Because against better defenders it will allow them to get a spoil in. He was still shaky overhead today but I think when he needed to go for overhead marks he did and when he had time to take them on the chest he went with the more reliable option. If he does this i'm fine with the chest marks. He still needs to improve overhead however. But i'm loath to be too critical when he worked so hard and showed so much today.

Yeah I still think he is Shackey overhead but it's getting better

Methinks Rocca is being channeled through Dawes via some sort of black magic conjured up by Bucks in the coaches box. Wouldn't surprise me that they're dabbling in the dark arts. ;)

can't we just get excited over dawes without all the negative stuff. yes he has weaknesses but how about his strengths.

Agree he Played well and he does have Weaknesses but he does have a lot of Strengths

He was terrific, and with a bit more luck and a bit more seasoning (I'm thinking that shot on the run) could have been even more damaging. I was more disappointed for him after his fluffed chance because I really get the feeling that Dawes is a confidence player and 2.0 would have seen him "off to the races" so to speak. Still, he's had a cracking game, stuck some great marks (agree with TD that rag-dolling the Carlton player was awesome, as was the juggled mark in the last) and done more than enough to keep his spot and keep developing in the seniors. :thumbsu:

Arrrrr, forty dubloons says that be true.

Hahaha :thumbsu:

Question - why is everyone so down on his taking marks on his chest? Why does it matter where he takes them, so long as he takes them?

Means he meets the ball a split second early. The 20-30 cm gap between hands in front of the face and letting it come into the chest can make a world of difference against a gun defender with a good reach.

I just love our a structure when he is in. Gives Cloke more room too.

While JA is no doubt our best kicker for goal, Dawes provides so much more for our structure and brings other players into the game. He just creates a contest.

Actually it's more about the spill. If you drop it with hands in front means it falls in front of you and you can run on to it and give off a handpass. Drop it on the chest and it spills sideways or straight at your feet and that's welcome to turnover town mother f*****r

First half just finished on Fox, that was a seriously good performance. He was all over the place and really outmuscling the Carlton defenders. Go Dawes!

To all the Dawes doubters and Anthony afficianados, I have just
4 words - I TOLD YOU SO!!

Nah it isn't.

If you are dropping chest marks, it doesn't matter where the ****er falls, you shouldn't be playing seniors.

At least Dawes is taking chest marks, unlike Kozi from the saints. But yeah, he should go for the overhead a bit more - but that will develop over time.

Loved Dawes' game and loved the distance he put between himself and Leigh Brown as much as the disatance Beams and Sidebottom are putting between themselves and Lockyer/O'Bree. 3 premiership potential players in for 3 non premiership quality players out.

Way to go yet but now I am getting excited!

Grate game by Dawes today 3.4 will turn into 6.1 soon enough.:thumbsu:
Beating the blues is only better when we have two KPF's I have been a fan since he kicked 5 against Box Hill in 2008 and rag dolled Max Hudgton the week after (might be a bit over the top) but if he had kicked the first after 1/2 time and not hit the post at the start of the last. I would be not able to cope.

Lets have two more games of improvement. He is a better senior player than a reserves player. He is just needs to keep improving and we will.

I think the biggest positive is that he's combining nicely with Cloke. It looks to me like Cloke is enjoying having him out there. Yeah he made some errors and spilled the odd mark, but I liked Dawes game. Provided a real presence and target up forward with us and boy was it great to see him kicking the goals. I think the real test will be up against the gun defenders i.e. Lake/Scarlett. Top start by the big unit.

I was there and it was a rag doll all right. He monstered Hudghton in his first game.

I stood at the ground after that mark and called him Plugger the rest of the night.

There's the challenge for Dawesome - be our Plugger not just our Rocca.

Happy with his game today. Did his job, did some great things, and apart from one helicopter kick was OK shooting for goal.

Offers loads of Presence in the Forwardline and we look so deadly with two big forwards to contend with.

I am hoping Jack turns into a good Swingman for us though

I honestly think Josh Fraser is the one standing in Jack's spot.

Fraser gives us nothing up forward, but the problem for Jack was Fraser's second half today in the ruck was actually bloody good.

Plus I can't see a Jack for Josh swap happening, as if Fraser goes out over the next 2 weeks (injury) then Wood has to play against the 3 north rucks or Sandilands the following week.

Jack may just have to wait a while, I can still see a 3 man tall forward line, mainly because all 3 are different "beasts";

Cloke is a run hard, mark in front type of forward, who does his best work outside 50.

Dawes to me is a pure forward, maybe even a goal kicking CHF in the Jonathon Brown mould (1/2 as good would be nice).

Anthony is a plain lead and mark forward, who will get better also.

Long term I can see all 3 in the same forward line, but maybe not for a while yet.

I can see that happening too but does mean we will be too flat footed when they rebound out of defence? I tihnk 3 tall forward is inevitable but I can't see it happening anytime too. You are right about Fraser, I am someone who'ed always play two rucks in every game.

I'm inclined to agree with ya Matty. I just don't know if three talls in the forwardlines can work these days unless one of those talls is extremely quick and agile. Cloke and Dawes aren't and I don't think JA is that quick. I could be wrong though and if its the direction we go in I hope I'm very wrong.
