Malthouse: Yarran not locked in up forward
“We are trying to get a balance with the group that allows us the opportunity to defend and to attack and that means that Chris Yarran will play both ends of the ground.”

“I would like to think that at some stage, he is going to be able to go through the middle, and certainly through the wing.”

Yarran over a fit of the blues
Yarran wants to remain a Blue. Soon to turn 23, the boy from Swan Districts still has a long career ahead, but he has already begun to think about life post-football.

''I would obviously like to move back to WA and maybe just go up north and help out the indigenous communities up at the top end,'' he said. ''I feel I could give a lot back to the community. Obviously, I've come from a family that didn't have much in life, but if I can help to give something back to the game - that's something I want to do after footy.''

Getting a bit ahead of himself there. If he wants to give back to the community, being a role model would be a good start.

Yarran is coasting on talent. That's not the role model these kids need, they won't all be gifted with his natural ability. Read the article again, the penny hasn't even dropped.

i have and he played better in the second half of the season once he got it in his head that he acted like an idiot over the sub issue. He needs to be put on a wing and let loose.

still plenty of time for him to flourish, he still kicked 26 goals this season, i reckon he will kick 30+ next season and play more on a wing next season.

The thing that stood out most in the games after his 'hissy fit' was his defensive efforts. In games where he wasn't seeing much of the ball he was having an impact with his tackling & defensive pressure, something which had been absent from his game prior to the 'hissy fit'.

Personally I think Yarran matured more in the last half of this season than he had in his previous 4 seasons at the club. Credit to Malthouse for standing his ground & credit to Yaz for accepting what was put to him by Malthouse. Yaz of 2 or 3 years ago would have packed his bags & gone home, this in itself is a demonstration of the penny having dropped.

Fair post, but he still has far to go. When I say the penny hasn't dropped, I still just don't think he gets it overall, which several comments in that article indicate to me.

For instance, he still alludes to the sub role as undesirable/unimportant. Needs to have a chat to Duigan about the importance of positions outside the starting 21.

As some clubs have demonstrated in the last 2 seasons, the sub position is best utilised for fringe players who perhaps aren't capable of giving you 4 quarters of quality football, but in short bursts can have a quick impact (Savage at Hawthorn is a good example). Although ultimately any player should be prepared to be sub as part of team structure/balance, it's not a position that should be allocated to your most talented players unless your depth of talent is significant, which ours certainly isn't, or one of your better players is returning from a long injury layoff.

I don't think there were too many football followers, inside or outside our club, who could see any logical reason for making Yarran sub. Of course his reaction at the time was unforgiveable, but I would think most talented players would see the sub's vest as a bad thing however such feelings should be expressed behind closed doors, not for all the football world to see.

I'm pretty sure if you ask every single AFL listed player of their thoughts regarding starting as the substitute, 99.9% of them would say it's undesirable. No player wants to start as substitute. Every player I've ever heard interviewed on the topic has stated they don't like starting the game with the green vest.

Not sure why you're trying to stick the boots into Yarran for calling it as it is.

Also not sure how you've managed to misconstrue "but if that suits the team, I guess you just have to put up with it" to mean he believes the sub role to be "unimportant". That's one hell of an enormous stretch.

Yeah look my comments were purposely brief as the avoid a debate that's been done to death with differing opinions. It's great if Yarran is on an upwards trend, and I really hope he is, but many comments in that article strike me as simply highlighting how far off the mark he is.

Good defensive acts this morning in the international rules game. Played mostly on the last line of defence too. Some good goal saving tackles. My brother and I both said it looked like Yaz and Mick might have clicked.

How the Blues will rise
"There is a public viewpoint that looks at Chris Yarran as if he is 26-27, when he's still just 22. He has the ability to break games apart and that's what I love about him. So we will play him very much at both ends of the ground," Malthouse said.
