 2007. Hopefully!

Even if Presty wasn't injured we don't have anyone for Riewoldt so I'm going to put something out there.

Bring in Dawes and put Travis to CHB on Roo, if we are lucky it could be the making of him and run him into form.

I agree with Cloke to CHB. However, I don't agree with your ins.

Out: Johnson, Brown, Reid (reluctantly)
In: Dawes, McCarthy, Presti

Piss off! He was one of our best! I was at the match and he was fantastic!

You don't know what you're on about!:thumbsd:

Cant agree more. He was fantastic today. If it wasn't for Thomas at the dying seconds we wouldn't of won. Ben Reid went down, Hes man was left free. Thomas had to find a way to hold down 2 opponents and did it well. He ended up finding the ball and clearing it out of defence, Unfortunately it went to Melbourne but the time this all happend. he had more help with Sidebottom. And wala we won the game!

B: Toovey - Prestigiacomo - Maxwell
HB: Shaw - O'Brien - Wellingham
C: Didak - Swan - Thomas
HF: Davis - Cloke - Beams
F: Lockyer - Anthony - Medhurst
FL: Jolly - Pendlebury - Ball
INT: Sidebottom - O'Bree - L. Brown - Fraser

I really like the Cloke to CHB idea. Reid was fine yesterday and Presti will not play next week, so that'll have to stay for now.

Out: BJ, L.Brown
In: O'Bree, Dawes

Cloke on Riewoldt, Dawes to CHF.

Having said that, this is exactly the kind of game we lose. We will be intimidated by the Saints' skill and physicality and their win against North will have psychologically destroyed us. Fingers crossed, though.

Leigh Brown and Ben Reid can not be dropped, they were in our best10 players yesterday, although that's not saying a heap.

But late in the game, when we needed some big men to stand up, Leeroy and Reid did very well, with Brown acting as the CHF (After cloke went missing again) and Reid making 2 crucial spoils and 2 clearances out of the backline late.

Even if Presti plays, Reid and Brown should also, as it was the forwards and senior players that let us down big time yesterday.

Why wouldn't Didak be dropped, or Luke Ball, they were both absolutely woeful, why would you drop Leigh Brown or Reid, who both did their jobs all day.

They didnt play through Reid's man and when they did he was outbodied more often then not.

Presti also said he would be right for next week, so out Reid in Presti, and this will get me into some trouble but im starting to think Reid will only ever be a tall flanker

Ball wont be dropped and nor will didak, ball didnt kick well we knew that but at least he stuck his head over it and tackled alot of our middle didnt even do that.

I was at the game, sitting behind the Punt Rd goals, and from what I saw Reid was our best defender for the day. The reason I'd drop Leroy is that he didn't appear to do anything, either good or bad. Just read the stats and apparently he had 10 disposals, 3 tackles and 5 frees against! If he was successfully throwing his weight around like he was against the Doggies I didn't see it, and it apparently had no effect against the much younger Dees. In my fantasy tactical move which will never happen under Malthouse, Cloke would go to CHB and we'd need to free up a spot for a tall (Dawes) but in reality I doubt much will change. Not a hater, as I trust the guys in charge, but I'd definitely see some merit in a shake-up.

Cloke is one-paced. You can't have one-paced players thrust into defense for the first time in years, especially against one of the best two forwards in the league.

Harry needs to go to him, and if he gets beat in the air, so be it.

Also agree with Opti re: Reid, I'm a fan but I saw nothing positive about his performance yesterday.

Yes Harry, Presti and Maxwell are our only options on Riewoldt and they all have areas where roo will beat them.

Also this cloke to CHB bullshit is wearing thin, Cloke is a CHF/FF and thats it final, isnt fast enough for CHB, isnt defensive enough for CHB and will get outpointed quite badly at CHB. In short he is NOT A CHB

If MM for some reason decides to play Cloke on Riewoldt, which I hope he doesn't, he has just gifted Riewoldt 5+ goals and conceded the game.

Does anyone remember when Pagan put Fev on Gerhig as punishment and the G-train kicked 6 goals, thats what happens when forwards play in defence on the best forwards in the game with very little training for the role. The only place Cloke should play this week is the reserves and bring in Dawes or Brown to CHF - they will do better than our current talls.

People calling for Sidebottom to be dropped were not at the game yesterday or simply have NFI......

Well the coaching staff certainly isn't going to upset the structure of the backline. Reid seems like such a natural match-up for Riewoldt. He has the legs and he plays the ball. Riewoldt is not a body player so it feels like the right match-up. Plus I think it's worth the investment into Reid. He needs a break out game, could be his chance.
Simple changes are out Johnson (inj), Anthony, for O'Bree and Dawes.

Alot of calls to drop Cloke/Jack, however Leroy Brown needs to go before any of them do.

Jack may have a shit game but still contribute on the scoreboard when the team needs important goals.

Cloke is our CHF. Just won't happen. Also, his knee injury may be hurting his "lateral movment" but he still better than Leroy.

Leroy was great against the Dogs in that, everything he did, whilst unco and with some lucky breaks. However, realistically, if he is going to play forward, he needs to be kicking goals. At least one a game. Nathan Brown or Dawes would be far better options, particularly Dawes who is far more "natural" than him.

Anyway, a week is a long time in footy and if we get up and beat the Saints the tune will change once again.

Reid had better games than Maxwell, Toovey and Shaw (arguably Harry). He only got beaten two times that I can recall. One was just a super quick centre clearance where they hit Newton on the lead, very tough to defend. The second was caused by a horrible 3rd man up effort by Maxwell. They didn't go through him a whole heap, but towards the end of the match he was left deep in a few 1 vs 1's and did well. Was clean clearing the ball out too.

If Presti doesn't come up, he has to play. If Presti comes up, I would still like him to play. There will be a suitable match up for him against the Saints.
