Our defensive structure was okay but apart from Glass and Hurn, the rest weren't up to scratch.

Spangher was okay, Wirra was outplayed and Mitch Brown needs to be played forward.

The two big issues with defence were that their midfield were quicker than ours and most of the time we didn't man up through the middle, so they had an easy run.

In truth, Melbourne should have won by more.

Re: Insipid!!!

What an utterly insipid and heartless display from West Coast today. Some questions I'm sure many fans want answered:

Where the F*CK is our run? Are we able to chase the ball or move to a contest?

Why can't we MAN UP FFS? Surely Woosh asked the boys to fuggen MAN UP at some point during the game?

WHY WHY WHY do we BOMB the ball into the forward line? Can we not take the pill and kick it onto a team mate's chest? Is it THAT hard?

The Handball. Jesus H Christ. Why do we continue to use the same old game plan in regard to the bloody handball? To make it even worse, we tend to handball to team mates who are under intense pressure or other team mates who are standing still. Get rid of the fugging HANDBALL!

And where was the heart and determination? For crying out loud. We've got some dead wood in our team when it comes to heart. You'd think that Fletch, given that this would be one of his last chances to play AFL, would have come out with a bit more in the tank.

And Woosh is talkin about making the eight in the next year or so.

A pathetic display today boys.

That is a pretty spot on analogy. Too many players ignore the first natural option and try and dodge one, two or three players. It is painful to watch.

Re: WTF was that SH!TE???!?!

I thought it was weird that Nic Nat consistantly didn't get a free whenever #37 from the Demons shepherded him out of ruck contests.

That is a fair comment. He was blatantly shephered out of many ruck contests in the forward line.

Melbourne are a speedy team and we are at the other end of the spectrum. They were always going to have that confidence and it showed. Watching the game, there isn't much more we could've done with the cattle. The players looked pretty committed but lacked any edge.

In a way, it looks good for the PP. Cannot see us beating Freo nor Nth Melbourne. Somehow we just have to hope Freo can fluke another win beside the derby to get above us and not steal our first pick?

That's the thing I dont get.

Okay, I understand we are zoning up off kick ins. That's the new trend, great. But once the ball's in play, what then?

Are we simply staying in this rolling zone? ie: players guarding space. It would seem common sense that you have to man-up at this point, or play a man up zone.

And you're right, Melbourne were clearly the better team today and should've won by more.

Is it just me or do we seem to have no real strategy at Centre bounces?

A lot of teams are very systematic with the way they handball backwards to set up after a bounce, but we seem to often just hack it on the boot forward

I'm disappointed but not surprised really. I thought we'd struggle to get up for this one.

They outlplayed us in the ruck today... Lynch and Naita were woeful at exherting some physicality in the ruck AND we were waaaaaay to slow to adapt to their ruck strategy (hold out our key ruck and have Jamar going at it pretty much uncontested). Wasn't till late in the third quarter did we have a 'third' man up at the contest while Naita/Lynch were being held.

Two thing that really did shit me though was the number of uncontested possessions they got in our back half. Were were like a rabble as soon as they got the ball forward of centre and our shitty handballing! We either handballed to stationary players/players under pressure, or consistently missed targets by hand when not under pressure. F*** me! Its not that hard to hit a team mate by hand 10 metres away is it???

The packs were huge at the ground today so it was a bit hard to see what was going on at times but some things I noticed were,

  • Mitch Brown looked like he was going to tear the game apart very early in quater one, was getitng a lot of mid-field and forward ball. Didn't look anywhere near as good when moved back. Was this just to cover the loss of Brett Jones, who I notice ended up being named at CHB?
  • Melbourne seemed to mainly be working the ball forward through Wirra and Spangher's opponents. Spangher was better in the second half but I think he needs to be used on a wing or something where he's not involved in so many one on one contests.
  • Like a few other posters have mentioned, what was Nick Nat being sheparded out of ruck contests and melbourne using a 3rd man up, if this is legal why weren't we doing something to combat it?
  • I was super impressed with Rosa's attack on the football. His disposal was okay, but I though he'd been knocked out after going obsencly hard at a loose ball and being collected. Think he'll be a player.
  • McKinley's work rate was actually pretty good, but he didn't make the most of his oppurtunities. Needs to find the balance between chasing hard, working hard and still being able to consistently slot goals.
  • I thought Kennedy got that balance exactly right. Gun.
  • Ebert looks like he's got a little bit of forward prowess in him, would it be possible to get a little of rotation between him and LeCras going? I really think the team would benefit from LeCras getting some more midfield stats. Really need to work on our kicks inside 50.
  • On that note, while he was brilliant bringing the ball out of defence, would it be a good idea to bring hurn futher up the ground? Seems the perfect guy to be bringing the ball inside 50.
  • We seemed to be pressing up too high when we had the ball, leaving Melbourne players free on the counter attack. This is the problem with getting behind early, will feel like we need all out attack.
  • Priddis is still our only elite ball winner. His handballs are getting better at finding a player in space but the problem is I think he's probably the bets we have at finding space. Surely he can get some intense sessions with the skills coach? I think it's very important that we work on his foot skills because he is still above and beyond all the young kids in ability to find the ball.
  • I think Masten will be next to reach that level, hopefully with better skills.
  • Thought it was strange that we changed we tagged Cale Morton after it seemed to work pretty well to just let him rack up stats last time. Particularly because I had a bit of money on him to rack up the stats :P

