Over the years we have been suffering from our inaccuracy on goal. Most specifically from set shots. While last weekend our shots on goal were mainly from bad positions and from field play I think we can all agree that a specialist goal kicking coach would be a fantastic addition to coach staff. My recommendation is Matthew Lloyd. Matthew Lloyd would be able to assist Cloke, Dawes, JA and others with their set shot routines and correct their techniques best.

My second recommendation would be to attain another additional ruck coach. Over the offseason we have traded for Darren Jolly who clearly is not anywhere near as productive as he was in Sydney. Then Wood and Fraser both have performed well below expectation this season. Having all 3 ruckman perform well below expectation is just not right and something certainly could be done to help them both in the ruck and around the ground because there should be great competition for the 2 ruck spots and I'm just not seeing it right now. For this position I would be looking for someone who has a strong understanding of movement patterns and also rucking technique. While the perfect candidate for this position is somewhat unclear there have been many ruckman who have retired over the past 10 years who could possibly fill this post.

Set shot kicking has certainly been down this year, but tellingly in the games in which we've been beaten, we simply haven't had very many set shots. Our marks inside 50m would be way down against St. Kilda, Geelong, Melbourne and Brisbane. The ones we have had would be usually in the 40-50m range, and on a significant angle in the majority of cases.

While trying to gain a 5-10% improvement in our set shot kicking should not be sneezed at, I would simply like us to make it a priority to get some games into players with footskills. We've got a run of 7 games at the MCG later in the year, we should debut Rounds and Blight at some stage to accelerate their development. It's an investment that should pay off many times over in time to come.

I totally agree with this. It's a very very important aspect of the game for a team which is zoning and at times this year out field kicking has been pretty ordinary. Rounds and Blight are two guys i'd really like to see introduced into the team for this reason.

I think our other big issue is that we are falling down at FF. I'm not a fan of this bandage solution three tall forward line we have been persisting with and think it needs to be ditched in favour of a traditional FF/CHF combo. I think the best solutions that we have on the list are Dawes and Anthony. Both of these players we can't expect to stand up in a key forward position until we have given them enough experience - around the 100 games mark.

Right now I think we need to play Dawes and persist with him because Anthony appears unfit and out of form. Dawes lets Cloke play deeper for greater periods of the game and we look better structurally for it. Anthony i'd tell to work his arse off on his fitness base until he can play both FF and CHF. Irrespective these two guys are our future in that position and right now I feel we are holding them back.

To the OP I agree. Bryan Taylor has made the comment that we do not spend enough time on goal kicking. It's such a critical skill, and we are largely so ordinary at it, that i'd overrule the fitness staff and deal with any collateral damage that comes with. We need to focus on it more. Lloyd is a good solution.

I think it's also fair to question Flanagan in our ruck coaching role. This is hard to do without any inside knowledge of his performance in the role but from an outsiders POV his record with our ruckman isn't that flash.

I'm also hoping we are all over Burns and Sanderson as deputies to Buckley when the time comes.

No use getting a specialist kicking coach unless the fitness staff are given less power over the training time each player can do.

Llyod said himself, he basically had to tell the fitness staff at Essendon to "**** off" just to get extra kicking practice in, and it's widely known that Bryan Taylor left his job as part time forward coach with us over the same argument.

I really don't think we need a specialist, we just need more time in the art of kicking. A man like Nathan Buckley could easily teach any forward an individual technique and approach to goal kicking, if given the time to do so.

Bucks is the forward coach, and we have Anthony Rocca there too, who was an accurate kick if his head didn't get in the way. We just need to give our players more time after training.

The only player I consistently "do a Llyod" and basically ignore the fitness staff at the end of training at the moment is Jack Anthony, so we need to improve in this area no doubt.

But yes, I agree on the second point, we either need an additional ruck coach or a new one all together.

Tha players should just go to a local park and practice their set shot their. I know Brian Taylor took a Carlton forward, i cant remember his name but he took him to park and just fixed his kicking. I think players like Cloke and Macaffer should just ask Bucks to go to a Vic Park for example and have a few kicks at goal. I think that will help but also not going through the corridor is gonna make it tougher for us to score more goals.

Hang on a second!! All this makes sense?? WTF? Did I logon to some evil parallel universe Bigfooty forum or something? :p

Can't argue with the OP at all. :thumbsu: ... plus getting Lloyd in would be down right funny pizzing the Bombers off. :D

Took the words outta my mouth. I was gonna say the same thing. :thumbsu:

It's really just bullsh*t how some players have such bad disposal by foot. I mean, what did these guys do before they came to AFL? Surely they practiced kick to kick with a friend outside training. Although the fitness staff are limiting players to train outside training (which I think is absolute bullsh*t), players should not forget how to kick so easily.

It really astounds me the horrible disposal players can show in the AFL

He is an excellent kicking technician and just from reviewing a Collingwood game earlier in the season he hit the nail on the head when reviewing in his commentry the set shot technique of our forwards. From Dawes' routine where he goes back spins the ball then because of it drops the ball inconsistantly onto the boot because of it.

Buckley is fine as the forward coach, and that will change again next year with assistance rotating. Rocca I like as a specialist KPF coach but I like Lloyd as a specific goalkicking coach.

Just a personal view.

Obviously as others are mentioning more time could no doubt be spent, but I also value quality of time spent. Lloyd brings quality and will encourage greater quantity also because of his strong beliefs on goal kicking. So I think he could certainly bring a marginal improvement to the team.

The fact that he is from Essendon I guess is just a bonus ;)

The recent trend has been over recent years towards a significant increase in tackling pressure. From around 2012 I think we can start to expect skills to improve drastically.

go for the best assistants simple as that.throw money at them,we should demand the best

anyone of these would be a good start

1.Silvangi/Leigh tudor
2.Leon Cameron
3.Brenton Sanderson

Part time:ruck coach Paul Salmon
Kicking:i like the idea of Lloyd as well

Bucks was an ordinary set shot on goal......he was just over 50% over his career, poor return for such a sublime field kick.

B.Holland, Lockyer or Didak are our most reliable shots at goal in recent times.

You are spot on :thumbsu: I reckon 90% of all supporters would find it the most irritating aspect of the game.

My theory is that it relates to the increase in the speed of the game and the push for athletes as opposed to pure football skills. We have recruiting clowns looking to drag body shapes rather than guys that can actually get it and dispose of it.

Fortunately this appears to be turning a bit back towards the footballer.

Under pressure you will do whatever comes naturally to you. The trick is to be constantly practising at high intensity so that you can execute the skills when the real thing comes. Goal kicking is reallly about having a set routine and following it religously. Not enough time it would appear is put into these areas.
