What about:

Varcoe, Chapman out
Prismall, Stokes in
Rooke emergency

Varcoe, whilst very good from a pressure perspective and a rare talent to steal the ball and do the exciting stuff, maybe stokes who will be in and under + plus defence would be a better option. Prismall then in for extra midfield spice and allows for Tenace and his running ability (which I believe is getting better....so is his kicking.....sort of :o). Rooke an emergency (depending on the day - if wet and windy definate inclusion).

Thoughts??

Bit harsh to drop anyone from Sunday's game IMO. Only changes that should be made are enforced ones. Varcoe did well on Sunday, as did the whole team, so his form doesn't warrant getting omitted.

I would only bring in Stokes at this stage as the replacement for Chappie. If Egan can't play then bring in Josh Hunt.

I like Prismall a lot, so it's hard to exclude him...

Thompson is confident Matthew Egan (corked thigh) will play, but captain Tom Harley still has some work to do with his finger injury.

"He's a genuine chance ... it (the finger) is still quite stiff - between now and Sunday, he's got to be able to move it a lot more," he said.

And maybe that is why the Cats fail in so many ways - because it is too harsh. Maybe they need to make harsh decisions for the betterment of the team as a whole.

Yes Varcoe has been playing well.....but will he stand up to the pressure that will be applied by West Coast. He is only 18 and still alot to learn. Selwood has maturity, Hawkins has the bigger body so they should be able to apply themselves OK.

Varcoe needs to be able to cope with the physical pressure that will applied to him - will he stand up to it???? Stokes will he has a bigger body and plays in that sort of role required. Prismall has more experience and a more developed body from 2 more preseasons than Varcoe.

So what will it be "harsh" or best for the team???

How is Varcoe going to get the experience against better palyers if we drop him lets not hide him chance for him to step up. He is starting to do somethings that resemble the bloke who used to wear that number once.

You make some excellent points, as usual. While I'm not picking individual players to replace others or whatever in this context, I would like to say about Varcoe that he has been making extraordinary 1 percenters around stoppages, most especially with tackling. I'm pretty happy with him at the moment. In fact, I'd say he's exceeded my expectations, so if possible, I'd like to see him included.

He has a long way to go before that. He does things the great one couldn't and vice versa - not even worth comparing.

It is not about him (the problem with the "culture" of Geelong right there). It is about what is best for the team against any given opponent. And against WC I do not think he is physically or mentally ready.

You make some valid points but whats does Bomber say " Travis you have been improving and your defensive pressure is getting better but have a spell this week as we dont think your ready yet for the "big games" after having a solid game against Richmond.

Stop it you're making me blush :o

I agree - but I see the pressure applied by the WC "bullies" as being the key to his overall success on this day - do not think he is up to that yet.

As above - nothing to do with what he does - but what is done to him

Varcoe needs to stay.. that touch of unpredictability and excellent defensive pressure in the forward half is what we need. I don't think you can hidde players on the grounds of what will be done to them, I think it is character building (site Bartel & Jnr's debut against Essendon as an example ... Bartel kept getting bashed up real good only to keep getting up again).

I would like to see Stokes and/ or Byrnes come in (I know I'm in a minority there!) but I think that our loss of dash around the packs against the Roos cost us dearly. I still think Byrnes can improve and still offers alot to the team despite his deficiencies. Played a terrific game in the twos last week and his disposal was very good.

Shit news but at least we have some type of replacement with either Prismall or Stokes. It had to be this game that Chappy can't come up for, but so long as he's not out for long we'll be alright.

Will be a huge test for us whether he's in or not so perhaps this injury will be a better test of our mettle.

I'll ignore that Byrnes part :P

All fair points, but..............let me be a little stereotypical here.

Many young, skinny, aboriginal players take a little bit more time to develop into a full package type player. Sure they have uber skill from day one, can flash in and out and do things I can only dream about, as Varcoe is beginning to show (the mark he took where he flicked it up and forward - pure genius). Now thinking along that stereotypical line - what is the first thing opposition sides, let me rephrase that, good opposition sides do to that type of player? What happens to said player the week after, and so on and so forth, they can go missing for longer periods of time.

Not saying it will happen, I'm saying it might happen. So following that train of thought and knowing that there is a possiblity that he will go into hiding (again through no fault of his own - awe and perceived fierce oppostion can do that to people), maybe making us one man down overall. What would you do?

Personally if I was going to play him, I would be on him all week telling him what sort of pressure will be applied, I would get stuck into him the need for "courage" under fire. I would also put a cracker up the behinds of a few that play around him, that we are all aware, do not stand up for their teammates all too often - and make sure that they do - especially forthe "young uns".

Remember Varcoe is very very good at harrassing the opposition and magnifying their mistakes, how will he handle that happening to him? And be it a bad experience, will it affect him for a long period of time?

These are all hypotheticals of course, I would love nothing more than to see the young man dance a merry jig over those Blue and Yellow jumpers. Just concerned for his future input if WC actually do what I think they will do, whereas I have no qualms with the likes of Stokes or Pris. Their development is much further along.

Thoughts?

give the djidi a run

This kid will be ace - can't wait until he debuts :)

Yep, i think he is the type we should use rather than a Prissa/ Stokes type. They are very similar players. Djidi is different in every aspect. He is lightning fast and his skills are sublime. Him and varcoe pairing up will be dangerous. Plus their defensive skills will keep players like Jones and Waters accountable.

On SEN this morning it was said that Bomber confirmed Chappy's omission - I'd go for Prismall. Don't believe any of the Robert Walls rubbish that West Coast are due for a slump. They have had a tough time at S.S. over the last 4 years - and we handed them the win on a platter last year! I was not over-impressed with Tenace and I did not think that Maxie Rooke looked quite ready. Stokes was good in the VFL and must be considered with Prismall. This game will be a real test for us.

agreed. deserves a run and an injury is probably the only way to get into the side after the big win. give the boy a chance.

Based on his performances right now - he needs a little bit more time - is struggling under pressure to pick the ball up at ground level and goes missing for extended periods of time. Does some very special things still, but just a bit of consistency in getting the ball and BAM he will be in and become a huge asset.

See him coming in towards the mid - end of the year.

Just watching the VFL replay at the moment. Agree Djidi is a little way off being ready at the moment. Stokes looked good and Byrnes infront of goal on his left was good but their competition didn't provide much resistance. Gardiner looked good :| I don't know who we'd bring in for Chappy, my vote would be for Stokes as he's a harder in and under player than our other options. Swap him between playing as a small forward and out of the middle as a rover with Gaz.