I would like to Vent my anger toward C Fletcher- useless
I think from now on he should stay put in the WAFL no matter how his form is.Time to retire.

And I really hope that at the end of season we cut all those useless older players that have given us nothing this year.
Ash Hansen,Brent Staker, Adam Hunter, Mark Seaby,C Fletcher,
T Stenglein,
Why do we need these useless players wasting space on our list- How can we move forward if they are kept.
D Wirra will retire.
I think its time for a total clean out.
Can anyone add more to the list, Does anyone disagree

yeh i was wandering about that one too!!

isn't that supposed to be a free kick?

Complete cop out. We should of smashed them.

Just another game we should of won but didn't just like Fremantle, Collingwood and Richmond

I dont think it is a cop out, we were never going to win. I tipped Melbourne and was not even tempted to go the other way.

If Melbourne didn't win this game for Stynes, they may as well have shut the doors at that club. The real question should be, if the Dees can play like that one week, why aren't they putting in the same effort every week?

We were slaughtered out of the ruck/ centre all day. I am amazed the score line wasn't worse for us. The selectors pushed their luck not picking Seaby for a second week in a row. Lynch tries his heart out, but at the end of the day he is a part time ruckman and Naitanui was playing his third game. (Good question about the shepperds out of the ruck contests too, I was asking the same thing about where the free kicks were for that?)

we were never gonna win this one today
everthing was against us

Why is it shit teams will do anything to get a edge on us. Sack the coach, pretend the pres has cancer, is there nothing the opposition won't do to motivate their players when playing us?
Seriously though, there are no excuses for losing to that rabble. Absolutely piss poor effort.

Shit, shit, shit kicking today.

Mastne played crap, handballing to the opposition many times. In the l;ast quarter he ahndballed strait to the dees player, no WCe player around him. Goalkicking was bad, fieldkicking was worse.

NicNat looked lost for the whole game. Dissapointed with Brown being moved back:mad:. We have no one to blame but ourselvers. the supporters and media make up things about the plane trips discourage recovery etc. but the fact is we suck away. Very, very pissed off about today. We were very nearly blown out of the water against them. Dissapointing.:thumbsd:

If i see one more eagles player receive the ball;turn and handball without looking ill f#*cking scream. Is Mitchell Brown the only bloke prepared to take the ball and actually run towards our goals??? As much as im generally the first to bag Fletcher i think hes a victim of our bizzare game plan which involves nobody willing to take the game on.Get the ball and offload it a.s.a.p preferably backwards and preferably to somebody marked or standing still.Fletcher has a good sidestep and kicks left and right but as soon as he gets to afl he gets our silly handball disease. Is it a team gameplan or dont our players have the talent/confidence to take the game on?????

If you saw melbourne literally worshipping Stynes jumper before the game, they were having an epiphany, and still thought we would win, well then you don't understand a lot about human behaviour and emotions. It was a lay down misere, before the ball was bounced!

But, carry on.

The 'ol soggy jumper trick. So that's what undid us.
I have to say, I found that whole jumper business a bit bizarre. Stynes has been canonised and had his relics displayed like the Turin shroud at the MCG Cathedral - and he's not dead. If I was Jim I would be wondering why they think I am a gonner.
What yesterday did show was that the mental attitude of players is as important as physical attributes. It also helped that God was obviously guiding some of those kicks of their's.

I'm a big fan of Stynes as an AFL identitiy and human being. The way melbourne played for him was apt. The jumper bit maybe a bit over the top but I guess they really needed to drive that little bit of inspiration home. Good luck to the Dees. Hope they go on with it and win another 3 games for Jimmy.
