Wednesday’s training session welcomed back a few notable Collingwood players including Travis Cloke, Dale Thomas and Martin Clarke.
Cloke has successfully returned from superficial facial injuries he sustained on New Year’s Eve and looked healthy as he completed the full session.
There was a definite buzz around Gosch’s Paddock with over 200 supporters looking on in the first open session of 2009.
Even in early January, clubs are sizing themselves up against the competition with Melbourne assistant coach, Scott West, in attendance.
Players were invigorated by the onlookers and completed the first half of the session with enthusiasm.
The team commenced training with a diagonal kicking drill they have been working on for the last two months.
The players split in two and worked the ball around the centre of the group by foot, running and marking off diagonal leads.
Luke Rounds was a highlight during this drill, capitalising on his superior ball usage he developed at the Geelong Falcons.
After 15 minutes the team congregated to the Yarra end to work on a handballing drill. The goal of the drill was to work the ball, five on five, across 25 meters of ground to the other side. Brad Dick was a live-wire offensively, pushing off the ground with force to break through packs and move the ball down the ground.
The final training drill comprised of the entire group working on the ‘launch-pad’ drill. The drill is designed to move the ball with speed from the front-half of the defensive 50 metre arc to the area called the ‘launch-pad’ (located between the centre-square and the offensive 50 metre arc). The goal is for the players to move the ball quickly by hand or foot, to the ‘launch-pad’ where the ball is then launched into the attacking 50.
The initial attempts were rough with the defensive side having the upper-hand.
It wasn’t until Dale Thomas sprinted 30 meters to break the lines and launch the ball to John Anthony did the offensive side move the ball into their forward 50. The attempted mark was taken by Nathan Brown who was playing against Anthony.
Jaryd Blair was impressive on offense, moving the ball through tight spaces and delivering it to his teammates on the wing. In one particular play, the 172 centimetre Blair sidestepped a closing Thomas and speared a 35 metre pass to Sharrod Wellingham who was open on the wing.
Wellingham then assisted Alan Didak in what was to be the final goal of the session.
