Was anyone at the game yesterday to give feedback on Chapman? In terms to game time ect.

It is clear that Chapman is one of the greats of the GFC, and in my opinion id say one of the greats of all time, he has had a stellar career.

It is now clear he had an injury effected year last year. This season there has been several write ups on him, with him quoting he has had a injury free pre season and feels better then ever bla bla bla.

That in mind, with anyone at the game yesterday what are your thoughts?

I listened to it on KRock and everytime he went to the pine the commentators would say "Chapman hobbling off". Does anyone think he has been injured? or age an issue here? Is anyone aware of how much game time he had , due to his 8 possessions? I know its his first game however this is very uncharacteristic even in a NAB game.

Have we seen the best of this man if this is or isn't the case? I hope not!

First hitout for all the senior boys, no need to be to critical. Am sure they are happy to just start getting a few miles under the belt in game situations.

Saying that, I think with the emergence of Bundy and Duncan to the midfield rotation, we have to look at putting Chapman back into a forward / flank role. He will be more effective for us there. He still has a lot to give Chappy, but i haven't seen enough evidence in the last 12 months to suggest that the midfield is his best position nowadays.

really struggled to impact the game early from what i could see. it was his first hit-out so i guess he needs to be given a little slack, but to me having him in the midfield makes us very one-paced and yeah, he was basically one of the witches hats that Martin and Cotchin were dancing around/ running away from in the first half.

for the last year he's looked the most likely of our players to be past it. there were others like Corey and Kelly who were getting smashed yesterday as well, but Corey, for one, was quite effective when moved to the backline, and Kelly can be moved around as well. Chapman can only really play mid or forward and to me he's too slow and unaccountable to play mid, so i'd like him put back to the forwardline in a swap for Christensen who can play inside but has pace as well.

he was cleary carrying something all last year, and has said that he was under par.

he'll bounce back, write Chappy off at your own peril. Whether he should play more forward and less in the midfield as the young guys come through is yet to be seen.

just a gut feeling, but I reckon he'll have a "Mooney-esque" last year. Will play between 10 and 17 games, and they'll use it as a chance to bring a younger mid/forward in slowly. His best is clearly behind him...

I would be playing him as an explosive forward pocket for the majority of a game with a brief stint in the midfield.

Seeing him run off half-back at his stage of his career is madness.

I think he'll still be critical for us in the big games, and they'll need to manage him to keep him fresh for that, i.e. I wouldn't be surprised if he only plays 18 games or so and is rested in the run to the finals.

I agree with SJ too, I'd play him in the majority as a forward, with only brief stints through the midfield. I think he offers us the most there and is most needed there.

A Brad Johnson late-career role.

Spot on. Particularly since he's the best shot for goal in the team (along with Jimmy also). Makes sense to play him close to the sticks 90 % of the time.

but without being so selfish .....

he adds so much grunt I struggle with the thought of him not being in the team

Him and Hawkins out of the square would be devastating! Both strong, great overhead and relatively mobile for their respective sizes.

He has the belief he can continue for many more years.

He actually said, unless something goes terribly wrong, he'll play on after 2012.

Better trust the man himself, than someone's judgement on a NAB Cup game.

This! :thumbsu:

Can't see the point in playing a player like Chappy in the NAB cup.

More a risk of an injury than any benefit of potential match fitness considering the way they all jogged around yesterday.

For mine, Chapman was his most effective in 2007-09. Why? Because he played the majority of the season in the forward line. He was a lead up target, a small forward, and a defensive forward who always kept a contest. I haven't been a fan of his increased midfield time and his goal output has dropped off from 35 goals to 20 which to me is a massive waste as his value in midfield is not as much as his potential goal scoring power.

As he is nearing the twilight of his career we can preserve his peak over a much longer period if he spends more time in the forward line. He is simply more valuable to us there, especially with the rise of Duncan and Bundy.

Quality observation:thumbsu: I agree 100%

Gee some supporters are quick to write off top players. Remember the Eagles game last year at Subiaco where they kicked 9 goals in a row -some supporters were saying its an end of an era blah blah . Chapman in the 2nd half of that game was outstanding -that game was less than 1 year ago

Don't know that he's been written off, but the consensus is, and it's a no-brainer, that he should spend the majority, if not all, of his last season or 2/3 as a small gun forward that he is.

Hit the nail on the head.

While you could make an argument that 2010 was his best season, I think the fact that we have so many players who can take Chappy's midfield minutes and limit the impact his body takes from crashing through the congestion in the stoppages. These sort of decisions could make the difference between Chappy finishing up this year, or kicking on for one or two more.

got an eery feeling we all see Chappy produce something similarly epic to that '09 goal' before he hangs up the boots.

His career has been scripted perfectly and now we move into Act 3. Can't wait to see how this one ends :thumbsu:
