If Jamie Elliott had been fit all year, and Fasolo hadn't had his problems, we would have been finals contenders. The margin was that fine.
No we wouldn't. We Couldn't beat Essendon with them last week. They improve our forward line but our midfield is still shallow for class, our backline is still terrible, we still don't have a viable KP forward (hopes for Moore but he hasn't had a strong year) and our game plan is still confused and important.

We are not Elliot and Fasolo off finals we are 2 drafts, some quality trading, attracting quality free agents and a good coach off anything worth getting excited about.

Yes onsuch things winning and losing hinges.

It wasn't to be, but say three more games should have been won, Afl Giants, Bevo Dogs, Melbourne and we'd be
8-7 and hitting an oil patch but season in control.

But on such things the season swings.

But we didn't, and here we are.

Lol.

Just no.

Wells in the next 2 years needs to play 40 games for us to break even, don't think it would have been a big issue had Mayne not been recruited as well, they seem to get bundle in conversation.

Still really don't know what they were thinking with Mayne?

That could be one for the footy shows in 20 years time.

Clearly they thought they were close to altermate success and just needed some experience in certain rolls to make that step, how wrong did they get it!
But even if they were right the amount of dollars and length of contracts were way to much.

Guess part of it would have been that they didn't require draft picks.
Wells fills a clear need in terms of genuinely high level disposal and smarts. Duration and volume of contract lunacy. Assume that was what was needed to prise him away from NM, but we should have just dropped the pursuit.
Mayne a a bit of a head scratcher given his continually declining output. Understand the idea of having a forward who helps prevent the ball exiting our forward 50 too easily, just doesn't seem able to fulfil the brief and his accuracy in terms of kicking for goal seems gone. Contract volume / duration a mystery.

I thought wells was one of norths forced retirees.

Not sure what i'd do with Mayne, paying him out might be the way to go, i have a question for those in the know, if we're not paying 100% of our cap this year (and i'd be shocked if we were) can we add his potential payout to this years cap?

There's no point keeping him on the list if he isn't going to play in the seniors, better off using his spot to draft an extra kid this year.

I'm all for paying him out and opening up a position for some young kid on min wage. Best way to go about it.

Still think having the two names of this thread in the same sentence. Poor form.

Shakes head.....

Shouldn't be in the same page, chapter, book, let alone same sentence

So has it been established yet why Mayne was offered such a big contract?

Surely there wasn't exactly a lot of competition for him from other clubs and offers that Collingwood had to go higher and beat...and it was clear Mayne's Freo career was done.

As I understand it, we could pay him out this year but the per year amount still comes off the TPP for each year of the contract rather than as a 1 off this season. Mayne to retire is the only way around that as far as I'm aware but would he want to retire and forego $420k a year for the next 3 years?

Well that sucks, may as well try him as a defender then i suppose.

The fact that a player is taken as a free agent changes the salary cap impact.

If we paid out Adams for instance the salary cap hit would be taken when the payment was made.

When you sign a free agent you commit to the salary cap according to the disclosed contract. That's why Sydney have a problem if Frankllin retires tomorrow even if he doesn't want to get paid a cent.

If we exit Mayne we still have the contract impacting our cap as if he was still in the list. Free agents as free as they are made out be.

Not so.
He might have seen the writing on the wall.
Didn't like his mates exit, thought he might as well set up a tent and get going

Wells is in our best five players and hasn't lost his pace. It's obvious why we got him. The alternative was to fill the spot with a player we didn't rate and we have to pay the (soon to be increasing) salary cap each year anyway. May as well use it on quality.

Mayne....

I think we've done a deal with Freo on this one which involved us overpaying Mayne on a lengthy contract to increase the compensation that they got. There is someone on their list who we want this year and who wants to get to us. I think they will count the compensation last year at part of the consideration and will not make it difficult for the player to get to us. Who that player is, I have no idea.

I am really hoping that there is something like this going on behind the scenes.
