What are some of the cliches in footy that often have double meanings? I've done a few. Maybe even some that coaches may use.

'He brings the ball to the ground' = Can't mark to save himself

'He's an endurance machine' = Slow as F#$k

'He's the spiritual leader of this footy club' = He's a w***er off the field which is why he isn't the real captain.

'He's a real a ball magnet' = He torches the ball by foot.

'He's got elite foot skills' = Soft, outside receiver.

'Applies great inside 50m pressure' = Can't find the ball.

'He knows where the goals are' = He's selfish.

'Beautiful left foot kick' = Has no right.

These cliches CAN apply to the scenarios you’re bringing up but they also often don’t.

from our club Hawkins ‘brings the ball to ground’ - he also happens to be among the best marks in the forward 50 of the last 20 years

Mitch Duncan has ‘elite foot skills.’ I don’t think anyone would say he’s soft and just plays outside.

blokes like Mooney and Ling and Selwood have been described as spiritual leaders when they weren’t captains. While ling’s commentary and Selwood’s onfield approach are certainly not everyone’s cup of tea, I’ve not heard a bad word said about them away from footy.

blicavs is an endurance machine. He’s neither breathtakingly fast, or slow as f***. He’s just normal paced for his size.

Every other club would have equivalents as well

For years Hawkins has 'brought the ball to ground' with 2 or 3 defenders against him. Charlie Dixon does it all the time. Jack Darling only 'brings the ball to ground' when in space and under no pressure. Not the same.

Forwards creating a contest and either earning a stoppage or eating up enough time for numbers to arrive is important. If every time the ball went inside 50 to Hawkins either 1 on 1 but not to his advantage or 2 or 3 on 1 and was marked by the opposition and immediately rebounded Geelong would stink. Not even Wayne Carey marked every ball kicked near him inside 50.

The only one of the OP's suggestions that is 'code' is the spiritual leader one.

He’s training the house down - 6-8 weeks away may be lucky to ever play again

He copped a bit of a knock we’re hoping he’ll be right for next week - potential leg amputation

He’s a clever player - slow as shit

Green shoots - our kids are shit

He’s got a bit of cult figure about him - he’s got a shit haircut
