For someone who played so many games, and even coached, how can he possibly be SO clueless about football? It’s truly staggering how a guy who’s been so involved with the game has so little understanding of it. He’s always trying to break the big rumours, always talking up a particular player (he said the Crows HAD to go after McDougall), always talking down another (Meesen).
Anyone read his Crows player rankings for 2007? What a load of rubbish it was, here’s a few snippets:
• Rhett Biglands listed as a ‘Must Keep’. 30 y/o, average at the best of times ruckman coming off a knee reconstruction is listed as must keep despite the fact we have 3 young ruckmen.
• Brett Burton listed as 'Untouchable’. Yeah? At 29, with dodgy knees, coming off the worst season of his career, he’s an untouchable according to Bones. I’d trade him without a second thought.
• Ivan Maric listed as 'On Notice’. How many ruckman look the goods before they turn 22, heck even 23, 24? Injury set him back this season but his ruckwork continues to impress and he also kicked 5 goals in 6 games. He’s on notice, Biglands is must keep. Work that one out...
• Andrew McIntyre listed as ‘Must Keep’. IMO at best he’s placed on the rookie list next year, if not then delisted. Got height and can take a mark, but his pace, awareness, skills at ground level and intensity are all below par. Must keep though Bones?
• John Meesen. Has McDermott ever finished a sentence without adding how much he hates Meesen?
• Bryce Campbell. According to McDermott he needs a weapon to his game. His ball winning ability, ferocious tackling, skills level and competitive nature all add up to a very good player. Believe it or not, all are weapons Bones.
My word Chris, give it up, you're pieces are always disastrous.
