Delisted by Brisbane after only 2 years on the list and bottom-aged. I haven't seen much of him since he was drafted other than 2 underwhelming AFL games last year. Don't know who's decision this was or the full story, but perhaps worthy of discussion for a spot on the list in some way. Main reason I bring it up admittedly is that he's a South Aussie boy. Also apparently studies at UQ, so you'd think he has a good head on him.

188cm, medium defender/utility, athletic, wins a lot of ball, very good poise. I vaguely remember him playing a good game for Wests seniors before being drafted and he had a very good u18s champs. A lot of hype at the time and he's the type of player clubs seem to love these days. A little skinny which hasn't stopped him at junior level, but maybe has at Suncoast. Also suffered OP and a couple niggling injuries early this year IIRC. Perhaps the Lions know something about his body that we don't.

Thoughts? Someone with better insight than I?

I can't comment on what has happened to him in his time with Brisbane, but prior to him being drafted I was hoping that we would draft him.

When Brisbane took him I was very disappointed as I felt we had missed out on a local boy who would develop into a real talent.

Physically he looked like a Burton clone as a 17 year old. It's hard to believe that two years later he's delisted unless his body isn't up to the rigors of AFL.

Depending on his body he's worth investigating as it's hard to believe that a player could lose so much ability in such a short time.

Have to agree with Macca's comments .....looked a real talent

Maybe he's had trouble putting on weight? ......but he appeared very talented and he was taken reasonably early in the draft

WHAT???? Wow! I am legitimately shocked by this news. When I saw the thread title I immediately thought of the other Schmidt from the Swans but never did I expect Chris to be delisted. If you look back at my posts from 2006 draft day you will see that I was actually disappointed we took Tippett over him. Obviously the decision was the correct one but I haven't lost any faith in Schmidt's ability to play the game.

Adelaide, I beg you to go after Chris! I still believe he is an elite talent. He’s only 19, has only been in the system for two years so the upside is enormous. I don’t like to speculate but this decision must surely be off field related because why else would a rebuilding club like Brisbane delist a guy with such huge talent? Absolutely cannot get my head around why they would do such a thing.

Schmidt is a class player who has all the time in the world. He is very poised, has good disposal and has good height. Could be a gun. :thumbsu:

some insight; 2 years have passed on the list, hasn't shown what they were expecting of him, despite being bottom aged when picked...and with a very important draft coming up, he's got the chop. reminds me a bit of Sellar; though, Sellar is a KPP and high draft pick.

We haven't released any details on why he has been delisted. He did have OP for most of the season and didn't do so well in the Suncoast Lions team (reserves). I think he got delisted as we have too many players like him which are doing better than him, namely Macdonald, Adcock, Notting (if he gets kept), Harding, Corrie and Stiller. Also Voss is going through a cleanout of the club and perhaps Schmidt wasn't in his plans. I'd suggest that you pick him up in the rookie draft and see how he goes, he is far away from a senior game.

I never fail to be surprised by clubs that announce their delistings before the conclusion of trade week.

I mean they never know if Port or Adelaide would have offered a 4th rounder for him on the last day? Surely that's better than nothing since now you no longer have to use picks you trade for?

Because you would be naive to think clubs aren't sounding out or shopping players around before trade week.

I was a bit surprised with his delisting, but he really can't find the ball at AFLQ level. I do think he will end up on a rookie list somewhere though.

I hear Dangefield, Petrenko, Cook, Otten and Mackay are all looking to develop into our next tagger. It's all good.

Drummond i'm not sure how to take your comment

FWIW i agreed with your original comments about Schmidt

Brisbane will regret this. Very good player is Chris, was worthy of a first round pick when he got drafted - essentially one of SA's best juniors that year. I'd take him in a flash at the crows, certainly would be a very very good pickup. A bargain and a bonus.
