I've never liked Queens Birthday, not since the CIA sponsored coup in 1975.
It is not an event in my mind. The Big Freeze is a great charity fundraiser. Essendon is a better fit. The rivalry between Collingwood and Melbourne was dead in 1970.
Just seems a nothing game to me. I'd prefer to play St Kilda on the Saturday..at the G. let Melbourne do whatever they like - we're not that important to them, they're not that important to us.
That said - yesterday was a good contest between two evenly matched teams. Critical turnovers cost us. Melbourne deserved to win, but only just.

We won't be getting rid of it until Ed is no longer Prez. MM said we should dump it but Ed said no way. One of Ed's downfalls is he wants us to play in blockbusters every week. I'd just like our team to go a bit low-profile and play finals.

gough passes on his regards......as far as the QB goes, we might need the funding in coming years when eddie leaves and all the billionaires go back to carlton..

When the ball bounces off the ground and into someones arms, it's normally not paid a mark so I'm unsure what game you were watching.

Watch it again.

What an absolute cop out for an important free that was as clear as day.

1 bad decision by the umpire.... 1!
We copped missed decisions the entire game at equally important moments.

At what point does some of the blame come back to a team who let slip a 28 point lead and who at half time, were killing it in the midfield against a team without a recognised ruckman?
Absolute garbage to suggest the umpires were the difference.

Sure. We let go of a very good lead and this had a lot to do with Melbourne's increased pressure in the middle.
However, there is no doubt in my mind that certain free kicks, leading to certain goals were huge momentum killers for us and at the end of the game, when we were pressing, the umpires absolutely killed us.

Can you please comment on the Hunt free kick and advantage? That was actually laughable and the exact moment that I knew those umpires didn't want Collingwood to win that game.

My thoughts are that you should watch the replay again. Clear mark and then copped a knee in the back for his troubles. Was a clear 50. Wasn't paid yet the tackle on Petracca was. Exhibit A.

Sorry wicksy, in a game where we definitely the worst of it that one was an umpiring error that went our way - from the umpire's angle it looked like a mark but he definitely spilled it.

I've seen in the past where you can click on the vote totals and it displays a list of people who have voted?

I believe it's one of those settings that can't be changed once the poll has been started.

Otherwise, people who voted thinking their vote was anonymous, later find out it has become un-anonymous.

There's a lot of complaining about this game, but I haven't seen too many folks offering a better alternative.

It's an away game ....

... how many folks would rather we play it as an interstate game at instead? Adelaide Oval? Perth Oval? SCG? Spotless? Metricon? Gabba? Manuka? Surely none of those would be more popular than playing in Victoria?

... or what about one of those crazy place games like Shanghai? Or York Park? Or Wellington? Would have thought most folks would consider that beneath Collingwood?

... or against Geelong at Kardinia Park? Wouldn't fit us in.

... or against one of the Etihad tenants? Can't see that being popular at all!

So when it comes down to it, playing an away game at the MCG is by far the least worst option. And if we're playing an away game there, surely Melbourne is no worse than any other team?

The Queens Birthday fixture is fine, just end the BS Melbourne home game every time. If they can't stand up on their own by now then get out of the comp.

But that takes us back to where we started. If we share Queens Birthday, so every other year it becomes our home game, then where do we play that extra away game? ...

... how many folks would rather we play it as an interstate game at instead? Adelaide Oval? Perth Oval? SCG? Spotless? Metricon? Gabba? Manuka? Surely none of those would be more popular than playing in Victoria? Etc, etc, etc

Playing Melbourne away at the MCG on Queen's Birthday might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's one of the least worst options.

The least worst option?

How about against Melbourne not on QB?

Why would that be any more palatable?

Does QB imply that there is some kind of subliminal republicans (Collingwood of course) versus monarchists (Melbourne of course) thing going on?

But you're missing the point. It's not about the opponent or the location. It's the fact that the game has become a "Grand Final" for our opposition. Add the Neil Daniher factor to it and you have a game whereby the romance factor is heavily in Melbourne's favour. You just have to see the build up, listen to the commentary, watch the umpires get involved.... Our boys on the flip side, clearly couldn't give a sh*t about it. They're used to having 60-70k at the G.

Now on top of this, they always get the gate?

Turn it up Melbourne!

Yes... It's very much Collingwood vs the rest of the country. Even more so than normal.

This year the Brownlow goes to the least worst player in the league!

If folks started arguing that Danger / Sloane / etc / etc are terrible footy players (in the way that some folks are arguing that QB is a terrible fixture), then yeah, I'd make a point about them being 'least worst'.

Not happy that people keep bringing up the Daniher factor.
The only Daniher factor in AFL football today is Joe, not Neale.
And to infere that a dying man has an influence on the result is just bizarre.

Get all high and mighty about something. It certainly wouldn't be out of character.

Why don't we play Melbourne for the Darren Millane cup each year and have a charity event to support victims of road trauma? You can bet your bottom dollar that game will mean more to us than it would Melbourne. Sad? Yes. True? Yes.

I'm in no way trying to disrespect Neil and his cause. I sincerely hope that a cure is found and that he (and the game) is a reason for that. My point is whether we need to be the oppoaition every year.

Oh and before you get even more high and more mighty.... I donated a substantial amount of money on the wknd to MND. Did you?

Not disputing that the arrangement is pro-Melbourne, but let's forget about that because we're not interested in Melbourne, we're interested in Collingwood ...

... can you suggest an alternate arrangement that could possibly be more pro-Collingwood?

Try this exercise - go over to the Adelaide board and ask them if they'd be interested in an annual fixture where they played Brisbane on Queens Birthday every year at the Adelaide Oval. It would be a Brisbane home game and therefore Brisbane would get the gate, Brisbane would get the home change rooms, Brisbane would get the black shorts.

They'd want to know the catch? They'd think it's Christmas, wouldn't they?

Why does it have to a fixed game? Why can't it just be like any other round?

My word.
For someone accusing me of being "high and mighty", and let's face it, I've no issue with that tag.
When you're opinion is always right you may as well express it.....
But to tag me then go on to state you "donated a substantial amount of money to MND", without being able to substantiate it, well who's high and mighty now?
If you must know I just dropped a mill to a charity of my choice...not MND.
Prove me wrong!

Why does it have to a fixed game? Why can't it just be like any other round?

It could be like any other round ...

... so let's roll the dice on:

Eagles in Perth
Freo in Perth
Crows at AO
Port at AO
Brisbane at the GABBA
Suns at Metricon
GWS at Spotless
(Swans at SCG is not an option because we already do that every year)
North at Etihad
St Kilda at Etihad
Western Bulldogs at Etihad
Geelong at MCG
Hawks at MCG
Essendon at MCG
Richmond at MCG
Carlton at MCG

... the vast majority of those options are worse than an away game against Melbourne at the MCG???
