Roast Chris Dittmar - a shining example of all that is wrong with SA football.

I was more thinking about sports which are not a pure test of athleticism, but obviously require some level of athleticism to compete in. Not that it's an important debate or anything but I've always found it interesting to think about.

OK then, so basically you're talking about athletic non-athletes.:p:thumbsu:

I find it an interesting topic too, in fact one of the things I admire about Australian Rules Football is that it tests the human body on so many levels; strength, speed, stamina, agility, coordination, even leaping ability.

If you guys want a journo worth following, you can't go past Emma Quayle. I struggle to find a time where she has been wrong, her draft knowledge is astounding. I think she correctly picked about 70 of the 81 in order prior to the draft. She engages with you on Twitter and is happy to respond to questions and always maintains a true journalistic spirit ie she doesn't look to sensationalise and does all of the homework.

We would be far better off if she was our "Chief Football Writer" rather than the sloth we have now.

He has always struck me as not too bright. On all issues (not just sport) he has a strong fixed opinion with very little facts. Usually a sign of someone that doesn't think at a very deep level.

Agreed, sounds like they've pulled the average joe Port Supporter off the street, plonked him with a legend of the game and said "hey, talk about footy". The bloke doesn't even seem to try to provide a measured, unbias view, would much rather hear them pair Tredrea with Ricciuto, as much as I hated the bloke as a footballer, he does seem to provide a fair and balanced view.

Here's a tip - if you get so frustrated by what guys like Rowey, Cornes, or Chris Dittmar have to say...

...don't f-cking listen to the radio.

Ever since I plugged in my iPod, driving home from work never felt better.

Agreed. However it'd be great to have a footy/sports show that you can actually listen to. Its just a real shame that these guys can be so infuriating to listen to.

There is no denying that boxing is a grueling sport, however from what you guys have written I get the impression that where we really differ is in our definition of the word 'athlete'. I realise that other facets of human physical movement can be just as important, such as coordination and flexibility, but personally I tend to have a more traditional concept of an athlete in mind, with a heavy basis in three aspects; strength, stamina, and to a lesser extent agility. Which is why I'd probably regard the Ironmen triathletes as the pinnacle of athleticism, considering they have to perform a 3.86km swim, 180.25km bicycle ride, and a 42.2km run (equivalent of a Marathon) one after the other, all without stopping even once.

Totally agree, the Ironmen/women are amazing athletes, I have no idea how they can do what they do. Not big noting myself in any way, but I have run 3 marathons and each one has taken everything I had physically and mentally and have no idea the fitness and mental toughness it would take to swin 3.8km and ride 180km beforehand. Yeah those guys ang gals are almost superhuman.

It's more that he was just extremely opinionated and not afraid to tell people what he thought. Easy to see how that might come across as being a tool, haha.

My dad was playing state level squash around that era and he tells a story about how Dittmar would come out and practice every day. One day he asked one of the state teams there if he could practice against them. He took on every member of the squad, one after another, beat them all, then went back to doing drills by himself. Dude was a machine.

I've always thought squash players are some of the finest athletes in the world. It's an interesting debate actually, which sport requires the best athletes to be elite? I've always felt that it's #1 Boxing, and #2 Squash.

MMA/UFC? Great tanks, extremely flexible, huge power?

Edit- and speed

I haven't kept up with MMA for a while, is there a dominant martial art nowadays?

I always laugh when I hear about Nick Diaz because I used to know a guy called Nick Diaz at Uni except instead of being a MMA fighter he was a conspiracy theorist nutcase.

Well nick Diaz ( the fighter ) is a pothead who thinks "the man" is against him haha and yeh into his conspiracy theories. He is the fittest and one of the most exciting fighters however. There's not really a dominant style however the brazilians are doing very well.

I thought he was particularly loose and off the wall last night. He seems to be "better" when teamed up with Roo. Maybe the ratings are suffering. Anyway, did hear that redlegs are considering legal action after his comments about the salary cap last night.
He's better with Roo, because Roo smacks him down when he goes off half cocked. Jars is always half cocked and swings his opinions to what ever is popular. Never had an original thought in his head. So Ditz can fly off and Jars will just follow. "yeah Ditz, you tell 'em Ditz. They should ban this shouldn't they Ditz".
